Radial Keratoton1y
Radial Keratotomy, or RK. is a delicate opbtbalm.ic surgical
procedure which. is used to correct the condition of myopia, or
nearsightedness. Nearsighted individuals experience bluny vi-
sion when they look at objects which are far away. 1bis is
because the eye is too long or the c:omca is too steeply curved,
causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of
directly on it.
Through Radial Keratotomy, the surgeon treats this prob-
lem by making eight to sixteen tiny radial iocisioos on the
outside surface of the cornea. These tiny incisiom came the
cornea to flatten . thus pa.rtially or fully corrediag the myopia.
While Radial Keratotomy is usually pcdormed to oonect

used to alleviate high degrees of astipnatism. Astigmatism is a

Putting an issue to a vote is something we Americans love
to think of as fair. When the state of California put a lottery
to the vote, the people spoke, and they said 'yes.' The picture
was pretty, we help ourselves and we help pur schools. We
also help thole responsible for causing the ·neec1 for a lottery

Beginning in October 1985, Californians designated one
third of every-dollar spent on the lottery to the state's schools
as supplementary funds. These funds were not designed to
be included in the state's overall educational budget, nor were
they intended as funds for purchasing primary textbooks,
hiring teachen, or building schools. ·
"Our Schools Win Too" sound the ad'7 as millions of people
purchase millions of tickets attempting to become winners.
But if there ever were a truly deserving winner, it is the
schools, the intended winner. To admit that our state school
system needs to win is to admit that schools are in a sorry
state of affairs-which monetarily, they are. ..
Reports on tlR efficiency of the supplemental funds are
mixed, but in an age where Gov. Deu.kmejian bu called State
School Superintendent Bill Honig a "demagogue"for wanting
~ education to have a larger c11t in the budgetary pie, it's not
surprising that some, like Newport-Mesa Superintendent
John Nicoa have blasted so-called increases in the state
educational budget for including lottery money, which in
accordance to the wishes of the voters, it shouldn \.
Such W.Cudging~ on the figures leave doubt as to whether
our state leaders, in particular our governor, take seriously
the need to substantially increase the quality of education
through an honest monetary commitment.
So to those whom the lottery has smiled upon, and to
those whom it has devastated, keep in mind that you are
helping in many ways. By playing, not only do you bdp
bail out the state school syste~ which the state itself admits
is lacking, but you also help the state skirt its responsibility
for its own problem. Fair, isn' it?

The Zonta Clubhouse, located across the street from
Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach. is a
$1 million facility. It was built and is maint~ as a
community service by the Zonta Club of N~wport Harbor.
Features of the clubhouse include a lovely leaded glass

The Zonta Clubhouse is completely equipped with a hotel

Putting an issue to a vote is '°mething we Americans love
to think of a fair. When the state of California put a lottery
to the vote, the people spoke, and they said 'yes.• The picture
was pretty, we help ourselves and we bel~pur schools. We
also help those responsible for causjng the need for a lottery
get away with a distortion of the truth.
~in October 1985, Californians designated. one
third of every dollar spent on the lottery to the state's schools
as supplementary funds. These funds were not designed to
be included in the state's overall educational budget, nor were
they intended as funds for purchasing primary textbooks,
hiring teachers, or building schools. ·
"Our Schools Win Too" sound the ads, as millions of people
purchase millions of tickets attempting to become winners.
But if there ever were a truly deserving winner, it is the
schools, the intended winner. To admit that our state school
system needs to win is to admit that schools are in a sorry
state of affairs-which monetarily, they are.
Reports on the efficiency of the supplemental funds are
mixed, but in an age where Gov. Deukmejian has called State
School Superintendent Bill Honig a "demaaogue"for wanting
education to have a larger cut in the budaetarY pie, it's not
surprising that some, lite Newport-Mesa Superintendent
John Nicoll, have bluted so-called increases in the state
educational budget for including lottery money, which in
accordance to the wishes of the voters, it shouldn l .
Such "fudging" on the figures leave doubt as to whether
our state leaders, in particular our governor, take seriously
the need to substantially increase the quality of education
through an honest monetary commitment.
So to those whom the lottery has smiled upo~ and to
those whom it has devasta~ keep in mind that you are
helping in many ways. By playing, not only do you belp
bail out the state school system, which the state itself admits
is lacking, but you also help the state skirt its responsibility
for its own problem. Fair, isnl it?
