FE8RUMv 13.1W Newport Bay Nitrate level Up, Bergeson Calls for Meeting byhekS''w Recent discoveries of high levels of nitrates in Newport Bay has prompted State Sen. Marian Bergaon to caU for a meeting of responsible parties. A spokesman for Bergeson ·s office said a meeting of those representatives is scheduled for her Newport Beach office Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. Further details were unavailable. Presumably. the meeting would i~clude representatives of three large nursuries in Irvine whose operations result in a large amount of f~rtilizer runoff. the Irvine Ranch Water District. the Envi- ronmental Management Agency. the Irvine Co.-which owns the land on which two of the nurseries op'erate- and other state agencies. The meeting is in response to pub- lication this week of the results of a study done by Dr. John Skinner. a Newport Beach physician whose interest in biology and the bay led him to conduct tests on why the bay is such a murky color. In part. he found that run-off of chemicaJ fertilizers from the three nur- series could average as much as 3.000 pounds of nitrate daily. depending on the amount of water flow. Skinner said a total of 12.000 pounds a day could be flowing into the bay from San Diego Creek, accord.mg to the two dozen tests he performed last month along bay tributaries. The nitrates are not hazardous to humans or wildlife. Skinner is quick to point out. But the heavy flow of nitrates. combined with sunlight. began a process he called eutrophication. the oventimulation of plant and algae life which causes the bay to be brown in color and which can eliminate many types of fish by using up alJ the oxygen. In a saltwater bay like Newport's. Skinner said. the daily tidal flushing prevents serious eutrophication through dilution. The samples. which were tested by the county's EnvironmentaJ Management Agency. found concentrations averaging as much as 400 milligrams of nitrates per million. and sometimes much higher. flowing into San Diego Creek. which winds up in the bay. The run-off is caused by the nurseries· practice of mixing the nitrate fertilizers with water through irrigation. As much as SO pcTCCnt of the water escapes and no method of recapturing the run-off and reusing it has been implemented. EMA studies from 1980 coincided with Skinner's findings. which further dispel the notion that urban development ClllllA ....... 2 New Airport Plan Sees More Flights, Less Noise A temporary plan calling for more flights and less noise into John Wayne Airport was proposed Feb. 10 by airpon manager George Rebella. This is the 14th ftJm Allen has written and directed. and it is not related to the half-hearted. o ne-joke mania (Zelig and A Midsummer Nigh1 $ Sex Comedy) which has occupied him in recent years. Instead, this is a fitting companion to Annie Hall and Manha11an, a return to the richly romantic heights he scaled in the 70s. Hannah and Her Si.J1ers is. quite simply. one of the best. The reason is simple: on the freeway of love, Allen is not only a heavy traveler, but also still a confirmed optimist, despite an occasional collision or two (or even three). There is no doubt that the play has plenty of riotous laugh lines. but to sustain itself for the full two and a half hours is something of a test of the durability of the stars. The mere fact that they keep things rolling along at a frenzied pace is a tribute to their artistry. It is a simple story about two famous movie stars of the past who are asked to do a play together. The hitch is they have disliked each other for years. so the story line centers around this conflict. The two fight . rip. slash and tear at each other. and in the end indulge in a little cama- raderie and even some sentiment. There arc times when the play is even vulgar. "Everybody wants to know about their dreams because it's a universal experience ... Sassin says. -1cs only natural for so~ one to have some notion about their dreams. People dream about the past and about their expec- tations and anticipations. their fears. pleasures and wishes . .. Dreams can be an imponant approach to learning about some- one's personality. When people tell me their dreams they elaborate on the information that they remember. How you describe your dreams i~ an imponant indication of what's going on in your wakeful life. That's why psychiatrists and psychoanalysts can make good u~ of your dreams. - Since ancient times. dreams have mystified mankind. Their interpretation has led to the downfall of monarchies. changed the course of kingdoms and served a!) a powerful means of predicting the success of harvests and the outcomes of marriages and con- cept ion!I. The Greek gods often I v1 s ired mortals in a dream to / foretell major events. In the Bible. Jo~ph saves Egypt from famine / and flood after interpreting the Pharaoh's dreams. There are more modern-day examples of the influence of dreams. T he EngJi~h poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge aid he com- posed '"Kubla Khan-in a dream. then awoke from his opium- induccd sleep to copy the prose onto paper. The m yc;t1que of dream~ culminated in the 20th century "uh Sigmund Freud's psychoa- nalytic approach. Freud o;uggcsted that dreams reflect the repressed de~1re\ and wishes of the waking li fe and thu' are .. the royal road to the unconscious. - But in the 1950s. physiological \t ud1e-; tended to shaft the em- pha~15 of dream investigation. The result was a more scientific interpretation of dreams as a basic biological function. Sleep •~ marked by four distinct C\tages that can be measured by brain wave patterns as well as changes in heart. lung. muscle and hormonal activity. The dream- ing stage of sleep occurs when the eyes dart back and forth in what 1s known as a period of rapid eye movement (REM). The stages of non-REM and REM sleep occur in cycles of about 100 minutes each. and people may experience four to six cydesdurinsan averaF nipt's sleep. People often remember dreams that occur just prior to •..t~ w~ aiw from the •c)de~llEMsleep. At one till)e it wa1 tboupt that insanity or depression miJht be linked to people depri'YCd of REM alccp. Dreamina wu con- sidered an eumtiaJ fundion of life. Thouah most people dream. there are cases of people who do not experience REM ,sleep.
