Opera singer Beverly Sills will
be the featured speaker at the
Town Center Celebrity Lecture
Series which begins next month.
Sills will speak OD Jan. 23 at
10:30 a.m. at the Edwards
Cinema Theater in the Newport
Center. Her lecture focuses on
tracing her singing career from
its start in BrookJ~ N. Y. to her
present position as general di.rec-
tor of the New York City 0perL
Other lectures include Dr.

A 24-year-old Newport Beach
man was arrested Monday
morning and charged with the
rape of his 28-year-old neighbor,
police said Tuesday.
Newport Beach police spokes-
person Kent Stoddard said that
Rafael Rodriguez was arrested
without incident--as he was
leaving the scene of the alleged
rape on Main Street Monday
mommg.
According to Stoddard, tpe
victim gave this account:

neighbor-who all live in separ-
ate rented rooDl5 upstairs at 30 l
Main St.-began drinking and
watching television in the vic-
tim's room together Sunday
evening.
A short time later, Stoddard
said, Rodriguez allegedly
assaulted and raped the vi~
who then managed to escape and
flee to the neighbor.'s room.
Officers responding to the call
arrested Rodriguez as he cxitcd-

Bristol Street to four in each
diRction to handle the traffic
that is expected by the year 20 l 0.
That is the conclusion of a
report issued this week. by the
county's traffic planning-staff
and ref erred by the Board of
Supervison to affected cities for
comment. After the cities
respond, the Board is expected
to dea>ate deletion of University
Drive from the county's Master
Plan of Streets and Highways.
The street is opposed by local
cnvtroninental groups because it
would akirt the sensitive UpPet'
Bay ecological areL It is not in
the Local Coastal Plan for the
area approved by the Coastal
Commission. and Supervisor
Tom Riley bas moved in the past
to delete it from the coun1y·s
street plan.
That move ran into opposi-
tion from other supervisors last
year, however. and the new
report is one outgrowth of that
inconclusive debate.
The report concludes that
while University Drive would be
an important link between the
industrial and commercial areas
of Irvine and northern Newport
Beach and the residential areas
of Costa Mesa and Huntington
Beach, .. alternatives to not hav-
ing the facility are f easiblc."
The findings were based on
projections or development in
the area~ as outlined in the
gencral·plans of area cities and
the county. Traffic volumes were
estimated from these
demographic predictions.
The report stated that by 20 IO.
if University Drive is put
through to Jamboree. it Will be
handling some 32,000 can ~r
day. Most of this traffic. the
repon concludes. will be people
commuting between the Costa
Mesa and Irvine areas.'
Because of the constrictions
on traffic flo~ formed by the
Upper Bay and John Wayne
Airport. the report said. there
arc only three alternative routes
for these cars if University Drive
is not extended: 1he Corona del
Mar Freeway (Route 73). the
segment of Bristol Street that
parallels that freeway. and to a
lesser extent. Pac ific Coast
Highway.
Improvements will no t be
necessary o n PCH. the re port
stated . but the other two routes
will have to have two additiona l
lanes apiece to handle the load.
and ramps will have to be added
to connect the westbound Route
73 with southbound Route 55 .
The total cost of the improve-
ments to Bristol and Route 73
is estimated to be in excess of

/ The political manifesto of Newport Beach's three leading
I slow-growth groups, Newport 2000, Stop Polluting Our
Newport, and Gridlock was released yesterday.
We're happy to see their intentions made public. Their
handling of the issues should help to promote discussion of
topics and raise awareness of the battles that are shaping
Newport.
The goals stated in the paper are .fourfold: an early vote
on the traffic management ordinance; limitations on high-
rise developments; re-enactment of a controversial conflict-
of-interest law repealed in 1984; and change the dates of city
council elections.
It was the last item that particularly caught our attention.
The groups would like to sec the city council elections
consolidated with the Ntwpot-Mesa school board elections
in November of odd numbered years. There are, of course,
political implications to the proposal. Shifting thc,council
elections to odd years would mean a smaller turnout, and
a smaller turnout is thought to be good for the slow-growtbers.
The groups argue that shifting the council elections would
mean all local issues could be deah with on the same non-
partisan election date, MWhere they would not be lost m the . many of the nails were driven
by Mike and Ruth. In fact, Ruth
redesiped the interior, relo-
crush of state and national elections ...
That's true, and not a bad idea. But we think a better
one would be to do the opposite-consolidate the school
board elections with the even-year November elections-or
even the even-year June, elections. This approach would do
two things: eliminate a costly extra election date, and
dramatically raise voter particiption.
While our proposal may indeed cram all the issues and
offices onto one ballot, in any type of election reform, raising
voter participation should be the bottom line.

