Gamet is a family of gems rather than a single gemstone and it comes in every ~or of the spec- trum except blue. Garnet's golden shades of sherry, cin- namon, and tangerine will warm the hearts of the receiver. Garnet is divided into eight species. A species of garnet is defined as a naturally occurrina inorganic substance that has a definite crystal structure with a given chemical composition. These varieties of garnet can be identified through gem-testing eQuipment. A garnet species or variety is defined by its density and how much light it refracts and absorbs. A number of these species are subdivided further into specific varieties. Some varieties of garnet you may not be familiar with are rhodolite, tsavorite and alman- dine. Rhodolite garnet is quickly becooling a favorite of the garnet family. Create a colorful ensem- ble by coupling winter whites with a violet to pinkish or pur- plish red rhodolite pendant. Or consider a pair of velvety green tsavorite earrings to accent rosy cheeks. The glowing golden pal- ette of almandine garnet best compliments the wools, tweeds and gabardines of winter fash- ions. Most garnets are readily avail· able !n fine qualities, so a wide seleciion is available at afforda- ble prices. Within the diversified family of garnet, there is some· thing for everyone. The project was postponed from mid-December due to rain. One third of the lot was restriped in July and another third in December, adding 72 new spaces. The south section of the lot in front of the terminal will be closed at 11 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, and work will be com- pleted and the lot reopened at 11 p .m. Sunday, Jan. IO. Abollt 350 parking spaces will be out of service during the restriping project, and travelers are advised to use the Long Term lot just north of the terminal or tbe North Lot across the free- way on Main Street between MacArthur and Redhill. Weekends are the least busy time at John Wayne Airport terminal, so the weeke11d is the preferred time to do the neces- sary work. "We hate to cause even more inconvenience at the airport than our too-small terminal already creates," said George Rebella, airport manager, "but by adding 127 new parking spa- ces we hope to provide some parking relief until our first new parking structure opens next year." Free shuttle bus service pro- vides transportation from both long-term lots to the termina.I entrance, with convenient pick- up every 15 minutes or less from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. Parking rates arc lower in these lots than the S 12 daily tariff in the Short-Term Lot. Long-Term Lot rates are $8 per day, and only $5 per day in the North Parking Facility. Both lo ts arc patrolled 24 hours a day by mobile units of Airport Security staff, and an attendant is on duty around the clock. The Short-Term lot currently has 1,066 spaces. The Long- Term lot has 1,377 spaces and 1,843 additional cars can park in the North Parking facility. A new interim parking lot with 879 spaces has recently been completed across Main Street from the North Main Parking Facility, and will provide alter- nate airport parking when the Long-Term Lot is closed Feb I to make way for the new termi- nal and parking structure. Construction of the new ter- mi.nal is scheduled to begin next spring, and it is scheduled to open by April 1, 1990. New parking structures to a~commo datc 8,400 vehicles are planned . and the first will be completed by Fall, 1988. The project i~ part of a $296 million improvement program now under way at the airport. funded by revenue bonds sold last summer. .General aviation improve- ments, including new tiedowm and taxiways for private air- craft on the airport's Westside. were dedicated in October. and planes in the north tiedown area beside the freeway have been moved there. Apparently, the kids had dic- tated their favorite recipes to the teacher. The result was a cook- book guaranteed to generate ideas for interesting meals dur- ing these chilly winter months. Herc arc a few of the more noteworthy concoctions: CHICKEN bJ Carrie Take a piece of food and put it in something. Put the chicken in the oven. It becomes larger and larger and cook for fifteen hours. Oops, I mean 17 hours. Yum! Note: The idea of a chicken expanding like an angel food cake is intriguing. The cooking time seems more reasonable. To a hungry c hild, a fragrant chicken's oven time could seem like 17 hours. SALAD bJ Erin The best thing in the whole world to cat is salad. And how you make it is you put I bag whole lettuce in it, but chop off the yucky part and the parts with bugs. And then put five carrots in and chop them with grand- ma's chopper. Chop them straight and round. Put 1000 Island dressing-3 whole gal- lons. Chop up onions round too. Note: Three gallons of another type of salad dressing could be substituted. We prefer three gallons of Italian. POT A TOES by Nicholas Put