Narrowly escaping the El Salvadoran death squads headed by his father in 1981, Velasquez sought refuge in the United States and has since been disowned by his family. At 35, he has few friends in his native country as he is the only living member of his graduating class. Velasquez bas quietly accepted his own fate but has refused to give up hope for his country. "Entire villages have disappeared and more than 60,000 people have been kidnapped, tortured or killed and I cannot tum my back on them,~ Velas- quez said. Since he began Medical Aid for El Salvador in J 982, the largely volunteer organization has delivered over $3 million in artifacial limbs, medications, medical supplies and paramedic train- ing to the people of the small Central American country. In August, Velasquez'group wiil again travel to El Salvador thanks to the generosity of a Newport Beach woman and local dignataries who donated to the cause last week. A small fundraiser hosted by Molly Lyon raised more than $2, 100 for an artificial leg for 17-year-old Augustin Ramos, who lost his own limb when it was severly burned. The plan now goes to the Coastal Commissio n at a meeting today in Marina del Rey. Councilwoman Rutbelyn Plummer, whose district includes the area of the project, was empowered by the council to speak for the city at tbe meetina. In other actfo~ the council voted 7- 0 as part of the consent calendar to remove the merge lane on PCH at the Marguerite intenec~n . Getting taste of college life BY KATHERINE NELSON The beach, the beat, the crowds. In other words, summer, and it's arriving faster than we realize. Even though local high school students are looking forward to their "release" on June 23, summer vacation bas been known to become a little boring after the fmt couple of lazy weeks are over. The way to add some spice to vacation time is to attend a special interest summer pro- gram. These give students an opportunity to try out an "elec- tive" that they may not have bad time fo during the regular school year. Tbe list of opportunities is endleu. For example, the Pep- sus program at UCI offen mot- ivated, colleae-bound students the Summer Scholan program, June 27 to August 3. The student can live on campus (optional) and earn valuable colJeae credits in only six weeks in a compet- itive univenity environment. Pegasus has other programs for students, includina the Academy of Arts, a dynamic comprehen- sive training program of theater arts, music, dance and art. University of California's other campuses also have pro- grams geared for the college- Featuring artist Tisha Whitney bound student. Since these are residential programs, they offer high scboolen a chance to "try- out.. college life.· Academic summer l?rograms are also avail- able at many of the eastern Ivy League and prep schools such as Andover, Harvard, Brown, Bos- ST CID ENT UFE ton College, Tufts, and Skid- more. The Occidental College Ocea- nolou summer program is built for students that are interested in marine ICience· as a career. It incorporates bands-on expe- rience with both classroom and lab time. For those students interested in ·experiencing life at college campuses on both coasts there is the Pepperdine Enrichment Focus program which bas coor- dinated with Endicott College in Mauacbuaetts. Students spend three weeks at the Malibu cam- pus and then fly back for three weeks in the East. Two other well-established leadership programs for teen- agers are PAGE and FOCUS. For one week, youna adults can concentrate on goal setting, communications, and . building self-esteem. What an eleaion should be is a cbancc to publicly air the important issues of the day and to present solid credentials in a positive manner so that the voten can mate an informed choice on election day. Unfortunately, the campaign in the 40th Congrasional District Republican primary has been loaded so far with way too much of what an elect.ion shouldn't be and too little of what it abould be. Fortunately, most of what is good about the campaip - thoughtful ideas about c~t issues, fine credentials for public service, a willingness to work with local offaci.als and build coalitions and consensus -bas emanated from one candidate, Councilman Dave Baker of Irvine. Thus, the choice on June 7 should be an easy one for the voters. _ Dave Baker has a record of service and experience that the other candidates just cannot match. Not only that, but the experience was gained locally, working with the local community and elected officials on Joca.J solutions for loca.J problems. Throughout bis career, be bas shown an ability to work bard and to develop a consensus around compassionate Republican solutions to today's problems. In 1982, be founded and chaired People for an Irvine Community Hospital, which successfully fought for a mucb-accded new facility in the area. In 1986-87, be worked to create a model, privately- funded, non-profit child care program