There was instant reaction from tax- burdened citizens, who rightly claimed that this was an improper use of tax fWlds . The CoWlcil vote to provide the $5,000 "participation funds" was unani- mous, but it would be enlightening to know how the citizens of Costa Mesa would vote on such a request for tax money to help finance a purely com- mercial enterprise for bringing bigger crowds into town. A conservative guess is 901 opposition. Take heed, CoWlcil. Vogue magazine is perturbed because of statements made at that Mesa CoWlcll meeting that the tax !Wlds were needed to help subsidize the promotion. Indeed, such clainis are an embarrassment to Vogue, because the journalistic tradi- tion is that editorial . space ts not for sale. But that is not the key issue. The issue is &pending tax money for promoting a commercial venture. The Costa Mesa City Council __can relieve Vogue magazine of Its embarrassment and Mesa residents of a slight tax burden by witbckawtng the offer of tu lunda and .teppirig out of the tourism promotf.c?n acheme. Millions of In- diane live in Asia -why me!'' I was brought up iD the family of a high prie.t. J(y father was a guru whooe photograph io otiQ wonbiped in thousands of homes in India and Bangladesh. That meant I was al- ready "saved," for according to the Hindu acriyturea I bad completed the cycle o births and deaths. Jl.y father was an attorney at the high court of Calcutta and the Supreme Court of India. I was trained to be his s uccessor, not only in the legal profession, but as a spiritual leader as well. Daily I read the Gita, the Upani- shad!: and Tantric philosophy at my father's feet. He had arranged for me to fly to London· to .study for the law at the famed Inner Temple, where be also had been trained. It W&.! planned .that f should become a politicaJ leader in my country, as well as a spiritUal leader under the Vedic cultures end rituals. But Jesus Christ had an altogether different plan; midway in my training he caught hold of me, and I never went aboard that plane. At the time I was' a postgraduate student of economies and law at Calcutta University, going through a period of frustration and depres- sion in my life. As general secretary of the university student.A' union, I Jed student demonstrations against government policies. We paralyzed government machinery so that the police fired bn us. A warrant was issued for my arrest. One police bul- let could have killed me, but a close associate and friend in front of me took the bullet and died instantly. Then the American evangelist, Billy GrahaM, eame to Calcutta to preach at a ·ran)". At the time I had.. -no svoct-,.,....., to •r abori Cui~ tians or Christianity. I bated Chris- tians for being hypocrites, and con- sidered their religion a Ucense for drinking, dancing and immorality. As a boy, when European missiOn- aries handed me a Bible on the streets, I tossed it in a Wayside gar- bage can before reaching home. After I grew up all British people became to me a symbol of imperial- is m. I abhorred their ugly tmage, as they seemed to come to India with a gun in one hand and a Bible in the other . As far as we Hindus were concerned, they were anything but true and sincere witnesses to "the suffer ing Christ." Furthermore, Christianity was to us the religion of the ··untouchables." I would not think of identifying myself with such people or s itting with them. Anything good in Christianity, I felt, could be found in Hinduism. When Billy Graham spoke at an outdoor meeting on the grounds of St. Paul's Cathedral in Calcutta on Febr uary 9,1956, I was in a Sh-d and melancholy mood. Only with reluc- tance had J come to hear him. I listened to the singing of the Cal- cutta Boys' School Choir and the audience a.s it sang the old hymns of the church, under the leadership of Cliff Barrows. I heard the welcom- ing remarks of the Metropolitan, the Most Reverend Abindra Nath Mu- kerji, Archbishop of India, Paki- stan, Burma and Ceylon. Then Mr. Graham came to the ros- t rum and spoke. He was at the end of a tour of India, he said, and he began to preach from John 3:16. The filter of my unreceptive mind was broken by the essence of his sermon. As I remember his message after 20 years, it was, "Jesus is the Son of God. J f you accept Jesus as your personal Savior, Jesus will in- troduce you to the Father. You will be saved from t he guilt of sin." J have never met Billy Graham since that day, but I would like to say to him, ''Thank you for intro- ducing me to Jesus Christ." I was one of a thousand who went forward that evening. It took six years from the time that I heard lllr. Graham apeak until I was finally vanqulohed by Jeouo CHrist. During that time I, a Hindu Brahmin, enrolled In Carey Baptiot Bible Co~ Calcutta. The peanut man is Walking on the bones of a dead man in order to get to where he wants to go. Well, he couldn't have picked a better one. Old Roosy started this country down the road to socialism more tha n 30 yea rs ago. I guess it's onl)' proper that the man who wants to take us to tne om er ena 01 tnat roaa sooulO ptck up the torch from the guy who flrst burned us. Our massive welfare rolls, our ba ck-breaking government pension system, and a lot of other big-government ideas began with the man from War m Springs. The man from Plains is his disciple. When all of the rhetoric and smlling and shuffling are all over with, th ere are a few haM fa cts we had better look at before we put Jimmy Goober in the White Hou se: For one thlng, the 'Democrats have earned a reputation as Ame rica's War Party. Look at the record. All back through our history, the Democrats hav~ led us into war and the Republicans have led us out. If this is the kind of thing you want, vote for Jimmy. You hear a lot of college professors and long hairs talk about how American businessmen have profiteered from war. The fa ct is, the Democratic Party ha s NEEDED wars to bail it out of the terrible economic mess it keeps getting us into. The war business Is very good political business for guys like that. No. matte'r bow good theytrytomakeit sound, when Carter, Humphrey and McGovern talk a.bollt the government putting everybody to work, it's nonsense. The government has no money, except what it takes from the people. It can meet no payroll without taking from tOOse already at work. It can create no wealth. What it CAN dots start wars. It can also make decisioos to either control the economy (thereby ruining It) or let the free enterprise system work its wonders of plenty. Jimmy Peanut might be the most rellgioos man alive. He might have the prettiest smile, the cutest kids, the nicest mother, and even the very best of intentions. But, be and · his Democrat party are not going to GIVE you anything -except trouble. They've proven lt over and over. Al Forglt BOONDOGGLE OF THE WEEK: Costa Mesa. decides to spend $5,000 In tax money to try to bring more tourists to the Orange Coonty coast.