five whole potatoes in the oven and cook for 15 minutes. Set the oven on 80 degrees. When you put them in, wrap them in foil. Mash them with a forlc ; put chicken gravy on top. To make the gravy, you put chicken stuff and ski n in a•bowl with 58 gallons of sal .; and pepper. Note: Gravy has always been a bit of a mystery to me, as well. I remember in the play The Odd Co uple, Felix says, "You don't make the gravy; it jmt appean." What I want to know is, where do you buy the .. chicken stufM HOT DOGS by TJ Put bread on a hot dog and cook it for ten hours. Then put one salt on it. Blow on it one hour bcf orc you cat it. Note: Ty's folks have appar- ently been effective in teaching cook it on the stove for 2 minutes. Make the stove one hot, not two bot. Take .two noodles and put them in a pot. Then pour the sauce on the water and that's it. Note: This is probably meant for G.I. Joe's barracks. The above recipes take some expertise. One must read and Sue Kauth him safety procedures. The one grain of salt bespeaks a nice sense of restraint. This same minimalism can be observed in hip gourmet restaurants. SPAGHETTI by Robbie It's a little tiny bit hard to make. Take 100 carrots and a G.I. Joe knife and you chop, chop, chop. Then dump them into the recipe. Get 58 cans of tuna fish and mix it with the carrots. Then put it together and follow the directions rather caref uJly. Our final treat comes from a boy who would fit in well with my family. His needs arc simple: COLD CEREAL by JOMpll Malec it, like put the milk in a bowl, then put cornflakes in. Then get a spoon and put it in there and cat it. I hope some of these recipes will give you a boost during the after-holiday letdown. And if YMCA open house Want to get in shape for '88? Bob Badham to a group of supporters on Sunday and to the public on Monday that he will not seek reelection has, in one stroke, given a number of officeholders a chance to move up and breathed life into what had promised to be a lackluster election year locally. J Reports that Badham might not run began circulating before the holidays, but were hard to believe at first because of the high level of activity he had maintained since fending off Na than Rosenberg in a hard-fought primary in 1986. Ironically, he had been more actively in the public eye in these last 18 months than any other time since his first election to the House of Representatives in 1976. He was the county's point man in Washington DC on the off shore oil issue, he held a series of high-profile issues forums in the district, and was seen at numerous community meetings and events in the district that he had never or rarely attended in the past. All of this activity seemed to be building toward a rematch with Rosenberg, who only garnered 35 percent of the vote in 1986, but had been working hard to renew the challenge since then. Indeed, Rosenberg announced his candidacy on the same day Badham withdrew, although both men insisted that the timing was coincidence. , All of w.hich leaves the local political picture unclear, to say the least. ~our promipent elected officials have expressed ir..terest in becoming Badham's successor, and the entry of any of them will set off a similar electoral scramble at a lower level. What is clear is that the voters of the district now have a chance to send someone to Washington DC who represents the best the Republican Party has to offer. Badham was a lackluster legislator at best and, as we have said many times, a Republican bastion like the 40th District should be able to send someone to Congress who can shine. In that spirit, we'd like to urge Sen. Marian Bergeson to enter the race. Not only is she the senior Republican in the district in terms of length of public service and current office held, but she has shown remarkable leadership abilities at every level of public service in which she has been active, from the school board, through the Assembly, to the state Senate. We do not mean to devalue the abilities or credentials of the other active or potential candidates, but we have no doubt that Marian Bergeson is the best this district can offer. PllTI IY IUIY CITA BY GEORGI PAPPAS Through much of the season, Corona del Mar High's basketball team has been a three quarter team. The pattern of several of CdM's losses earlier this season consisted of the Sea Kings playing well for three periods before fading away in the final quarter. But if Cd M's playing in the Coast Christmas Classic is any indication, the Sea Kings arc begining to come together as a team. Sea Kings (8-4) improved play couldn't come at a better time with Cd M set to start of Sea View League action when they face Newport Harbor on Jan. 13. Cd M reached the finals of the Coast Christmas Classic, giving · Edison High School a scare before falling, 50-49, as time ran out on a Sea Kings' late game rally. The game could have been a chance for the Sea Kings to avenge an earlier