Longtime Newport Beach councilman, school trustee and
resident Don Strauss suffered a stroke just prior to New Y car's
Day.
Fortunately, his wife Dorothy tells us, the prognosis is
good-only a bit of speech therapy will be netcssary, and
he only figures to miss a few council sessions.

day Michael Manahan worked
for the Irvine Company.
He was not on the Executive
Committee, nor the Board of

Yet beyond a doubt, Mike Man-
. ahan was the most respected,
admired, loved and honored
employee of the Irvine Com-
pany. When he closed bis desk
at S o'clock one afternoon last
week, be closed a beautiful
chapter in the life of Orange

pany.

outside surface of the cornea. These tiny incisions cause the
cornea to flatten, thus partially or fully correcting the myopia.
While Radial Kcratotomy is usually performed to correct
nearsightedness, a modified version of the procedure can be
used to alleviate high degrees of astigmatism. Astigmatism is a
condition in which the cornea is irregularly shaped-more oval

surgeon makes incisions which ftanen only part of the cornea,
changing its abnormal oval shape to a more normal spherical
shape.
To be eligible for R.K, you must be at least 18 years old,
have stable myopia and be unable or unwilling to wear contact
lenses and /or glasses. The actual Radial Keratotomy procedure
takes less than half an hour. If it is performed in an outpatient
facility, the patient can go home the same day.
RK is a delicate procedure that not all surgeons are
equally qualified to perform. Before trusting your eyes to any
surgeon. you should ask the following questions:
• How many RK cases have you done?
• How many of your patients are seeing 20140 or berter a
year after the R K?
• Do you have any RK patients who are willing to talk to me?
• Have you taken an RK course? "

Friends (and critics) have
commented that it's very seldom
tba~ your reporter says some-
thing unkind about a local
restaurant in this column. True,
for good reason. The restaurant
business in and around Newport
Beach is such that if an eatery
isn't doing a very good job it
becomes history before very
many people get a chance to find
out what's wrong.
So, yes, I truly did enjoy my
dining out experiences both for
this column and on my own
during 1986. Which is not to say
that I haven't had favorites. Oh
have I had favorites. Herc are
my picks for the Kbests" and
.. mosts" of my dining around
town last year.
BEST RESTAURANT
OVERALL takes a lot of
thought. This one includes
everything; price, ambiance,
service, food and general atmos-
phere. Surprisingly, the choice
lies within the confines of a local
hotel. Hotels·seem to be making
a comeback these days. Morcll's
at the Irvine Hilton and Towers
was my favorite place to dine in
1986. Creative menu, genuinely
warm service and painstakingly
present~ and prepared food
make this a top spot for anyone
who loves to eat.
BEST NEW RESTAURANT
kudos go to Ember~ in Costa
Mesa. Despite an unusual loca-
tion, Ember's bas everything it
takes to make it locally; atmos-
phere, service, great pricing, and
knock-'em-in-the-aisles food.
Don't be surprised if you need
to call days in advance for a
reservation at Ember's in 1987.
MOST REGRETTABLY
CLOSED restaurant in 1986 is
the now-a-memory Monaco's on category for elegance-in display
PCH. The rumors ran wild when of edible a.it, but if there was,
the doors closed and whatever -Maxwell's would win hands
the reason for this ftne establish-
ment's demise, it is to be
mourned. Cbef Driml had his act
together, the food was heaven
and the lamb carpaccio will be
missed.
MOST ELEGANT RES-
TAURANT has to go to Le
Chardonnay at the Registry
Hotel. Everything here is just top
drawer. That evenin1 lives on in
memory by virtue of the rich
interior, solicitous service, ~.AJd
wonderful food. My pick foe any
occasion calling for more than
a touch· of class.
BEST BRUNCH BUFFET
honors bClon1 slightly up the
coast at Maxwell's in Hunting-
ton Beach. Despite the drive put
of town, the show is worth every
mile and then some. There's no
down. "
BEST SERVICE BRUNCH
is really a trump'5d up category
to cover the delights served at
Le Midi. The combination of
get-jt-younelf and brougbt-to-
you-in-style appeals to everyone
and the food is beyond compkare.
French provincial cooking at its
very best.
BEST LUNCH ON A TIME
LIMIT honors go to Chili's on
PCH. The fajitas for two is great
fare and the service is prompt,
courteous and smiling. These
honors might have gone to
Mimi's in the Costa Mesa Court-
yards, but the wait makes Mimi's
a place for people_ who either eat
lunch at I r:oo a.m. or have
unlimited time to sit and chat.
BEST LUNCH WITH TIME
TO I.ILL belonp to Amelia'&
on Balboa hlaod. Not that the
serviCe is slow, or ~wait Iona,
you just need to linaer in this
cozy Italian atmosphete to set
the. most from your lunch. Def-
initely my choice for a business
or celebration luncheon at any
time of year. -
BEST ETHNIC FOOD is a
tough one. Chinese wins out and
my choice is The Lotm on
Harbor Blvd. in Costa Mesa.
Elegant and without any hint of
Chinese cafeteria, The Lotus is
a terrific place run by savvy
sophisticated people. Pricina is
a trifle higher than other local
Chinese eateries, but you get
what you pay for.

