Since the late 19S0s, the effec- tiveness of one such alternative, acupuncture, bas slowly come under scrutiDy b¥-lJ .S. doctors and researchers interested in qualifying this S,000-year-old Oriental health system. With the opening up of the People's Republic of China in the 1970s, the American public received their first taste of Oriental medicine as acupuncture clinics invaded the scheme of American "'pop" culture. Today, acupunc- ture has won its way into the hearts of a public hungry for easily acce$Sible and affordable cures. ••Acupuncture works by reducing the body's healthy energy," explained Dr. Watson Tung of Tungs Acupuncture Clinic in Corona del Mar ... It adjusts the energy so that the body's resistance is increased and returned to homeostasis." Tung, 34, states that all bodily ailments can be explaibed in terms of .. Yin and Yan&"' (the Oriental principle of dualistic monism) and that acupuncture sets out to -put the body in balance." .. Western medicine emphas- izes the outside cause, eliminates the symptoms and (you) elimi- nate the problem. Acupuncture is only one 11art of Oriental medicine. One of the criticisms directed against acupuncture is that since the Eastern system of health maintenance involves a whole different lifestyle-which takes into account diet, exercise, and treatments such as bodily manipulation, berbology, acu- puncture and moxibustion, the patient here in America wbo lives a less structured lifestyle cannot expect to reap the total benefits of just one aspect of Oriental medicine. Dr. Tun1, an author and professor of Oriental meclicine, diaagrccs with such claims. 225 E. 17TH ST .• COST A MESA 19nO BEACH BLVD .. HUNTINGTON BEACH 963-6667 . Bets the guy who was Secre- tary of the Interior a few yean back. You know, charged with the sacred tru&t of preserving our nation's natural resources for f uturc generations. He was once quoted as saying, in essence, that preserving resources for future generations is silly because Judgment Day is at band and there will be no more future generations to save the resources for. kcmcmber F.dmund Hillary? He's the guy who climbed Mt. Everest some 30 ycan ago ~ when asked why he went to the considerable trouble to do so, be replied, "Because it's there." Hodel and the oil industry maintain that the leasing pro- gram is necessary to "lessen our reliance on unstable foreign sources of oil." Well, that sounds like a fme public service, all right. That is, until you look at the projections ; and see that the offshore reserves are enough to meet the energy needs of the nation for a few days-that's right, days. In other words, a couple percent of the annval national consumptioa. In other other words, a s~ fraction of a percent of the consumption over the 20 or 30 years exploration and extraction would take. Which brings us to Donald Hodel He~s Watt's successor in the Interior job. And he's appar- ently Hillary's successor in spirit. The costs, real and potential, of such activity seem to have hardly been considered. Acst.het- ics aside (and aesthetics are an important consideration in an area heavily dependent on tour- ism), is it wise to start putting oil platforms willy-nilly in the midst of some of the most heavily trafficked waten in the world! We think not. And what would be the effects of a major spill. which may not be probable but is certainly possible? We think it would be catastrophic for the area ·s fishing and tourist industries. Time of my Life · BYJIM Watt can perhaps be excused, or at least understood, for wanting to allow offshore oil drilling in Southern California waters. He was simply translat- ing his personal convictions into policy (and helping out the oil industry, which had given him his start in the resource biz by hiring him to ta.kc environmen- talists to court). Legacy of a Kansas boy . who helped build Newport But what\ BodeJ's excuse? Last week, the incumbent Secretary of the Interior revived the oflabore drilling plan. Once more,. the federal government i.s proposing to lease large offshore tracts to oil companies for exploration and possible com- mercial drilling. It seems that Hodel simply wants to go for the oil because it's there. The fact that the ~.. in question is an in- appropriate place for such activ- ity docsn' 1C1Cm to have entered into bis thinking. L---~.-------J BY ROBUlT CllilBE The Corona del Mar Sea K.i.ogs moved into sole posses- sion of fust place in the ~-View League last week by defeating rivals Estancia and Tustin in a pair of thrillen. On Wednesday, CdM rallied from a six-point fourth quarter deficit to pull out a S0-47 win before a wild, capacity crowd at Estancia High School That win moved the Sea Kings into a tie for fint place with the Eagles and the Tillers. "I've been here (CdM) 17 years and this was a typical Estancia game-it happens every year, .. said Sea~ coach Paul Orris after his vanity'I · narrow victory. Ahead by one point 48-47, and in possession of the ball with a minute left to play, the Sea K.inp ran the clock down until Chris Hook was fouled by Estancia's Pat Norville with 25 seconds remaining in the game. Hook., who bad 12 points on the night, missed the frecthrow and the Eagles still bad time to score. But Estancia's Brian Ttft mis-passed the ball to Markus Muller-Stach, who was then fouled by Osmin Campos with three seconds remaining. The ref erec ruled Campos' foul inten- tional, which meant CdM would get the ball regardless of the free throw outcome. Muller-Sue~ with three seconds left to play, made one f reethrow but miuc:d the second leaving the score 49- 47 and the Sea Kings in posses- sion. Osmin then f outed Bren- dan Gallagher on the inbound pass, who made one of two • freethrows to end the game SO- , 47. 04That intentional foul call took away any chance of us winning the game. But they played very well," said Estancia coach, Joe Reid. "They desen'ed to win." Darren Morris (7 points), the (>.~ 168-pound senior who bas led the Sea Kings' defensive and offensive drives all season, played the crucial role, taking out a dangerous l.ylc Mooney in the f o~ leaving the Eagles with no place to go. Wherever Mooney was, Morris was. Whe- never Mooney shot, Morris pressed-and it worked. WShutting down Mooney was the key," said Orris. 1be way be goes is the way the team goes. Darren Morris did an ouutand- ing job and you have to give bim all the credit be delena.. Although the Sea ~ings opened strongly. leading 19-11 in the first quarter. it was Estancia~, Brian Taft who put the Eagles ahead. Taft, who seemed to be able to score at will, was 8 for 8 in shooting attempts until early in the fourth quarter and ended with a game-high 22 points. Tift, along with a decline in freethrows and a weakening CdM press sent the Eagles a.bead • with 3: 10 remaining i.n tbe third. Bat aa.merous fouls and forced shots pve the Sea ~ their lead back. Friday the Sea Kings had another aeon: to sett.le with the Tustin Tdlen and did IO with a dn••tic 64.(iO victory. BY IUDY DUFFY Naming a raidence and plac- ing the paii.ted tile into the wall surrounding the property waits a thiD line behwal pretentious- ness and a natural extension of the nature of the property. This week's featured property, Villa Isabella, located at 429 Isabella Ten ace in Corona del Mar is a perfect eumple of the power of words to express the character and ambiance of a property without cnina into pretentious.- om wbae no quality exists. I isted by &-.. KMdw ... Aw Free • of Watafn•t Ho•a, 1-., at Sl.100,000, the property oflcn a sweeping view up the coastline in addition to privar::y and quiet found in few residences along the busy rout. Located at the cod of Isabella Terrace in the Corona del Mar Highlands area, the home sits above traffic noise at the end of a quiet cuklc-sac. The height gives it respite from low lying fogs and the pn:sent owner finds some satisfaction in sitting on a sunny balcony above the fog shrouded waterfront homes below. A sophisticated security sys.- tem safo-guarda occupants and possessions from intruden. Guests enter through an elec- tronically controlled gate into a near pcrf ect recreation of a Mediterranean villL The court- yard offers a jewel-like pool with spa and the surrounding walls and landscaping move the soul, if not the body, to the SUDDJ cli.mca that surround that far away mcca wit1a which COrou del Mar 1bares its climatic CODilitiom.
