Hugs could become educational dinosaur Sue Kauth I recently lead an article on . the legal implications of bugging or patting a student on the shoulder. The advice to educa- toN was to back off from any physical contact with the stu- dents for fear of possible accu- sations of molestation or inap- propriate behavior. Several teachers in Orange County have been accused recently of various forms of sexual abuse or molestation. Some of the teachers have insisted that they were only patting the student on the shoulder or giving a friendly non-sexual bug. To further compound matten, some female atudenta have alleged that male teacben have bad sexual liaisons with them. It is a frightening time to be in education, particularly in view of the emergence of a litigious society. Lawsuits are so common that we counselors had a special meeting just to review the ways we can get sued. It took two hours! The counselor, in fact, prob- ably runs an especially great risk of having nurturing behavior misconstrued. I, for one, am a hugger. I come from a .. buggy" family and have hugged and patted and arm-socked my way tluougb IS yean of teaching and counseling. I do not cue if it's a boy or girl that I am bugging. I do not cue if they are pre- pubescent or oozing with testos- terone. I just bug the kids that need a bug. As one counselor in the article pointed out. a coun- selor may be the only person that has ~~' bugged the child. I intend to continue those expres- sions of love and support. Here are some situations where a hug or shoulder pat was in order. · •The suicidal boy, Joey, stays alive and in school~ breaks away from bis gang activity, and receives bis diploma. Hug city! • A girl comes in and tells me that her mom bas pulled a knife on her the evening before. Fmt I bug, then I call child abuse (I can get sued for not calling, too!). As a matter of fact, the mother can then threaten to aue me if the allegation is unfounded. • A chronic truant tells me she has stayed in all her cl~ for a whole week~ even though it's been good beach weather. She gets at least a pat on the shoulder, maybe a sock in the arm. • School rebel, cbip-on-the- sbouJder male reports that bis new physical science teacher is .... otally cool" and that be bas made two A 'I on the last two quizzes. Sock on the (manly) shoulder. • A girl who bas gone to six high schools in the past four years report• that she 11 be moving again, and thanks me for the help. Mega-bug. • Asian f atber fmally agrees to go to counseling with his daughter, who is driving him nuts with punk dresses and alienated behavior. Hug the father. Pat the angry daughter's shoulder. Father then cries. As I think about these situa- tions, and bow they could be misconstrued, my heart aches for several people'. First of all, I f car for the little children who have tough home li~, and who may now be deprived of physical aff cctibn from eautious teachers. Also, J could weep for educaton who are already detached from the kids, and who will move even f urtber away after reading the legal implications of a touch. Particularly, I grieve for educa- tors like me, who have a lot of love to give, and may be getting paranoid about giving it. Do I worry about a lawsuit? Sure. I'm concerned. But as I told my princip~ I'm going to keep right on huggin1. And then I gave him a rib-crusher. He said he needed one. Without -a doubt the biggest event on the nation's list of events is the upcoming presidential election. It seems almost a pity that we can\ get to there from here without going through what has become the greatest show on earth. With election day a little over ten months down the road, the country has already begun to get a little numb from the lengthy, and extremely expensive, campaigning that has been going on since the day after the last batch of ballots was counted. Iowa will bold its caucus in three short weeks. Whole herds of Democratic candidates are marching through that state looking for a nod from the party faithful to fuel their campaigns, and campaign coffers, into New Hampshire. The Republicans are marching too, but their herd is a little smaller. After New Hampshire, the field will move on down south for Super Tuesday. No relation to the Super Bowl, but hyped by the media in about the same proportion, the great event will make or break political f ortuncs as over half the delegates to the national conventions are tallied in and locked down. The presidential circus costs a great deal of money in a nation which is looking at it's deficit in horror and haggling over where to make spending cuts. Matching funds are the name of the presidential political game. Tax-payers design~te that SI of their taxes to go pay for the campaigns of candidate8 who can prove they are viable by raising enough money to allow them to dip into the fund to pay bills for everything from