The above is one of the many passages in the Bible ....tlich deals with it. I believe God has chosen the h"iend relationship as a special part of life, set apart from all other relationships. I alw believe it is important to have fr iends, and that it is God's will that we do. We can see the will of God in friendship through the manv ex- amples found throughout the Bible . We look at Jonathan and David. In 1 Samuel 20:17, Jon· athan said he lo ved Dav id as his own soul. But probably the greatest u - ample of frie ndship found in the Bible is that of Christ and His disciples. SEALED WITH .THE SPIRIT "In whom ye also trusted. 1fter that ye heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your salva· tion: In whom also, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise" (Ephe- sians 1:13). Most Engl ish nanslations of the Bible make it clear that the words "a her that," in the above passage, actually have an imrnedi· ate result in view. Upon hearing (or "heeding") we believed, and upon believing we were sealed with the Spirit. What IS perhaps even more importantlo note, 1s the fac t that upon believing "the gospel of ... salvation," we are "sealed WITH " the "Holy Sp1nt ," not "by " the Spirit. There is a d1flerence be· tween the two, which can be s1 mply il lustrated. Here is a housew1fe,let us say, who is "putting up" jam or pre- serves and seating each jar with wa x. Now, the jars are being M:~ed "by" the wom•n. but lhe is sealing them "with'.' wax. Thus it is not merely thlt the Holy Spirit causes believers to be tel led and made MCure. Rather He Him· self is the seat thlt kHps us eternally secure IS God's loving children. We ere sealed, not "by the Spirit," but ~ith the Spirit," -the Spirit Himself the Seal! It is wonderful indeed to know that before the bar of God, the simplest believer in Christ has been fully justified (Acts 13:38, 39). But this is a court action, a matter of record. Buidu this, the Spirit, who first brought the sinner under conviction, now gives him lif•-.ttN~IIiftJ. This is why Romans 8:"2 tells us that "the law of the Spirit-(that) of life in Christ, hath made me free from the law of sin and death." My C hristian life had ground to a halt , and my faith wavered. Did God really care about me? Water is a wo nderful tranquilizer for a troubled mind and battered emotiom. I spent many hours beside the la ke, drink- ing in the serenity and gaining inspira- tion from the grandeur of the mountains on the far s hore. And God was there too. waiting to re\·eal himself. One hot afternoon I sat on a small landing stage and dangled my feet in the cool water. A light bri!(:Ze played with my hair, a pair of swans rippled the water as they glided past, and I felt a t peace with all the world. This peace became disturbed by a senS<' of foreboding, an awareness o f change. A.n eerie stillness replaced the whisper of the breeze, and even the swans altered their behavior. They stood in the shallows-alert , expectanl. The light dimmed, the lake t urned grey-purple, and several holidaymakers ran for shelter. I looked with apprehen-· sian at the darkenini: sky but decided to stay where I was. A. deafening thunder clap followed a brilliant flash of light· ning, and the storm broke. Lightning ran down the mountainside beyond the lake, thunder roared overhead, but I still sat on the landing stage, small and in5iJ· nificant in the drama of the storm. My spine tingled with awe as a jagaed fork of lightning zipped across the water. Torrential rain soaked me in sec- o nds, but this fantastic display was too aood to miss. T1le Jake, previously so calm, whipped itsdf into a boilina cauldron of fury.