loss to Edison in the Irvine World News Tour- nament last month but they came up short. CdM faces Woodbridge tom- morrow night at 7:30 p.m. in an away game. "'The kids never let down," ~ommented Corona del Mar Coach Paul Orris. "That's what we were doing in the tourna- ments earlier this season. They hung in there and arc begining to have confidence in themselves," Orris continued. "Our job and goal waa to get ready for league play and we've done that. Sure we've got a lot of things to improve on but there has been progress. I think we 'ye in pretty good shape for league," he added. Orris admitted Woodbridge is a good team but he added that the Sea Kings have a good chance of challenging them. "We have to take things one step at a time. Woodbridge is good team. If we play as well as we did in the Coast T ourna- ment than we could bleat them," Orris explained. The Sea Kings reached the finals with a combination of scrappy defensive play and a balanced offensive attack. Point guard Geoff Probst l"ati the Sea Kings offense through the tourney as he set up shots for others such as center Brian Spratt or forward Matt Herring- ton or relied on his own excellent outside shooting or ball ha.n- dling skills to drive in for a score. Spratt and Herrington pro- vidcd .• tlt~ lion share of CdM's rebounding wnile also becoming consistent scorers during the tourney. Probst and Spratt were both named to the Coast Christmas Classic-all-tournament team. "As long as everyone is involved-in our offense then our opponents can't shut down one guy. If one of the guys is having aq off night than somebody else can come in and do it. We're finally starting to play like that," Orris said. Going into the fourth quarter against Edison the score was tied at 32. The Sea Kings 'fell behind as Edison scored six straight points as Mike Foster, who was shut out for three quarters, hit two baskets. CdM came back to cut the 1'Jld to, 42-41, on a three pointer with 2:26 left. Edison's Alvin Loftis, who also dido 't score through three quarters, stole the ball and layed in a shot to make the score, 48- 43 but the Sea Kings responded with another three pointer as they trailed by two points with 22 seconds left. Edison attempted to run out the clock, but Loftis was fouled with seven seconds left. Loftis sank both free throw shots as Edison led S0-46. The Sea Kings quickly worked the ball down court where Her- rington threw up a desperation three-point shot which swished through. CdM called time out but the final second ticked off and the buuer sounded. The officials discus~d putting the second back, but in the end they decided against it and Edison was declared the winner. "The head referee was facing the clock and when we called time out he read it as double zero," Orris stated "Seems like those seven seconds went by awful fast, but I guess they know what they're doing." Edison took a 24-22 lead into half time. Chip Hanlon, who along with Mike Hunter led Edison scorers with IS points each, sank all of his points in the first half but was shut out in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Edison made six turnovers but Cd M couldn't capitalize as the score was tied at the end of the period. Student life IY UTIEmlE IEl.lll Vacation iS over an·d . . a busy January looms BY CHERYL STEHLING It isn't every day that buyers in the market for a prime island home can find such a bargain as this week's featured home at 77 Linda Isle. This home boasts 4,800 square feet of luxury, with 5 bedrooms and tbrec-and-onc- half baths. "This is a fantastic buy, with quality throughout," said Bob Trown of Waterfront Homa, who is offering the home. "It is a great location with such amen- ities as community tennis, pri- vate beaches, a protected lagoon, southern exposure so the patio gets sunshine all day long and an extra wide slip for a boat." Linda Isle living assures pres- tige, and residents arc protected by a guarded gate. TUDOR-STYLE ARCHITECTURE AND STAINED LEADED GLASS The home has been com- pletely remodeled and upgraded into a showcase of elqance. Soaring ceilings and collector stained and leaded glass win- dows are found throughout the interior. The front exterior of the home is a fieldstone, with a brick driveway. The Tudor style of the home is evident at once, with stained glass visible from the outside. But that is just the beginning. "When people walk into this house, they say, 'Wow'," Trown said. Guests enter into. a two-story entry ball, with antique wood beams. The double doors have stained glass, and a lar1e chandelier hangs dramatically through the beams. The walls are textured, completing the ambience of this home. To the right of the entry hall is a ~room with private bath and entry that can be used as a maid's quarters or mother-in- law suite. The entry hall extends past a guest powder room, a side patio with a koi pond, the large family room to an immense living room. Guests can