political mailings to balloons to television time. Apparently American taxpayers are marking those little boxes and making money available to candidates in record numbers, since the bills for electing our president are reaching record levels. It seems to be a good system for raising money. Since it works so well, let's designate Sl, or even SIO, from every tax return to reduce the deficit. No matching funds are needed. just resolve. And maybe there's a presidential candidate out there who would like to designate his matching funds to the deficit cause. It seems to us a gesture that could speak louder than all the television time those dollars might have purchased. CdM beats · Sonora In · Coast Classic BY GEORGE PAPPAS Tbinp may be beginning to turn around for Corona del Mar Higb's cagers. CdM downed Los Alamitos, 61 -S 1 and Sonora, S0-33 in the first tow rounds of the Coast Christmas Classic this past week. The sea Kings will continue to play in the tournament this week. Cd M 's first game after the tournament is against Irvine High School on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Sea Kings(7-3) used defense to stop Los Alamitos. CdM's center Brain Spratt held Los Alamitos' big man 6-9 Dre Lamoureux to 12 points. "In the last two games we've played very well defensively." commented CdM Coach Paul Orris. "Defense and patient on offense have the two things I~ been emphasizing. H they were going to beat us it would have to be with somebody besides Brett Pagett or Dre Lamoureux, .. Orris said. Los Alamitos• Pagett was held to IS points by a combination of Marc Lucscbrink and Jeff Oark. Los Alamitos were ahead 16- 14 after one quarter but the Sea Kin~ led b) the shooting of junior Matt Cwiertnia went on 21-12 run. Cweirtnia scored 11 points in the the second quarter and led Sea King scoten with 19 points. CdM led 35-26 at the half. In the third quarter, CdM staved off a rally by Los Ala- mitos and led 48-3S going into the final period. Point guard Geoff Probst ( 12 points) directed CdM's offense, feeding passes and setting up shots in addition to play tough defense. Probst nailed five of seven free throw attempt late in the fourth period to seal the game. "This game was our first real four quarter game, "Orris stated. "We played good all four quar- ters. All season wc-VC played good ball with everybody but we always have one quarter where we would let down and take oursefves out of the game. In past games we got tentative in the third quarter but we bung tough this time," Orris said. Spratt also added 14 points and a strong rebounding effort. "With the start of league just around the corner, we need to start making the plays and rising to the occasion like we did tonight,~ Orris added. The Sea Kings started slowly against Sonora as they only hit 2 of 16 shots from the floor. The score was tied at nine after one quarter. But Cd M point guard Probst again ignited the Sea Kings as they went on a 21-8 run. Probst scored 11 points in the second quarter indudjng a three pointer as be had 14 points in the fint half. CdM took a 27-17 lead into halftime. Probst finished the game with 16 points The Sea Kings defense thwarted Sonora through much of the pme u they were forced into taking bad shots and turn- overs and were outplayed on the bouds. Spratt shut down Sono- ra 's big man 6-8 Geoff Crow to only six points. Spratt bad 14 points and Matt Herrington added 11 points. Spratt also grabbed nine rebounds. C.dM kept up the pressure in the second half as Spratt and Henington continued to score. Sonora's shootcn were cold until the fourth quarter when Gene Metzger bit two three pointcn but it was too little too late. C.dM led 39-21 after the third quarter as Sonora was held to four points. The Sea K.inp managed to keep the ball away from Sonora in the waning minutes of the game by passing the ball aDd waiting for the right shot. When Sonora fouled CdM to try to regain possession., Probst and Herrington hit a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach. •Rm law ...... aMClllt .. ailllflllll ...... "H we keep playing like this were going to end up in last place of the Sea View League again." commented Harbor Coach Jerry DcBust after the loss to Mc Ateer. •we were flat and we lacked intensity. I'm not happy with the way we arc playing. I'm dis- apointed with everything I saw on the floor," DeBusk con- tinued. Harbor continues to play in the Canyon Tournament this week. The Sailon trailed much of the game but each time they would inch within a couple of poinu their clefeme would break down and allow Mc Ateer to score. Mc Atccr also beat Har- bor Oil tbe ofl'emift boards U emuring them at leat two or three sboU QCb tiJne.. The Sailors were behind 20- J 8 at the half and the game remained close through the third period. Harbor's defensive play kept them in game for the fmt three quarters as they effectively wedged out Mc Atccr's center 6- 6 Tyrone Woods who only bad nine points. With 7: 14 left in the fourth period, Harbor took the lead JS- 34. But after that it was all Mc-- Atcer as they exploded for 22 points to Harbor's five in the final quarter. Tumoven and poor shooting sealed the Sailon • doom. Harbor guard Mike Nguyen led the Sailon with 12 points. But Harbor's offense wu gener- ally shut down with Jim Gcer- lings addiq five points, Drew Sheward, five points and center Tyler Koon, teven points and Mike Hardin, eight points. BY GEOaCJ: PAPPAS To aay that Newport Beach area hilh school teams had a successful yearm 1987 would be an undentatement. Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar Hip continued to field winning teams thU past year in spons that included football, water polo, basketball, volley- ball, tennis and cross country running. As an example, both school's football squads reached the CIF playoffs. CdM's team captured its first Sea View League crown since 1971 and CIF playoff bid since 1983, with a win over Harbor in the last game of the season. The Sea Kings easily downed Troy High School. 28-7, in the f mt round of CIF playoffs, but they stumbled apimt Valencia.. 16-7 in t)le next game. Quarter- back Mitch Melbon and running back Matt Patterson were CdM's offensive standouts dur- ing the season. but it was tough playing by the Sea King defense. led by Ray Cook, that was essential to Cd M 's winning season. Things seemed to be over for Harbor after their loss to Cd M, but they were given a playoff berth by virtue of their 7-3 season record. The Sailors proceeded to shock top ranked Sunny Hills. 31-2 & in their fmt round playoff game. In their second round game. the Sailors out played P.afica for the rant half before turno'Val and defensive break- downs shattered their title hopes as Hubor fell, 14-6. Rvnnina back Tom Walker, wbo wa voted tbe Sea View Leape'I 1DOlt valuable player, wu a key •pect to tbe Sailon' offensive, and be filled in after t~ Sailors' other top runner, Scott Mormcy. wu sidelined with an ankle injury. In voDeyball and water polo, CdM and Harbor._ teams met in the CIF finals. Rubor's girl't volleyball team easily took tbe Sea View Leque opponent Irvine High Schoo) could do no wrong as they beat Harbor, 3-2. Cd M and Harbor met in another showdown in the CIF water polo fmals. The Sailors began the season as a long-shot for reaching the CIF playoffs, let alone the finals. Harbor picked up steam near the end of the season, as they captured the Sea View League title by downing CdM. Harbor again beat the Sea Kings. 10-8, to take the CIF title. The Sailors were led by Chris Oeding who poured in seven goals during the game, and the strong dcf ensive playing of goalie Jim Wagner, with IO blocked shots. Both schools• cross country teams also fami well. Harbor's girl's squad took UM; Division II state championship after easily winning the Cl F title. The Sailors were led by runners Stacy Pando and Kim Robin- son. On the boy's team, Jim Geerlings finished in fourth place at the state meet. CdM's boy's team m issed taking the state championship as the Sea Kings finished in second place. Eddie Lavelle finished in sixth place to lead CdM. CdM's tennis team easily won the Sea View League title and reached as far as the semi-finals of the CIF playoffs before losing to LA Westlake, 12~. CdM•s basketball team is struggling to rqain its title as Sea View League champs. Last season the Sea Kings reached as far the semi-finals of the CJF playoffs. Unfortunately, this season the Sea Kings only have one starter from last year's team. guard Geoff Probst. Probst also happens to be the Sea Kings• leading scorer this season. The Sea Kings have a young team and the competition from the rest of the Sea View League. including Newport Harbor . could prove to great for them to take the league title again. TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS Harborlites up CHRISTA It GERRY LONG Once In A Lifetime $125,000 EXclusion One of our clients talked to his bank trust officers about selling his home. He was told that he would have $90,000 taxable income from the sale of his current residence. We checked it out with our tax accountant. and he pointed out that our clienf s trust officer had failed to take into con- sideration the cost of his replacement home. The amount of this sale also reduces the taxable profits from the saJe of the first home. As it turned out our seller had no taxable consequence from selling his home. If you are unsure of such matters, do not leave them to chance. Have a qualified accountant or attorney look into such financial or legal matters. Often sellers are reluctant to · spend two or three hundred dollars for a session with a specialist, only to end up making a decision which costs them tens of thousands of dollars.
