Another airport will make JWA safer Like the weather, air traffic and airport problems arc things that are easy to talk about, but difficult to change. On August 31, the residents of a Cerritos neighbor- hood gathered for a moment of silence to remember those who died in the air and on the ground when an Aeromcxico passenger liner collided with a private plane and crashed into adjacent homes. Aside from remem- brance, they may have been praying that there won't be'a repeat of the incident. Residents whose homes lie under the flight paths for John Wayne Airport might be well advised to join them in prayer. It hasn't happened here, but it could. And it might. Recently Rep. Bob Badham (R-Newport Beach) called on the Federal Aviation Administration to create a radar service area (ARSA) around John Wayne Airport. Previously, he introduced legislation which would require aJl general aviation aircraft to install and use Type C transponders. The T ype C transponder lets air traffic control personnel see, not only location, but also altitude for small planes in busy areas. We endorse, strongly, both of Badham's recommen- dations. General aviation pilots have argued against both measures. While their concerns about the ARSA's effectiveness might be worth a listen, the argument that a Type C transponder, which costs approximately $600, is too expensive for some pilots doesn't wash. But as far as Bad ham's recommendations go, they don 1 touch on the heart of the matter. We sec the problem of too many planes in the air as being complicated by the facility which exists to serve them. John Wayne Airport is antiquated and over- crowded with everything from planes to baggage. Stopgap measures to keep things from deteriorating into chaos while the search continues for another airport site j ust aren't enough. John Wayne is an embarrassment to every citizen in Orange County. It 's time to quit playing politics with li ves and find a place to build a modem. safe. airport fo r county travelers. An advantage to living in this coas- tal area is the particularly worldly array of seafood restau- rants. The seaf'ood lover with the widest range of tastes could very easily tour the harbor area on a culinary journey spanning the globe. For the seafood farer in search of the gastronic delights of Italy, one local port of call not to be missed is Amelia ·s on Balboa Island. Amelia •s quaint, yet homey atmosphere, is a settling alter- native to the cxuavagance of some Italian restaurants. And a walk through Amelia ·s Old- W orld patio and into its cozy interior is just the kind of benh a hungry traveler can use after a bout with the parking and people of the crowded and frenzied Bal Island during summer. Although priding itself on its selection of Italian seafood dishes_ Amelia •s also off crs a wide selection of pasta dishes. and other traditional Italian meals guaranteed to satisfy vinually every taste. For some~ u lt.iian meal would not be complete without a fine wine. Amelia's extensive list is sure to make comp~ a.Dy meal and complement their fine food with the finest of wines. The only part of dining at Amelia ·s that may deviate from the relaxed experience and cause a bit of tension is deciding just which of their many specialty dishes to choose. If seafood is your catch, making this decision may be harder than usual. However. one standout on their fine scaf ood menu is the Calamari Irma. Stuffed with f rcsh crab meat and topped with almonds, the cala- mari is served with linguini and adorned by an exquisite white wine sauce which lends itself beautifully to the firm texture and flavor of the calamari. Should pasta be more the order of the day, Amelia's Can- nelloni stuffed with turkey, veal and cheecse, and lightly covered by a white wine sauce, is highly recommended. Another prime pasta pick is the Torteloni. Filled with veal, chicken. proscuitto and cheese. and delightfully seasoned, this dish makes its mark on the rest of the meal. If a pasta dish with a tomato sauce is more to your likin& the Linguine with meat sauce is certainly a richly seasoned affair. Puhapa too tomat~y for some tutcs, it's a must for garlic lovers. Most dinners at Amelia's come with your choice of soup or aalad, ud all dinners are lel'Ved with a bearty whole wheat bread_. Jennifer Gray is stellar as ~, the nice girl who discoven dancing, sex and love in her family's visit to a Catskill resort in 1963. Patrick Swayze is virile and earnestly true as the dance instructor who ignites her, and Eleanor Bcrg- stein 's script has been martly directed by the dance-wise Emile Ardolino. Apart from a f cw nifties the movie lacks wit, style and purpose; beach pic- tures arc so inane that there's little room for satire, and although the film was made with good humor, it9s dull and often dumb. Among the drop-ins are Pee-wee Herman {in a swift blast of energy), Bob Denver, Ed Byrnes, Dwcczil Zappa, Don Adams and (looking great) Con- nie Francis. Directed by the Aussie novice, Lyudall Hobbs.
