I see where they are baYing all tiDds of trouble up there with tbe tu man. Seems some of them want to register tbetr era!! In Oregoo, to get out of paying property tu·ln Calltornla. Heck, our yachtsmen around here tlgured out a loog time ago bow to beat the taxes. Some of tbem register their pleasure boats as commercial tJabtoc boats. They buy a cheap commercial license, and that gets them out of paytag the 11111 rate on property tax. Gets :em out of paytag sales tu, too, on anything tbey buy tor their yachts. Let's say you want to buy a new color TV tor your home. When you go down to the TV shop to close the deal, you tell tbe guy the sells really tor your yacht. You show htm JOUr commercial tlsblllg license and be can't charge you sales tax. Saves about $30 or $40. Same thlllg can be pulled If you're buytag a lot of other expensive Items, such as retrlgerators. Tbe Newport yachttag crowd bas been doing this tor years. A guy buys a little 2-ft. sword!lsl! plank and sticks It on his yacht, just In case anybody asks blm embarrasslag questloos. Some other toQ<s aren't as lucky. Up at Moss LIUIIIIng, lor eu.mple, the tu assessor goes out In his O'lrll little boat, pulls aloogslde tbe yachts, sees tolks drltlldog cocttalls and baYing a big time, and slaps tbem with a property tu assess- meaL I guess tbe tax asseuors up there are a little more 011 the t.U than their cootemporarlea In other places. Around bere, It's ldnd of risky to get tough with the yacbtlllg crowd. Some of tbem either bold blgb political omce, or mate ?mpalgn coatrlbutlou to somebody 'IIIIo does. But, what tbe bell; If tile yacbtsmOD doa't p&J their property tues, the bome- o'lrller and the small bas!Dessman can just be bit a little harder.
