Answering a question at last week's press conference, Mro Taubman said, "Lower cost housing, subsidized by the federal government, is a good idea; it insures a balanced community." It Is certainly dismaying t o hear such talk, and particularly from an execu- tive in such a key position . Federal housing has proved to be a disaster in our nation. The dismal reco rd in socialist-communist nations through- out the world also shows the same fai- lure of government to prov ide housing, There is no such thing as free rent, just as there are no free meals. So me- one has to pay for both, and when the government gets into the act, the price is doubled, and eventually, the take - over will be complete. • • • • • • • WELCOME TO THE BATTLE , ACLU I welcome the American Civil Liber- ties Union challenge of the Newport Beach newsrac k law. It is good to have an ally in a fight that is so vital to the protection of freedom for us alL The restrictions placed on the dis- tribution of newspapers is a direct assault on our First Am endment pro- tection in the U. S. Constitution. If there is any meaning to plain English language , the Newport Beach City Coun- cil IS infringing on the fr eedom of the press. lf that attack is not met and defeated, her e and a ll ove r the nation, freedom of t he pr ess will be lost, and thus the m ost effective obstacle to government tyranny will be destroyed . • • • • • T .V. Surprise! Folks in Corona del Mar have cars and they want some decent roads to drive them on. Any darn fool should have known that before now, but It took a "scientific survey" to convince City Hall. Now, It might take armed confilct to get the Clty Co uncil to 00 something about the tratnc, but at least they know now how the people feel. A few years back, when we got rid of the freewayt we said we were going to find other ways to handle the traffic. But, some guys never had any Intention of really doing anything. In fact, some guys STILL have oo Intention of doing anything, They llgure the traffic will go away II we just lgoore lt. lUke what Bill Lusk told the Council the other day. He said lgoorlng tralllc by ool building roads Is like refllslng to build a storm drain and thillldng It won 't rain. I see where this poll also turned up the Information that the people would like to see some otf.street parking lots. Years ago, when I was on the City CouncU, I tried to gel the merchants of Corona del Mar to get together and form a parking district. Back then, there was land available at reasonable cost. They have walled until land has gone sky-high, and lhey still haven't made a move. Well , they can complain about prices oow, but II they walt 10 more years, It will jusl cost mor•. The next thing we shoUld do Is llnd out how lhe people fee l about University Drive being extended across the Back Bay. That road woold take a lot of the traffic off the Coast Highway. It would also relieve Bristol Street, which Is getting almost as bad as the highway. This thing makes so much sense, it's amazing how we keep refusing to do 11. It's sort of like having a splitting headache lor 20 years and re- fllslng to take any aspirin. While we're doing all these surveys, we should ask lhe folks how they feel about a few more thJogs, too: Woold they like to see some toilets on the beaches? How aboUt a turn-around lor the Orange Counly Transit District busses at the end ol3Znd st.? What about a second bridge over the Upper Bay between WestclUI and Ne"Jllrt Center? Make II a toll bridge, and lt woold pay lor Itself. Do the people really wanl the commercial fisherman chased out of town? I'Ye cot a laeUng the polltlctaDI aren't gulng to go lor any more opinlou suneys. Now that they'n found out thai the people don't give the "right" UIS'O'ers lo the quootlons, City Hall will probably run out of quuttons.