SERT goes to Pleasant Peasant.

With most of the critics in
town bluting away at "Sin gin•
In th Rain," one might expect _
something less than exhilarating
stage fare. But the reception
accorded the show at the Per-
forming Arts Center proved one
thing-audiences are the true
judge and they quickly wrapped
up the musical with joy.
Actually, the musical bas
much to recommend it, not the
lcut of which is the lovely score
by N acio Herb Brown and
Arthur Freed. One never tires of
such songs as -Singin' Jn The
Rain," "You Stepped Out of a
A~" "You >.re My Lucky
Star," -and "You Were Meant
For Me. "Then there is the very
exciting dancing of Bract
Moranz, especially in his .. Make
'Em Laugb"spectacular. And, of
course, there is the memorable
dance number done in the rain
in the incomparable style of Don
Simione.
There are the perlormanccs of
Simionc and Moranz adding
further lustre, and the dizzy,
dense, and delectable Jennifer

the Cal State Fullerton Titan
Gym on Dec. 21 concentrated
itself against a nightclub set
stage. To the shouts chanting the
·band's theme song, General
Public danced into psychedelic
flubes of spotlights in pink,
green~ and blue. The lights
turned orange out at the
audience and a ringin& boister-
ous spell caught all l 0,000 or so
in the sold-out gymnasium.
Never bu a band entertained
an audience with such character
and energy. Right off, lead
singers Dave Wakeling and
Ranting Roger hit the popular

youths ranging in age from early
teens to later twenties danced on
the open but densely concen-
trated gym floor and in the
bleachers on the building's
perimeter. The band constantly
involved its audience in its music
with Ranting Roger waving his
arms for everyone to join in.

Where other concerts this
season may have fallen short,
General Public more than com-
pensated . After the second
encore, most everyone was still
cheering at the base of the stage
begging for more. Even the
opening band, The Buddy Sys-
tem, was fairly good. While
some may have thought that the
tightly packcd ... gym set-up was
a problem. it actually seemed
only to add to the fun of the
concert creating a true nightclub
gig atmosphere.

All in all, it was a spirited,
exubcran~ and fun-filled show
that survived even its rather
laborious· and oftrly trite plot.
But in the end-who cares? It
was fun all the way. something
to lift the spirits, and the kind
of musical that audiences still
find infectious.
Lawrence Kasha directed the
production, which was choreo-
graphed by Peter Gennaro. In
spite of a few awkward moments
in the first p~ it all zipped
along wiib sparkle and excite-
ment.
The one thing much writteti
about the show is that the film
starring Gene Kelly, Donald
o•eoonor, and Debbie Rey-
nolds was too potent to be
redone by anyone. It is true that
these three were radiantly won-
derful, but Simiooc, Moranz.,
and Cynthia Ferret" make the
roles thein. Besides, the stage is
a vastly different medium than
the screen and one has to judge
the show on its merits alone and
not on what was done in a
different medium.

musicals to be done at the
Pei:fonning Arts Center. It was
a good opener and one only
hopes t1-the future produv
tions will be as lit.able.. It is also
a shame that these big shows are
only allowed to play about a
weet•s run each. The reason?

Mar recently hosted the UCl
Interfaith Foundation for a
presentation by representatives
of five religions on •The Com-
mon Tb.reads of Religion."'
The faiths represented were
Christian Science, Islam, Bud-
dhism, Babai and Roman
Catholicism. The locaJ leaders of
the Jewish faith were attending
an educational conference on
this day and unable to attend,
according to Nancy Jenks,
Director of the Interfaith Foun-
dation.
Despite differences in beliefs,
the speakers noted several com-
mon ideas that showed the
similarities among these reli-
gions. The major o~ is that all
believe in the Golden Rule: •no
unto others as you would have
them do unto you."' They all
believe that the prophets of the
Old T estameot., like Moecs and
Noah, were anointed and given
great power by God, and that
Jesus Christ was .a p0werful
influence in the lives of mankind.
