O'OoO C • A WARNING IN SMALL PRINT There have been nturmurings of doubt and some <?_utspoken objections as to the fitness of Jim Slemons to serve as our assemblyman in Sacramento. Tricky composition in his campaign literature, that helped him win the Re- publican nomination in the 74th Assembly District, should now alert all voters to eJCUnine the small print in any promises made by-this car salesman. I have on my desk a copy of one of Mr. Slemons' campaign mailers. A casual glance at the mailer brings forth the message that ' 'Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and Robert Badham say: Vote for Jim Slemons." I wonder how many voters read the small print, which says in a tiny voice that the "vote for Slemons" statement was actuaily attributed to the campaign chairman for Reagan, the wife of . the campaign chairman for Ford, and the campaign chairman for Badham. The campaign literature was clearly meant to mislead the voter. But that is not all. Whispered rumors about candidate Slemons have now come out in the open with the publication of an extensively researched news story by the Santa Ana Register, repilil"t.,tg that "films and picture books: purportedly pornographic, have been confiscated from Assembly candidate James Slemons by federal authorities on at least two occasions since 1974." These are factors that should be seriously considered by voters on the Nov. 2 election day. Remember, there is another choice on the ballot ·-Ron Cordova, a Democrat who is more con- servative than a lot of Republicans. • • • • • • * U.S. AID IS WEAPoN FOR TYRANTS This is the month when praises are solicited for the United Nations and cash for UNICEF, the U. N. Children's Fund. It is getting harder each year to generate enthusiasm about the U. N ., because it is dominated more and more by communist and socialist nations, most of them recipients of foreign aid give-away from Uncle Sam, and most of them bitter critics and enemies of the U. S. To continue giving aid and sustenance t o these enemies of freedom is to perpetuate the evil of totalitarian rule, which keeps millions in hunger and bondage, unable to feed themselves, be· cause they do not have the Impetus of private enterprise and Individual in- itiative. It might seem heartless to talk in similar vein about UNICEF .Immediately comes tbe shocked retort: "You aren't against bel ping the hwigry children of the world, are you!" No, I am not, and that is wby I oppose both the U. N. and UNICEF. Both help to perpetuate tbe agony of captive nations. DO you naively Imagine that UNICEF belp goes dir~tly to the suffering cbild- ren In other landS? Of course not. This inspired writina' tets I orth the pr«mineas:e of Christ'• high-priesthood and His perfect sacrifice. H~ the attention of the reader is direcced to the appropriate remarks of a modem Biblical scholar : ''Prieahood and i:tc:rifice an: i:rueparate entities. The Aaro nic priests offutd up sacrifices repeatedly, and our author pays partic- ular attention to thco annual sin-of- fering pre~ on the nation's behal f hy the high prit9t on the Day of A.aronic priests offered up sacrifices could not meet the real need of men and women. A sin-stained conscieru:e is a barrier to communion with God. and the cleansing oi the ronscimcc could not ~ affected by such sacrifict"s as the Levitical cultus provided. But Otrist exercises His priestly ministry on the. basis of a real and efficacious sacrifice -'the sacrifice of hi mself' ( He b. 9 :26). The nature of this sacrifice our author finds expressed in the language of Psalm 40:6-8, \\'here SOtt~e who knows the u!Jeless- ness of animal sacrifices dedicates his liie to God for the obedient acoorn · plishmmt of His 'dll. This language is recognized as the language o f Otrist 'wh("'t he oometh into the world' ( Heb. 10:5). In the body which God pre- po.rtrl ior H im He [01rist] fulfilled the ,,;u oi God. and at the end it was 1hat consecrat-ed body, that obedient liie, that He offered up to God in llrreath. Such a s.a.crificc: must neces- sarily be acceptable to God, but it is not only acceptable to God in itself ; it effectually cleanses in heart and con- ~l·ience those \\1to embrace Grist as their high priest with God. The Servant is in- troduced as a priest, deltined to spri'*.le many nations' (Isa.. SZ:IS), and He is equally a sacrifice, yielding HimseU up as 'an offering for sin' (I sa. SJ :10). His portrayal was ful- lilled in h1~ when 'the Son of rna., also came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a r.lllSOm for many' (Mark 10:45). ln this spirit Jesus a.ccepted death., and the redemptive and cleansing efficacy of His death <in the lives of His fol- lowtts has been a matter of plain ex- perience ior over nineteen ccnturiu . By DwiGHT L. ~·fooDl' "He that loveth not. knoweth not God: for God is Jove." In John's Srst epistle, eighth to twent~·-first verses you find this sentence recorded three times -"God is love.