For some time 11011r, l have been on a
medical program of walking at a fut
!lace every day for an hour, as urgently
prescribed by my doe tor. A routine
electrocardiogram had binted at a beart
problem, and a treadmiU exercise IIi tbe
doctor's office revealed that not enoiJib
blood was reaching the heart ·at extreme
exersion. The daily walk was ordered
as the corrective measure for· restoring
an adequate now of blood --starting
with a brisk 15 minute effort and
gradually extesdlng the time to a full
60 minutes.
At the beginning, I grudgingly allotted
the required time from an already busy
routine --one hour out of s ome 16 or
17 waking hours each day for the rest
of my life. But the comforting s6lution
came quickly. I discovered two back-
to -back Bible study half hours on radio,
conveniently scheduled to fit In with my
business routine. The first is at 11 a.m.
on week-days, during which I alternate
between Dr. Carl Mcintire on XEMO
and the Biola College hour on KGER,
with particular attention to Dr. Lloyd
T . Anderson's Bible class on Tuesdays
and Thursdays. The second half hour
offers Dr. J _ Vernon McGee's 0 Througtl
the Bible" br oadcast on XEMO at 11:30
a.m. (and again at high noon on KGER
if I get a late start for my walk ).
So there was the blessing, in double
m easure : a steady improvement in all-
around physical fitness and in heart
con)iition (as shown by a repeat tread-
mill test ) and also rewarding study
courses in the fundamental doctrines
of the Bible, from Genesis through
Revelation .
On on e of thos e walks. no t· so long
ago, I was list ening to Dr. McGee
pres.enting his customary introduction ,
which always includes the reading of
lette rs fr om listeners. l was startled
to hear the name Corona del Mar . Dr.
McGee was reading a letter from an
unname d local resident, who told :he
heart-rendin g stor:; or a little girl who
never r eac hed hom·3 one Friday alter-
noon fr om Li ncoln school in Harbor
V1ew Hills . The body of the 11 ye ar
old girl was fou~d the next day in a
r e mote area alp ng the Back Bay. In
the letter to Dr. McGee, the mother
told of her anguish and grief and of
thoughts of suicide. She was impelled
one Sunday to attend a service at Calvary
Chapel in Costa Mesa, and she heard
a sermon by Pastor Chuck Smith on
"How t o find God ." Right there she
prayed fo r the comfo rt that only our
Lord can provide .
' As she was to wri!e later. j 'God's
s on , J esus C hrist, was indeed knocking
at the doo r of my heart, and I let Him
in as Savior and Lord --and the weight
of the whole world was lifted fr om my
s houlders, and I was free."
I r ecognize d the tragic event, of
course, although no names were given.
The Ensign had carried the story of
the death of Linda O'Keefe, and of the
efforts to locate the killer. I had no
phone number for the family, but I
did have the address from the news·
paper stor y, so I wrote · a note to Mrs.
Barbara O'Keefe, telling of the coinci-
dence of hearing her letter read on the
radio program . I asked Barbara if she
woulll write her testimony of conversion
and faith so that l might pwllsh it In
the Ensign's weekly Bible page to pro·
vide comfort and reassurance for others.

Lord often uses adversity and grtef
to bring us comfort and blesalng. Bar"
bara agreed to send me a copy of the

In a sense, my story begins on a Fri-
day, July 7, 1973, wben I received a
phone call from my ll-year-olc! daugh-
ter, Linda. Sbe asked me to pick her up
from summer school. ''I'm busy, Linda."
I replied. "You'll have to walk home."
At that she started to cry and begged me
to come. Angrily, I slammed the re-
ceiver down on her sobbing voice.
How could I do such a thing? At the
time, though I was a wife and mother of
three girls, my life was one of boredom,
always searching for a new fulfillment.
The void that I felt became worse when
I tried filling it with possessions. Even·
tually, my emotions reached such a low
point that it was impossible for me to
laugh or cry.
This was my state of mind when
Limja called. And that's why, when she
didn't come home for lunch, I wasn't
worried -I was certain that s he had
gone to a friend's house to play. By 4
p.m. I began to call , but couldn't find
her. At 5 the police were notifie d and
the nightmare began - one that would
change our lives.
The search continued through the
night; endless questions &o m the police
and gallons of coffee complete d the
scene. Still, 1 was stunned. and couldn't
be lieve anyth ing was re ally wrong. 1
was sure that Linda was punishing me
by staying with a fri e nd somewhe re . A
ne wsman came bv and described me as
"stoic." Finally .. everyone left in the
middle of the night and told us to rest.
A fe w hours late r we were awakene d
b y the bright july sun. The newspaper
arrived with the headline, "Girl , II,
Vanishes in Newport." The search for
Linda w as e nded that day whe n he r
body was found in a ditch along the hack
bay. She had been strangled.
A witness had seen he r get into a van
alo ng the way ho me. I wante d so much
to find the killer that I chased vans all
ove r the place. A drawing was made of
the man·s face and. before long, it was
etched in my mind. But no killer was
ever IOund.
Later in the summer we decided as a
family to tel away and 110 camping in
Northern Callfomla. On Sunday there
was a worship service In the redwoods
and, as we sans·· Amu:ing Gnce, '' I was
overcome with udneso and started to
cry. I cried every lew houri during the
trip-every time I thought of my pn!Ci-
ous Linda -because in my heart I
knew I was responsible for the temble
tragedy that bad taken her lilio. I was
desperate and contemplated suicide.
But each time, I remembered Diana, our
10-year-old, and couldn't go through
with it.
Whe n I sought my doctor's counsel
after we returned, he simply said that
I'd have to be realistic and stop griev-
ing. That was impossible. Still in an-
guish, I continually begged God, if He
existed, to give me peace.
The folJowing Sunday we we nt to a
church called Calvary Chapel where the
ministe r gave a marvelous message enti-
tled, "How to Find God." My heart was
so full of bitterness and misery, but I
knew this had to be m y answer. God's
Son, Jesus Christ, was indeed knocking
at the door of my heart, and I let Him in
as Savior and Lord. As 1 prayed, it
seemed that the we ight of the whole
world was lifted from my shoulders and
1 was free .
Words are not e nough to e xpress m y
gratitude to Jesus for saving me from
what was sure to be my destruction. The
first year after Linda's death there were
many emotional battles -especially
whe n July 7 came with all its me mor:ies.
But by this second year, I had a wonder-
ful day of realizing how, as time has
passed, God has strengthened me and
e ven e nabled me to reach out to others.
Each day, in fact. I ask the Lord to u se
me in helping someone e lse and He
usually does.
God is working in our famil y life, too.
-Last August, my daughter, Diana, be-
came a Christian. And this last spring
we opened our home to Christian stu-

The ld.Dgdom was nm by an appointed administrative Wizard and by a royal court of
6 men and a woman. The court was called the Council (or, in moments of irreYerence,
the Momma and the Papas). It was elected by the peasaots, but, once elected, chose to

The court was, full of interesting characters. There were the Prime Mlntster IDd
