TAm D. ODDI• ENDS"! 10 • ,_ 4 MY ll Im THE NEWPORT ENSIGN This idea's a killer The Japanese have a novel "research" idea. They want to kill 875 whales in the Antarctic Ocean to prove that the whale population is growing in those waters. This is roughly half the number killed by the Japanese whaling fleet annually before commercial whaling was halted by international treaty a few years ago. It is also the most outrageous attempt to exploit a legal loophole to come down the pike in some time. Using the Japanese logic, th• best way to save an endangered species would be to let the population go unmolested for a couple of years, then set the hunters loose. If they bag a bunch, then the population must be growing. Killing somehow becomes a procreative act .. Why are the Japanese engaging in this subterfuge? Because in the treaty banning commercial whaling activities, there is a clause. allowing the killing of the giant mammals for "research." In fact, there is no limit at all to ' I I the number of whales that can be killed for research purposes. "What you have is a continuation of commercial whaling under another name," said a Oreenpeace spokesperson. Indeed~ the Japanese arc not the only ones embarking on such murderous "research." South Korea and Norway, signatories to the whaling treaty, have also hurled their harpoons through the loophole, bloodying the waters with dying leviathans. · Whaling was once a form of hunting for survival, and still is for some isolated Eskimo enclaves that are allowed to continue their 176 hunts. Then Western civilization found the whales· oil and bones could be used for many purposes, from providing light by burning to providing aesthetic joy through scrimshaw art. Whales were hunted to the brink of extinction for these reasons. - - Now, however, other materials can be substituted for those derived from whales and modem-day whaling is completely unnecessary, serving only to preserve a small, outdated industry at the expense of the grandest mammals ever to grace the planet. The renewed slaughter cannot" be justified on economic nor research grounds. It is environmentally destructive. Killing hundreds of these · rare creatures in the ..name of "research" is the logic of genocide. We urge the United States government to use its influence with Japan and the other nations involved to end this flagrant abuse. Ruthie quickly called upon Mozart Camerata Society members to help: Nancy Hodson and Dick Nuthmann cooked the baked beans, Ruby and Jot Lloyd and Susan Jarvie chopped 150 pounds of cabbage, Elaine Lucas prepared the sauerkraut, Robert Smith raced to a K-Mart sale for the 200 pounds of charcoal. Mcanbile Ruthie went to Stater Brothers for 200 wien- ers and 700 hot dog buns a.nd then up to Long Beach for the 500 gourmet Polish and German sausages. Whereas the seller can occasionally save some money by working without the assistance of a broker who works full time selling homes, he also increases his risks of running into legal complications by doing so. Recent requirements in the real estate profession have increased dramatically, with the addition of all types of disclosure, inspections, warranty programs, and more. J.N. StUfanl Newport ••di t . I ay ANN'E'ITE WATSON Paoramic views of boating llCtivitica and tbe bluffs above P.atic Coast Highway provide tranquility and inspire peace of miad in this week's feature home, a.Lido bayfront co~om inium located ia the midst of one of Newport's most picturaque waterfront ICCDCS. WJbe view is ~lutdy sm••h- ing. All of the boat parades pus right by and the water .aivities present ever-changing scenes for the residents,"' said Lile Olloll who, along with Cyadlla a_. felcl, offen the listing through ColdweH Banker Resideattal Real Estate Sa +ka in Newport Beacb. Another World As guests pass through secur- ity gates and walk through a tropically landscaped entry courtyard, the home's magnifi- cent view begins to emerge. Once inside the home the breath- taking qualities of the Lido alcove arc evident and become the focal point of the prcdom- inently white decor which, in its subtlety, serves to enhance the home's exterior surroundings. The home's living room, din- ing area and kitchen all benefit from the waterfront view. A long balcony provides the opportun- ity to get even more united with the natural beauty unique to Lido. •1t•s amazing to find such a terrific property as this. The solitude and beauty of the area create a residence that certainly takes a person away from the cares of everyday life. The home is· easy to maintain, providing a free and easy lifestyle for the residents, .. said CJDdlia R..-.. feW. Mirror and Marble A marble fireplace and an adjacent mirrored wan create an artistic arran1ement that is reflected throughout the front. wing of the home. While priq,. in one direction, pests are treated to the beauty of the scene presented in the opposite direc- tion. The kitchen bas a cheerful atmosp~ while it overlooks picturesque waterfront views. Special features such as Corian cOU1Jtertop1 and teak wood parquet floon enrich the decor. Room to Entertain The back wing of the home bas two large bedrooms, an expansive den and a wide patio. The master suite and the den open to the patio which is dramatic with columns and plants. Chocolate brown is the predominant color in the den while luxurio~ rust tones dom- inate the master suite. French doors enhance the master suite's decor. Mirrored closet doors in the bedrooms and expansive storage areas are special features in this wing of the home. The home is perfect for enter- taining-especially for boating enthusiasts~ because it has its own personal dock for a large boat; also the Lido Channel is very deep in this area. Convenient Location Although the home gives the feeling of scculsion and privacy, it is within walking distance to the Lido Village which offers the finest restaurants and shopping as well as short walking distance to the ocean. -rb.is home constantly f asci- natcs people with its view. The location is very interesting and _close to everything including major roads. It's really a won- derful place to live,"' said Olson. FbWittaJ Facb Raitor Information ..
