After all, the Fourth of July weekend came and went without conflagration (unless you count the City Council hearings on the Newport Dunes show). No aipificant incidents were reported by the fire department over the three-day holiday weekend. The citywide ban on fireworks seemed to have worked -property damage was zero, injuries were zero, for the first time in a long time. But apparently idiocy is not restricted· to certain holiday periods, because last Sunday somebody, reportedly youngsters, set off an illegal M-80 firecncker in a field of dry grass on a hillside near Superior A venue and Pacific Coast Hip way, starting a fll'C wbicb destroyed one condominium and threatened leVel'al others before beina brought under control. Newport Beach and Huntiqton &e.cb firet:iahten spent nearly an hour in stiffing midday beat contrOlJina the blaze. Luckily, none were injured. They even ~ to aaft tbe family dog from the 1mob-filled cdndo unit (tbe family wa not at home at tbe time). But, the potential for injury or death wa cerWnly there, banging in the air with the acrid smoke, u the blue conaumed the residence and licked tbreateniqly at neighboring units. The real· shame of this is that the fll'C, like moat fuewort-related mishaps, wu apparently 111oci•ted with juveniles. They get their bands on illegal fireworks -perhaps from their parents, perhaps from a friend who got them from bis or her parents -intending to just have some fun, to play, and the next thing they know, they've burned a house down or injured themselves or someone else. It is something that can scar a child emotionally, if not physically. We hope that the younpten who started Sunday's fire are caught -so that the parents can be held financially liable for the damage and we can write about that and hopefully make all parents more careful next year. Certainly, the fireworks shows and aerial displays staged by professional pyrotecbniciana are safe and breathtakingly beautiful and deserve to be continued. But, when will we ever be rid of M-IOa and their destructive cousins that e.ch year came such destruction md, too often, injury or eYeD death? BY RALPH RODHEIM The S3rd Annual "Flight of the Lazen" is coming. The oldest sailing event in the harbor is scheduled for Sunday, July 31, at I p.m. The starting cannon will sound in the vicinity of Beeks Pier (betwen Balboa Island and the Peninsula). Originally, this famous regatta was sailed in Snowbirds and called "Flight.of the Snow- birds." Now it's sailed in Lazers Sailors ... 11 In 1•rr.111111 ground balls which turned into infield outs. Harbor's hitting attack which was abysmal during much of last season is also major weakness of the summer squad. "I don't know about our hitting," Heck stated. "It hasn't been a real strong point for us. We're still not hitting the ball real aggressively." Heck described Costa Mesa as one of the weaker teams in the summer league . .. Mesa is not a real strong team. That's not a rap on them. But this is a weak summer league a nyway if you compare it to what we will be facing next ~pring (in the Sea View League)," Hec k added. Camp ... CHU_. frlm "'9 6 had ever had," explained Heck. "For years the thing that bas been lacking among the kids who play baseball in the New- port area are the basic f unda- mentals, .. Heck said. But Heck stressed that may be changing due to a strong little lt:ague program in Newport and baseball camps like the one he runs. The two-week camp covers all aspects of the game, Heck said. "We worked on base running, defensive alignment and of course we worked a lot on hitting, pitching and catching," he added. The camp is open to any kids in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Each day, Heck conducted three hours of drills. Defensive skills were worked on with the group and then the players were broken into smaller groups to practice bitting. The players I worked on their bunting abilities 1 and also bit off pitching machines and live pitching. Games were also held at the camp, so the playen could use what they had learned in game situations. Heck was assisted by several other instructors at the camp including Brent Mayne, catcher for Cal State FuJlerton, Joey James, who played for Newport HMbor in 1985 and now plays for baseball squad at the Uni- versity of California Los AnaeJes. .. Jazz pianists featured From two different lands, two of the world's top jazz pianists, Keiko Matsui and David Benoit, will perform at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Sunday, July 17, at 8 p.m. Both artists have scaled Bi/1- board 's contemporary jazz charts in recent months with their energetic, expressive mus- ical styles. Matsui melds flavon of her native Japan with the foot-tapping tempo of American contemporary jazz; Benoit, of Southern Calif omia, backs the lush melodies that flow from his acoustic piano with hot horns and sassy atrinp. The man is fabulous." Benoit first teated his creative talents as a composer while in high school, writing an original music score for the drama club's presentation of "Tom Jones." It turned out to be the catalyst that launched his musicaJ career. After studying composition and piano at El Camino College, he got bis fmt big break in 1975 whed' be met composer Richard Baskin and was invited to play on the soundtrack to Robert Altman 's film "Nashville." He accompanied singer Gloria Lynn at leading Los Angeles clubs, where Benoit developed a strong reputation in jazz circles and quickly became a fint~ studio musician for such artists as Kenny Rankin, Patty Austin and Barry Manilow. While working as a conductor and arranger for such Las Vegas acts as Lainie Kazan and Connie Stevens, Benoit began devleop. ing his own material and was finally penuaded by friends to record some demonstration tapes. Benoit's audience grew quickly when be releued "This Side Up" in 1985 and the album scaled the jazz charts. "It really surprised me," says Benoit. ..I had just hoped it would get on the Biiiboard charts. I was in Japan when it hit the top five, and I just couldn't believe it. It was a wonderful feeling." Keiko Matsui's following bas also been growing rapidly since the release of her fint solo album, "A Drop Of Water" (1987), which earned a berth in the top 20 on the Billboard contemporary jazz chart. This solo release follows her success as a member of Cosmos, a popular Japanese fusion group that performed over 100 con- certs and recorded four albums, in twoyean. An exceptional talent, Matsui began her musical trainina at the age of four and was soon writing her flnt compositions. At 18, as the top player at the renowned Yamaha Music School in Japan, she wu selected by Yamaha to score the original soundtrack of a major Japanese motion pic- ture. But when she went into real estate eight years ago, she quickly learned that her poten- tial would lead to greater things. In fact, she was Select's top producer in 1986, 1987 and is heading in that direction for 1988. Parker is modest about her accomplishments. "l got there by working hard,'"' she said. Before she joined the ranks of the realtors, Parker was married and raising her daughters. After a divorce, she decided real estate would be one job that would help to support the family. She started out with Coldwell Banker-Costa Mesa and after six months, joined Select. "It was called .Select Proper- ties then," she said. Getting into real estate when she did, Parker recalled the extremely high interest rates of 20 percent. "My fmt home was a V.A. sale and I sold it at 12 percent," she remembered. "It closed 60 days later at 14 percent. This was back in the days of lcreative financing.• " She explained that in today's market, creative financing would not necessarily work. But in the early 1980s every agent would have to know creative financing or not be considered a good agent, Parker said. Parker believes that honesty and integrity arc two important maxims to work by. For her, it. has paid off in many referral clients. "You have to be honest and truthful, and I wouldn't sell someone a property that I wouldn't live in myself," she said. "I assess location and the client's income." Parker said that in today's market homes sell quickly, because of low inventory. She recalled that a f cw ycan ago, there were many homes for sale and no buyers. Now it is the other way around. "The younger people want to buy because the interest rates arc down and the payments would be the same as a rent payment," she said.