·· I be lieve there are no three words in the Bihle that Satan is more anxious to blot out than that one se ntence. I don't thi nk that he has been so successful in an~'thin g in the last six thousand years as in !Tlaking the world helieve that Cod is not a Cod of love. I earnestly believe that this old world has swung out in the cold and dark and will never swing hack until this truth dawns upon it, that God is love. Mr. Spurgeon one day took a train from London down into the countrv to spend a little time with a friend. and he found this frierld had a weather vane on his bam, and on this weather vane were the words ''God is love." "\\t"hat do you mean by that? Do you mean that God is as cha ngeable as the wind?" . "No, I believe that God is love wh ichever way the wind blows." Now it is pretty hard to make saint or sinner helieve that. When things are running smoothl y we believe that God is love, but when things go wrong we think Cod does not Jove us, and when things are unfortunate and seem to he against us, then it is that we think that Christ has forgotten us and does not love us. Three times John savs in these few verses, "God is love.'' Not that, "He may love;" but "is Love." You ask me why He loves. I don't know. I cannot tell you . If you should ask me why the sun shines I could not tell you . I suppose it shines because it cannot help it. because it is its nature . And I sup- pose that is the rea~on that God loves, because it is H is nature. You take a man or a woman and make them believe that there is no one in the wide world that loves or cares for them, and they wou ld rather die than live .. They are the ones who commit suicide. You wives know that if you haven't the love of your bus- bou>ds you cannot do anything to please them, and life be- comes weary a nd burdensome to you if there is really no love. Tbe thing we prize above everything else in the world is love, and that is the th.ing that Cod prizes above every- thing else. He wants our hearts and aHections. 1-when He came into this world, taught that the FaiW wu low and all His teaching• went on to show that , lh.tl Lod ln1~·, lilt ' JH'I'"''·dh ,uu l I 111 111n l /li m (It'"'" Cin j,l) tHin nl ~ ldt·" ( :o\ \\'dii,U lh, ,t lo 11 1111'1 I ,11 ho • I •II '·" h .1,11'1 .til• I I ul · Ullllll"'l for .1 l'htK'II" 1l.uh tlt'll'l'·']'\'l. ,,nd. ""Good MllstM. ·• the ruler had ia•d, '"what shalt I do to mherit eternal l1fe?" The lord answered in effect: "Why do you call me good? There is none good but God, so if I am good I must be God. Our Lord. of course , wots try· ing to show the yourig man that it was impos.s•ble to earn salva· tion by doing good. To keep: the law was impo~sible for any child of Adam. and brNking the law could only bring condemnation. Now this absolute iustice is the basis for the be liever's con· fidence in God. It is wonderful to know that God does not merely pity sinners and smuggle them into he.ven if they are sOf'ry . First of all, I am 1bsJiutely amazed at the numb er of pe.Jple who wanted the First Dist r ict Council )ob --as long as i t was ··free" and they didn't have to parade themselves in front of the voters. A lot of these folks wen~ praised for being so civic minded, and I see in the paper s where Councilman Don Mcinnis urged them to stay interested iu serving their city. We ll-, a year fro m next April, we'll find out how many are interE"sted enou gh to run a citywide ca m)aign to try lo get the job. You know, that citywide campaign just might bE" the trouble. U we E-lected council- men strictly by district s, instead of voting citywide on every one of them, we might find more people interested in running. After all, it costs a bundle nowadays to present yourself to everyiXJd)' in a cit y of mo re than 60,000 people. The political professionals have made the dir ect-m HI campaign the big thing. Do you know how mucl1 it costs, witll today's pos tagE> rates, to send out just one dtywide mailing':' If ~ampaigning could be restricted to the candidate's home rHstrict, whe re hE> or she is already pretty well known, anywa y, it would ma ke mo rE> sense and the cost woul d be more reasonable. Rfght away, somebody's going to say '·but, the Council governs the whole city.'' So, the Congress governs the whol e country, the legislature the whole state and the boar d or supervisors the whole county. And how a re thosE> people el ected':' By the voters fn their own districts , that's how. Besides, Newport is known as a city of independent communities, with different problems. It makes more sense to have those communities f>lect their own spokes - men. Wh ether or not we got to a dis trict election system, I think it's timE> we did some redistricting. Lido Isle is in the same district with Central Newport. lt's like putting Park Ave. and the Bower y together. Ridiculous! Lido Isle's problems a re completely different from those of Central NewpQ rt. Why not have Lido, Balboa Island, Linda Is le, Ha rbor Isle and Bay Shores in on e district? From th e tip of the Peninsula all the way to the west end of Seashore Dr. should be mostly in another separate district. You see what 1 mean. t know none of these ideas will ever be adopted, because they're too logical. But, I'm gonna keep talking about them, anyway. AI Fo rglt BOONDOGGLE OF THE WEEK: The county is about to form anolher •·super- agency'' of bureaucrats. Who do they think they're kidding? Fewer agencies with more people is )Jst as bad as a lot of agen cies. .. .. .. . . . • • • • Down at the s tore, Peg an~ the girls will be happy to show you our line of Colon y Paints.