in Irvine which by 1992 will provide daycare to every child in the city that needs it, at no co.a to the cupayen. He sponsored a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program which is now being adopted by cities throughout the county. Be played a lcadenhip role in developing a plan that preserved more than 8,000 acres of open space in Irvine. In four years on the Irvine counciL Dave Baker has never voted for a tax increase. He will not do so in Congress, either. He is also well versed on national issues. He supports a strong defense and de-ling with the Soviets from a position of strength, and is an favor of the Strategic Defense Initiative. He bas spoken often about the need to eliminate the current trade deficit, about stiffer penalties for drug dealen and penalizing foreign countri~ who abet the drug trade, and about the need to restore voluntary prayer to the public schools. He was the only candidate in the district to testify against oil drilling off the Oranae County coast before Interior ~ Donald Hodel. His record of bard work and creative approaches bu earned ham the support of literally douns of other elcctcd officials in the district, including Sen. PllTI IY IAIY IBll•CI BY GEORGE PAPPAS All season long Corona del Mar's baseball team has been waiting to cut loose. The Sea Kings• chance came this past week as they opened the floodgates on crosstown rivals Newport Harbor for 21 runs in two games. A hitting slump bas been behind CdM's struggles this season. But they showed little signs of a slump in the two recent wins against Harbor. "We finally got some good pitching and hitting both at the same time," remarked Corona del Mar Coach Jerry Jelnick. .. Hitting is contagious. One guy starts hitting then everybody starts hitting. It really takes the pressure off our pitchers and they start performing better." CdM (5-8) takes a three-game winning streak into their final two contests against first-place Saddleback. The two meet today at 3: 15 p.m. on Cd M's diamond. "Saddlcback scored 16 and eight runs off of us the first time, so we have our work cut out for us," Jclnick added. "But now is a good time for us to play Saddlcbact when we're playing well." The playoffs can basically be ruled out for the Sea Kings. They are in rafth place, two games behind Estancia and one game in back ofUnivenity. Harbor (1-12) can't seem to shake the losing habit as they dropped their tenth straight game. The Sailors end their year against Tustin at 3: l S p.m. today in a home game. In last Friday's game, the Sea Kings didn't waste any time as they batted around for I 0 runs in the bottom half of the first mnmg. Rieb Mather pitched five scoreless innings as he picked up his second straight win for the Sea Kings. CdM's Mitch Melbon led off the first frame with a single. Kevin Maas then reached base with a walk and Kurt Ehmann singled to fill the bases. Chad Thompson then sent a shot over the right-center field f encc for a grand slam. Harbor's pitcher, Kirk Summers, never seemed to re- cover after that. Cd M wasn't through as Greg Haack singled and stole second. Gary Sussman banged a grounder to Harbor shortstop Tony Wren, who threw the ball to third base in an attempt to put out Haack, but the Sailors came up short. On the next play, Haack scored on a grounder to first base. Jeff Clark folJowed with a single to bring in Sussman as CdM led 6-0. Maas doubled down the left field line to bring in another run. Summen left the game and Jim Jennings was brought in to pitch. With runners on second and third base, Brian Jones smashed a bouncer to Wren, who couldn't get a handle on the ball for an error, as anoth~r run scored. Thompson and Haack added two more base hits to bring home two more. In the third inning, Harbor showed signs of life. They loaded the bases on a single and two walks. But Mathers ·stifled the Sailors' rally as he fanned Summers to end the inning. Harbor blew another oppor- tunity in the next inning. The Sailors loaded the bases again, but they faltered as Gavin Whitis hit a sharp grounder to second base and barely missed beating out the throw. In fifth inning, CdM pushed across another run. H aack singled and went to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Sussman reached base after he nailed a line shot off the Jennings' arm. Haack raced home to give CdM a 11-0 lead. The Sailors ruined the Sea Kings' chances at a shut out in the sixth inning. John MacMillan walked, and the neltt two batten were hit by pitches. CdM's reliever Clay Carpenter then walked in a run before be forced Wren to poke a harmless pop fly to first base. The Sailors went down in order in the final inning. Haack finished 3 for 3 with two runs and one RBI. Maas went 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI. CdM swimming team dominates finals The Sea Kings' swimming program left crosstown rivals Newport Harbor and the rest of the Sea View League once