Kidnap of young boy spurs warning BY BILL HARVEY An 11-ycar-old Santa Ana Heights boy reported that he was kidnlpped from a restroom at Mariners School by a male Hispanic with a kn if c and taken to the area of University Drive and Irvine Avenue, according to Bob Oakley of the Newport Beach police. "The boy said he was then taken into a large drainage pipe where he was forced to lie down. He said his abductor then fled," Oakley said. The fifth-grader had been excused from class to go to the boy's raom, and when he failed to return, the teacher dispatched another student to find him. When it was learned that he was apparently not on the school grounds, school officials called the boy's mother to tell her that he might be on his way home. Oakley said the mother went looking for her son and found him walking along University Drive near Irvine. "She said he was crying when she found him," said Oakley. The mother and her son went back to the school grounds where they notified police of the boy's abduction. Oakley said the boy described the vehicle in which he was taken to University and Irvine as a dark-colored van with seats and windows. Newport Beach police are investigating, and school officials have asked parents to discuss with their children what to do when approached by adult strangers. Just when you think you have everything nailed down -surprise! - it all slips away. Just ask county Republican Chairman Tom Fuentes. A short two months ago, the local political scene seemed etched in stone. Longtime Republican incumbents held every state and national office, and even the city councils in the area seemed to be set for the forseeable future (though they aren't all Republicans). Well, the bombshells have been dropping pretty thick and fast the last two months, and Fuentes probably qualifies for combat pay by now. First of all , Rep. Bob Badham decided that discretion would be better than a messy rematch with Nathan Rosenberg, even though Badham figured to win again, and announced this is his last term. The vacuum was immediately filled with about a zillion candidates, led by Rosenberg and Irvine Councilman Dave Baker, several of whom can pull in some big money that might in other years have gone to Republicans in more marginal districts. Then, in the adjacent 42nd Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Dan Lungren got appointed to limbo by the governor and Legislature and, incredibly, decided to stay there rather than seek reelection to the House. Another scramble is now underway. And just last Friday, Newport Beach City Council- woman Evelyn Hart fired the shot heard 'round Republican world, announcing she will run against Rep. Gil Ferguson in the primary. Meanwhile, the Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach council races all heated up with the retirements of incumbents -Dave Wheeler, Ray Catalano and Phil Maurer, respectively. What this all adds up to is a very interesting election year for those of us who report on these events, a completely confusing election year for those who vote, and an unexpectedly busy election year for Tom Fuentes. In our opinion, though, this is as it should be. When incumbent officeholders are not seriously tested, when new ideas and fresh faces are not given the opportunity to blossom, the quality of representative democracy suffers. We urge the citizens of the area to take an active interest this year in the election process. Register to vote, certainly, but also get out and see the candidates, maybe even work actively for one. The Philharmonic and the new opera company are bued at the Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, named for the major donor and auidina light of the Music Center for many yean, 1!f ho is of the family that controls the 1imes. The L.A. Music Center and the Philharmonic existed in Los Anaeles for many yean without any serious attempts to create a resident opera company in the city. In a word, fixed income secur- ities are predictable. It will be the first such office outside of Washing- ton D.C. Cranston said the Newport Beach office will begin with a six-month budget of $436,000. TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS PROTECTING THE SELLER Initially the buyer was offended that, as brokers, we insisted that his loan application require his loan to be at .. best available rate" rather than 10.5% maximum. Since, however, he was still negotiating on the sale of his home in Hawaii, he thought it would be good for him to include the same phraseology in that contract. (The 10.5% maximum allows the buyer to cancel the transaction if the rates jump above that fisure during escrow.) Rates did jump during his escrow. His buyer in Hawaii did try to back out of the transaction, but could not because the contract read "best availa- ble rate." As a result, he was able to buy his Newport Beach home without losing the sale of his Hawaii home. In the meantime (12 months) his Newport Beach home has increased in value by about $120,000. Instead, they'll spread the bad word about the product or the company to their friends and co- worken, and not let the com- pany know where it's having problems. Most reputable firms-be it a financial institution or your local supermarket-depend on repeat business and customer referrals for a large share of their business. They want to know if their products have been found faulty or if employees dealt ·rudely or ineptly with customen. The story is set in twelfth century France and is about a family squabble of the worst kind. King Henry II of England has reached the ripe old age of SO and has to name an heir to the throne. Which of his three 'sons will it be? Volatile Richard, intellectual Geoffrey or adolescent John? To complicate matters Henry's wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, does not stand behind his decision. Henry would like to name John to the throne, but John is young and clumsy. Eleanor would like to have Richard the Lionhearted take over because he is her favorite. He would obviously be the best for the job and he knows it. In the middle of it all is poor, neglected Geoffrey, who announces, "What about Geoff? Doesn't anyone care what he has to say?" Fanning the domestic fires is Alais, sister of Philip of France, who was raised by Henry and ·Eleanor. The play opens in Henry's chamber where we are first introduced to Alais and Henry and we learn that they have had little more than an adopted-daughter father relationship since she was 16. All of the action takes place in the castle at Chinon, France. It is Christmas time and a court is to take place between Henry and Philip of France. After the audience is introduced to all of the characters, the play is off and quickly running from one hilar- ious sequence to the next. There arc six scenes in act o ne and three in act two, set in different rooms of the castle. The brilliant set design by Waner 8. Huntoon incorporates the authentic ambience of a twelfth-<:entury castle and allows for vcrsatiJe set changes. recognized themes from ... Love Lucy," .. My Three Sons" and .. Leave it to Beaver ... The play is strictly a fictional account of historical occ·urrences and might send some in the audience scurrying to their encyclopedias to check on the facts, but author James Goldman has written a master- piece and the characters in the play allude correctly to historical data. Henry is played by veteran actor Douglas Rowe, who has produced, acted in or directed more than 80 Playhouse produc- tions. His seasoned ability shows well in his very credible Henry. Patricia Collins is. a perfect Eleanor, who i alway one up on her husband . The two constantly bicker a nd she always has the last word . When Henry says, "41 should have killed you long ago," she counters with. .. There's nobody pecking. do it now." J ohn is played by Steven Shults, who appeared in three Laguna Beac h High School productions. Timothy Constant played Geoffrey, Jeffrey 8 . Schlichter played Richard and IC.en Perkins played Philip of France. All three have worked on the stage of the Playhouse before. Alais was played by Debbie Grattan, who makes her debut on the Playhouse stage. but has worked in various plays elsewhere. All actors work very well in developing their charac- ters. Her father was the president of a large company; her sister currently is, and her brother is a geologist with his own com- pany. Polovina has been married to husband, John. for 14 years. He owns his own medical supply company. Before they were married, John played baseball for the St. Louis CardinaJs. but an injury to his pitching arm put an end to his career.
