Around the world, the symbol of the Red Cross is most often the first at the scene of any disaster. Help from the Red Cross is so dependable that it is easy to begin to take that worthy organization for p-antcd. Its help, and our accepiance of it, arc so automatic it is difficult to remember that the Red Cross can only respond in measure to the donations ·it receives. It is a non-profit ~ation depending on volunteers and donations to secure its life-blood. And ours too. In the past_. ~o weeks the Red Cross has emptied its warehouses and its bank accounts to serve Southern Calif omians. While we in the Harbor Arca escaped serious damage from this earthquake, there is no way of knowing how we will fare in the next day, week or· month. After all, we have for a close neighbor the Newport- Inglewood fa ult. While that slight flaw in the earth's crust hasn' given us cause to regret its proximity of late, it is a potential every resident of the Harbor Arca needs to keep in mind. And the truth is that the Red Cross might not be able to provide the kind of help we'd need if the earth shook tomorrow because its resources arc so sorely strained. Why, the~ if the Red Cross needs our help, have they not mounted an emergency fund-raising campaign? The answer is easy. The Red Cross receives some funding from the other mega-charity in Southern Californi~ The United Way. As part of the agreement between agencies, the Red Cross has agreed not to mount any appeals for funds during the last quarter of the year. But that prohibition doesn' mean that the Red Cross can' accept what is off ercd voluntarily. We can help the Red Cross. All it takes is a check, no matter bow small, from every citizen. Make it payable to the Red Cross Southern California Disaster Relief Fund. Address the envelope to Red Cross Earthquake Fund at P.O. He mixes humor and storytelling with music of the great composers. presenting a recital that is not only brilliant but also educa- tional. humorous and inspira- tional. Kochanski combines solid musicianship with subtle show- manship. and appeals to audien- ces of all ages. His programming is unconventional. It embraces a wide range of periods from baroque to modern. Kochans ki's concerts arc informal. He delivers verbal program notes as the concert progresses. and makes a point of inviting the audience up on stage during intermission to talk and ask questions. He firmly closes the gap between artist and audience. The Polish-born Kochanski is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music. He performed a private piano recital for Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1981. He also presented a public concert inside the Vatacan to an audience that numbered more than 10,000.