again gas ping for breath as they clinched the league title this past week. Both CdM's boys and girls teams swam to league titles at Newport Harbor High last Fri- d ay. CdM will part1c1pate in the CIF prelims today at 6 p.m. in the Belmont Plaza pool in Long BeacA. As in the meet against New- port two weeks ago, John Thom- asson and Chris Ocding were again the dominate forces on the Sea Kings' boys team in league finals. Thomasson, who is defending Cl F champion in the SO and l 00 f rcestyle events, took both races at the meet. Oeding finished fant in the 200 and SOO frecatyle events. Andy Olson allo performed well u he took the 209 ioclividual medley and came in third in the I 00 bacbtroke event. Distance runners J im Rob- bins and Eddie Lavelle turned in strong performances to help lead the Sea Kings' boys squad to the titl . CdM's girls team also cap- tured the league championship. The girls' team was led by the s tando ut performa nces of runners d •Layne Kerr and Leslie Cashion. Both squads qualified for CIF 3A Division prelims to be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Arcadia High School. CdM also won the 1600 meter relay race with Robbins rulllling the crucial anchor leg of the event. In the high jump, Cd M's Greg Skoro captured the league championship in the event with a leap of 6-1. With the jump, Skoro shattered his personal best of 5-8 as he beat returning league champio.n Harbor's R. W. "Cats" was the brainchild of British playwright Andrew Lloyd Webber, who bad fond childhood memories of his mother reading T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." The unforgettable stage production explores the antics of a motley group of junkyard cats, who cavort and sing, sometimes with members of the audience. The touring production played in Long &each last summer and is one of three groups performing across the country. The original daule of the design bas been kept intact, as the felines frolic through an enormous junk pile. Standout performances were turned in by Bradford Minkoff as Rum Tum Tugger, Jeffrey Clonts as Growltiger and Lind- say Dyett as Griddlebone. Growltiger and Griddlcbone reminisce in a rousing duet about younger days. Most notable was Donna Lee Manhall's Grizabella, the Glam- our Cat, who stopped hearts with her rendition of "Memo- ries." No opening night glitches were present, if one doesn't count the microphone problems in the beginning, which were promptly repaired. The wonhip service hiahligbted the needt of thote women who are suffering the pain and alienation of being incan:erated. Nancy Ross, who chaired the program, noted in opening remarks that "there are more and more women going to prison and their crimes are often exe- cuted while trying to support their children, or they may have misguided loyalty to the wrong man. Because of equal rights, judges arc not lenient and the women arc separated from their children. This is often a time when they turn to God." She then introduced the key- note speaker, Sister Cathy Vall- ejo of the Catholic Detention Ministry, who told of her work with wo men prisoners and affirmed Ross' comments. One of the things Sister Cathy noted was that women often visit male re latives or loved ones in prison, but few men visit women in prison. She also pointed out that 90 percent of the women return to society; and that most are mothers and their children also suffer during their incarcer- ation. She invited the group at St. Andrew's to come to any one of the 11 institutions that ma.kc up Orange County's jail system. "Come and sec," she urged. "It is important for the women prisoners to connect their lives with those who arc outside. I have been asked bow I bring God there, but it ia I who fmdt God amoaa tbCle prilonera." Si.lier Cathy explained that the women's priaon population has tripled in the lut 10 years. Most of the crima they commit are aaainat property, she said. They mostly fall into the 24-to- 3S aae aroup and most have suffen:d physical abuse. "Women in prison are not accepted while there and they arc ' INSIGHTS not accepted when they leave," Sister Cathy stated. "They lose more and more identity. depend- ing on the amount of security they require -minimum, medium, or maximum. In any case, they are dealt with as a group, not on an individual basis." ' She said that the cost to house an inmate runs between $20,000 and $50,000 per year, but only about 5 percent of that is spent on rehabilitation and education. "They need to learn how to become part of a community;• she said. "Women arc not given practical training for trades. In fact, I have discovered while doing some research that a woman was given popsicle sticks to make a house, as something to do!" "What happens to their chil- dren," she continued, "is the kids become the caretakers in f am- ilies and lose their own child- Mormons stage 'Bye Bye Birdie' "Bye Bye Birdie" will be presented on May 13 and 14 at the