Language At City Hall It has always seemed to us that if the city of Newport Beach were the scene of 0 Romeo And Juliet," the con- flict between the two families would be listed in city · documents as an item about a curb cut. This is a way of saying that a reporter at city ball bu to dig through layers of verbiage to find subject matter, in order to determine if each item is news. For example, take a look at Item #l from the Planning Commission agenda for Oct. 10, 1985: .. A. General Plan Amendment 85-1 (c) (Continued Public Hearing) . .. Consideration of an amendment to the Land use Ele- ment of the Newport Beach Gener~ Plan so as to rcdesignate a _portion of the subject property from 'Low Density Residential' to a combined designation of 'Ad- ministrative, Professional and Financial Commercial' and "Retail and Service Commercial,' and the acceptance of an environmental document." We don't know how you react to this language, but we do a dim-out when we try· to read through it. Actually, the idea behind it is simple enough. Someone wants to upgrade the use of his land, from single-family detached housing to business and commercial use. Chances arc he will make more money off the land that way. We don't think that those who write public documents should make them so hard to understand. The job is to communicate with the public, so that any normally _ lit~~Ie person could easily read and understand the ISSUCi... If Romeo and Juliet were dying because their families were in a feud, we think the staff report should at least say something about a family disagTCCrnent. As it is now. the report would read: "Request to consider alteration of Municipal Code Chapter 31.45.64.91 ct al, to provide for the use of 45 in- ches" of curbing on Shakespeare Street 49 feet from Renaissance Lane." No one would ever know of the star-crossed lovers. Their story would be lost forever. But who cares? After all, the city decorum would be preserved, and the tradition of gobblcdgegook main- tai ned . -RA Baker Communications ...... ......... .......... 1 ..... en .... -Trlllll .......... Bassett & Tubach Enrich Our History In the current i•ue of Tltt Bay WIN/ow, the 3S-year-old Balboa Bay Club magazine, there is a story about the foun- ding of the Irvine Coast Country Club, and it's a fascinating bit of Newport Beach history. It seems that in 1953 Hadd Ring was talking to Myford .. Mike" Irvine. who owned the vast Irvine Ranch, after Irvine had played golf on a very hot day at the Santa Ana Country Club in 1953. When Irvine com- plained about the hot Santa Ana course, Ring suggested he build a course of his own on property he owned near the coast. Ring and his partner, the late Tom Henderson, wouJd run the coun- try club. .. With only a handshake, we bad a deal," Ring recalled. Today, the en- tire area is known u Newport Center. During the past few weeks, I have been privilepd to meet and get to know two men who have been closdy identified with the history of Irvine Coast Country Club since its inception. One is Rich Bassett, famous worldw.ide news photOlfapher and doee friend of Myford Irvine. and tbe other is Henri Tubach, who wu manager of the Club for its first 10 years. then secretary and PR person right up to and includifta the present. These two young men - Bassett is 71 and Tubach will be 92 on his next birthday -know every member and every blade of grass at Irvine Coast. ft was Bassett who told me how the club was put together financially. He knew Myford Jr- v in e -through three associations -the Rotary Club. the golf course -both were golf nuts -and the Episcopal Church. "I went to church with him the day he killed himaclf," 8auett recalled ... He WU a very thy and iDtrolpective mu. Newport Harbor High's foot- ball team had the scare of its season last Thursday night, Halloween. Oct. 31, as Universi- ty High put on the pressure and moved the ball weJI. But Unjver- sity fell short in the end and Newport was trcaled to a 33-24 Halloween win. Bryan Wildman led the Sai lors scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Shane Foley was his usual tricky self, completing 17 out of 20 passes for 225 yards and one intercep- tion (his first in three weeks). "University was the problem tonight." Sailor Coach Mike Giddings said . "They've been able lo move the ball all year long. the only · problem in the past is that they turned the ball over. tonight, they didn't do that." University showed no mercy as it took the ball early and marched down the field for 8 I yards in I I plays. Tailback Craig Belle ran from the twenty yard-line and with the extra point, the Trojans led 7-6. Uni- versity added a f~ld goal to make it 10.6 . The Sailors then iook the lead. 12.10, after Foley hit Andy Shepard on a 37·yard scoring strike, but the lead lasted only a short while as Uni's Belle scored again to give the Trojans a 18-J 2 halftime lead. The Sailors returned tired up in the second half as Wildman and Kevin McCldland scored on short runs to push the Sailors ahead for the game. Belle got Uni as close as it would get with a two-yard run, but Wildman's third score of the night was the Sailors' icing on the cake as they upped their season record to 7-1 and league record to 5-0. Uni dropped to 0-5 in league and 1-7 for the season. Wildman gained 73 yards on 15 carries and Sheppard was the leading receiver with 79 yards on three catches. McClelland had seven catches totaling 58 yards. Newport plays Woodbridge at Davidson Field Friday, Nov. 8 Uni is at home against Estancia Thursday, Nov. 1. The Corona deJ Mar f ootbaJI team looked as if it might pull off ffte--bi~ upset of the week Saturday, Nov. 2, when it blasted Saddleback 7-0 in the ti rst quarter .of a game played at Newport Harbor High. But the Sea Kings learned why the Roadrunners arc so highly ranked when Saddleback didn't allow the Sea Kings another point and the game end- ed at 32-7. CdM tailback Sean Turner scored during the Sea Kings' first pos'iCSSion, going over from the two-yard line. · After that, it wa s Saddleback's game as the Roadrunners scored 18 points in the first half to lead 18-7. Saddleback running back G lenn Campbell ran for 102 fards and two touchdowns to lead the Roadrunners. Danny ~ttveros aho lcond tlric., rv.n· nina for one touchdown and receiving the other. Quarterback Myron Butler had nine com· pietions totaling 16S yards for Saddleback. After the Sea Kings scored in the first quarter, they couldn't get across midfJCld for the rest of the half and fa red no better than their own twenty for the remainder of the game. Part of the problem oriai;nated with the specilJ teams u the Sa Kings used three different punters hitting seven punts and averaging only 21 yards. Saddleback took advantage of the field position each time. The Roadrunners ran inside fre- quently during the second half and that was the key to their success. This intimate and charmi ng restaurant has long been a land- mark on Coast Highway near Mac Arthu r Boulevard . Deservedly so. It is. by the way. not to be confu sed with Tavern By the Sea in Laguna Beach (formerly Hemingways Tavern By the Sea). This is the one and only Hemingways and it is one of the supreme dining spots in this area. When my wife and I arrived, we' 'were greeted by a most ef- ficient maitrc d' who escorted us to our table. There we were treated to a very, very special dinner. The firs t course began with a deep-fried bric cheese coated in seasoned bread crumbs. It was a de l iciou s and welcomed appetiier and a harbinger of all the remarkable dishes to come.