stand at the front door and sec the length of the home down to the specta- cular view of the bay from the living room French doors. The guest powder room is on the right, with leaded stained glass windows and a hand- painted basin with brass fix- ture$. - The side patio is luxurious, and greenery and flowers abound around the dramatic koi ponr.furrent owners have spectacular and colorful fish who are tame enough to allow petting. This patio is a serene and peaceful retreat acceuible through the French doors off the entry hall. Through double doors to the left of the entry ball ii the family room, large enough for enter- tainina on a grand scale. There is room enough for a big-· screened television, billiard table 4'lld piano. The antique 1tt.iocd leaded glus is used abundantly in this room. The f areplace is of fieldstone, and the noon arc doweled wood. Li&ht is provided by a 'series of downliahtJ in the ceiling. Guests walk from the family room to the elaborate kitchen, complete with commercial appliances. These days, cousin Felicitas is visiting from Berlin. Christa and Felicitas were close. childhood friends, growing up together in Berlin during and after World War II. Like all visitors, Felicitas is taken on tours of Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and sur- rounding areas, and proudly shown our beautiful towns, harbor, beaches and magnificent homes. Like our visifon before her, she is immensely impressed with the climate, the stunning scenery, the charm and friend- liness of the people she meets and, of course, the impressive residences she is shown. On New Year's Eve we had to take care of some last minute real estate busineu in our office in Newport Cen~r. We depos- ited Felicitas in Atrium Court and agreed to meet her in a couple of hours. When we picked her up she was 1ippin1 a cup of coffee near the fountain and marvelling at the scene around her. "What do you think? How did it impress you?" we asked. "I'm surprised that you Americans don't all have stomach ulcers," she said, "the way you rush with your food from counter to table, wolf down half of it, throw the other half in the trash and rush off. . rm exhausted just watching. tt She says that in Germany, eating is a ceremony. It is taken leis- urely, with friendly, quiet con- venations. A time· to think and relax. And to throw away half the salad on your plate is i.m- acceptable. Ctlllnu 1 • • 11111 71 Happy New Year! .. Their only son, 24, studies for his doctorate at the Univenity in Berlin. For twice-yearly vacations, they travel to Greece, Italy and Sicily, Bavaria or Switzerland. They reside in a three bed- room "Neubau" apartment. "Neubau" means built after the "ar. The S-story, up-scale apart- ment house in an upper middle clau neighborhood of Berlin, has central heating and an elevator. Garages are not pro- vided for the tenants even though moat, like Felicitas and her husband, are a two-car f am iii es. ~!rking is an extraordinary problem for most, since Berti~ like many Euro- pean cities, developed at a time when no one had even heard of . can. She tells of one neighbor acrou the street who has a penchant for large American can. wrbey are cheap in Berlin, because they guzzle gas and they are bard to park," she says. This neighbor one day found a park- ina place smack in front of bis apartment house. He was so thrilled at having found it that be 1ot out his bicycle and, for three days, used it to go to work so be could keep bis prized partin1 spot. The apartment house has a laundry room in the basement with coin-operated washing machines for the tenants. Cur- iously, no dryers. Eventually, all tbe tenants bought their own wuhin1 machines and installed them in their apartment, usually in tbe bathroom. Felicitas says it wa poaiblc to do so only by removing the wash basin and finding a mini-basin to replace it, so as to provide the space t o fit in the washer. "No dryeis?" we asked. No, s~ replies. While she can well affbrd one, where would she put it? In the living room? So, even in the winter, the laundry is bung to dry on a line on the balcony. Our homes, and especially our back yards, she perceives as incredibly spacious and luxur- ious. Our everyday living arran- gements and logistics appear fabulously practical to her. l "We are always several years behind you in these matters," she comments. "But I am sorry that things are so hard in America." What does she mean? Isn't she impressed with Newport Beach, · with our real estate business, with our J!YJ~ of living? Of course she is. "But you work so hard," she says, "you don 'l take time to actually SIT in your backyard, to smell the roses, to listen to the birds sing. You don 'l enjoy leisurely lunches with your friends, you d on't take a 'Feierabcnd' at S p.m. .. Also," she continues sadly, "I saw an old woman sleeping on the cold street in San Francisco, on elegant Montgomery Street. And nobody stopped to help."