auditorium of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) at 16th Street and Dover Drive in Newport Beach. Barbara bu ju1t become the primo Aafenea Alltel by diatinpisb-iaa the 1ehool and the Roy 0. Andenen PT A as a finalist in the National PTA Phoebe Appenon Hearst Outstanclina Educator Award competition. Barbara received an Honorable Mention, SSOO, and a nifty plaque by placing among the top Beyond the Basics five best teachers for the entire nation, out of more than 800 nominees. This is the second year that the Andersen PT A Awards Committee has chosen to submit Barbara's name, and it is par- ticularly timely, not only for Andersen, but for the Newport- Mesa School District. Barbara. whose specialty is developmen- tal kindergarten, has devoted much of the past year to beading up the district's Kindergarten Task Force in preparation for the combination of Harbor View and Andersen kindergartens at the Eastbluff site next fall. Much of the curriculum, spatial use and philosophy of the program bu taken shape under Barbara's pidance. She is the expert. She i1 one of the district's first mntor teacben; she lectures, pides and lends her expertise to Odlier districu; and she presents ~nan in other states. She is tk author of two boots, Frtt To Be Four YearJ Old and Frtt . To Be Flw Yeor.r Old. wbicll ue uaed by early childhood edaca- ton in at least a dozen other states, and teveral days aao the received an order for her boob from the Rona ~ona lnterna-• tional School. Recently, abe presented a worbbop in Salt Late City, which wu ao weU- received that a school diatrict in Wyoming arranpd for an bour- and-a-half conference call work- shop with Barbara. Her phone line wu booked up to a Wyom- ing schoolroom full of kinder- garten and first grade teacbcn and to another line, on which a University of Wyoming pro- fessor sat in to partake of Barbau:a •s expertise. "She is one of the most crea- tive and talented teacben rve had the pleasure to work with,"' said Bruce Crockard, Andersen School principal. "How nice it is to have someone of her status for our new kindergarten pro- gram. We 're extremely proud of her. She is most deserving." I echo those words. I've known Barbara well for seven of the 11 years she's taught at Andersen. My own daughter was fortunate to have her for her first public school experience. Her philosophy of "readiness," of giving the fledgling students the .. gift of time" to explore their own potential, of concentrating on their social and motor skills, and of accepting their different levels of development bu been responsible for hundreds of confident children who "feel good about themselves." Her creative approach to teaching them the mechanics of real life situations is defmitely a forte. Every year she sets up a mock post office with each child •s name and address on an indi- vidual post box. Children play the roles of mail sorter, postal clerk and delivery person, using actual pieces of mail, learning the real function of the postal system by perf onning it tbem-selv~. In addition, there is a spacious terraced lawn facing the bay and a luxurious patio arc~ with enough space to accommodate a pool and spa. There arc 12 doors in the home, which open onto the bayside. The home was designed and built in 1971 for the current owner. Rich teak wood is used throughout, on the doors, cup- boards and closets, bannisters, bult-io shelves and on some walls. Brashier & Co. presents a 'classic' brokerage BY CHERYL STERLING Marcia Brubier is an inde- pendent broker who believes there is always a niche in the marketplace for people like her, who combine the elements of education, professional exper- tise and communication skills. 041t's not important to have a big name attached," Brashier said. 04lt is the agent who really counts." Brashier recently opened a new office in the Fidelity Federal Building on Bayside Drive and is excited to receive her clients there at a reception on May 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The office was the former leasing office for the building, so with new carpet and fresh paint on the doors, Brashier was able to move in on April 15. Brashier originally worked out of her Corona del Mar home, before moving to San Francisco with her family. She said her skills were finely honed when she worked for Grubb and CARMEL MODEL IN HARBOR VIEW HOMES Immaculate, and the perfect location on the greenbelt. Three bedrooms and 2 baths. $409,000 Elli.a in a city that bu more competition than Orange County. She credits her hus- band, Jim, for turning her inter- ests toward real estate. "My background is the arts," Brashier said. "I have a masters in painting and I have taught at the university level." But Jim was working as a commercial broker, with much success, so she decided to join the ranks. She got her real estate license in 1982 and broker's license in 1984. She worked with such important clients as Avco Financial Services and Ray Chem, by helping to place them in their current locations. When she became a commercial agent, not many other women had ventured into the field . "Residential real estate was something women could get into easily," Brashier said. "It was an extension of their domestic activities. Unfortunately, resi- dential real estate has not enjoyed the best of images in the HARBOR VIEW HILLS C-Plan in the Broadmoor Section of Harbor View Hills. Brashier decided to aet into commercial real estate for the challenge it presented. One of the challenges was being a woman in a field mostly dom- inated by men. Another chal- lenge was being independent, without a big, corporate name to back her up. "I had to ask myself what I could do to set myself apart from the other, .. she said ... The answer is that I can give my clients the kind of service they need and they won't get lost in the flurry of a big corporation, which bas become a real estate meat market." In San Francisco, she worked with Rubloff and her husband became an officer at Cushman and Wakefield. Because she didn't want to be in competition with her husband , she turned towards residential real estate. . "What better place to dive into residential than San Francisco? It was hard, but the rewards were terrific," Brashier said. "We deal with historical property there and clients get more bang for their bucks." Brashier and her family returned from San Francisco in January, and she doesn't want it to sound like she is homesick for the city by the Bay. "It's much more stressful there," she said. 04Here seems like nirvana. We take so many things for granted here, like parking. Up there, it is bard to find a parking place even if you just want to ru~ into the dry clean- en." The family settled back in Corona del Mar, in Jasmine Creek. Brashier said the town with its neighborhood feeling reminds her a lot of San Fran- ClSCO. The Brashien have a l 5-year- old son, Seth, who she said is the light of her llf e, in addition to two 04fabulous" step sons, Craig and Scott. Craig is a commercial broker and Scott is a student. For fun, the Brashiers enjoy the simple pleasure or life, like playina tennis, donnina war- mups and just takina leisurely strolll around Corona del Mar, and entertainina. They like to travel and on their lut vacation took Seth with them for a 10- day visit to Tahiti. .. That was the best vacation we ever had," Brashier said. 64We enjoy spending quality time with our sons. It's the simple plea- sures that are rewarding." Brashier and Co. I I All about escrows,· Part II BY GERRY AND CHRISTA LONG When is an escrow open? While legal definitions may vary, most sources agree that an escrow is open and in effect when all parties have placed signed escrow instruqiom into escrow, and when a money deposit bas been made into the escrow trust account. This deposit of money is usually from the buyer. It is often ref erred to as a "serious money deposit." Usually it ap- plies to the purchase price of the property which the buyer is purchuing. When is an escrow closed? When the Grant Deed has been recorded at the county recorder's office, and when all fun~s and documents have been distrib- uted to their proper recipients. The Grant Deed is the instru- ment which conveys the title to the property from the Seller to the Buyer. What if an escrow "falls apartr' Escrows commonly take from five to nine weeks. Some- times they may be shorter, especially if it involved an all- cub transaction. Occuionally, escrows may be longer than three months. During this escrow period, frictions Diay arise between the parties. ~aybe the buyer bu second thoupts about the "true" value o( the property he is buying; worse yet, he may have seen a home he likes even better. On the other band, the seller ii wonderiq whether he "under- solcl"' his home, or maybe be hu decided be really doesn't want to part with it after all! Other times, the lender may fail to qualify the buyer or the property for the desired loan. Occasion- ally, we find that an unhappy seller or buyer decides: "l'IB aolnl to cancel tlak acrowt" Well, It's not u limple u dlat. An escrow II a bilateral coatract. A unilateral decision cannot alter It without the eomeat of tile odlel' party (or parties) to the escrow. What happens to the "serious money deposit?" H the escrow is, indeed, mutually cancelled (in ~ting), is the deposit "auto- matically" returned to one of the parties? Typically, we are talking about a sum ofSS,000 or $10,000 or more. Here again, the parties must agree as to the disposition of the funds. Sometimes the terms of the contract provide that, under certain circumstan- ces, the money be returned in full to the buyer. In other cases, the seller may lay claim to the funds in escrow. If the parties can't a1ree, le1al counsel may be soupt. Occasionally, the dep- osit will remain "tied up" in escrow for many months. cpete CBa111tett cp1tegentg. . .
