Complimentary cab rides are being
offered this season to local raidents
who have imbibed too much holiday

Co-sponsored by Mothers Against
Drunk Driving and Comprehensive
Care Corporation (Care Unit), the free
rides are available from Christmas Eve
through New Year's Day between the
houn of 7 p.m. and 3 Lm.
Care Unit spokesperson Lynell Stan-
ford said the program, which is in its
seventh year, is designed to prevent
drinken from driYing.

Free cab rides will be available
throughout Orange and Los Angeles

Marino said he passed out a
questionnaire to students after
the sessions and received about

Mickey Mouse took a break
from his busy birthday festivities
at Disneyland to help the Girl
Scouts of Orange County kick
off their fund raising campaign
last week.
The celebrated mouse was
accompanied by his t:ohorts,

duck praise through his quick
wit and self-deprecating humor.
.. Oh, we never wrote the
cartoons for children or adults.
we did them for ourselves. It was
just a coincidence that other
people found them funny," he
says.
In fact, children and adults
alike still tune in each Saturday
morning and every weekday
afternoon to catch the ongoing
hijinks of the .. wascally wabbit"
and his friends Daffy Duck,
Road Runner and Wile E.
Coyote, Porky Pig. Elmer Fudd,
Pepe le Pew and Y oscmitc Sam;
all of which have the unmistak-
able Jones touch.
Jones claims that his crazy
celluloid friends have touched
him, or rather, are him in some
aspects.
"Well. I'd like to say my
favorite character is Bugs
because we'd all like to be Bugs.
He's a comic hero, a winner. But
to tell the truth I like them all
and I can better sympathize with
Daffy and Wile E."
Jones said that he understands
Daffy the best, while he tends
to make the same mistakes as
the coyote .. geenyus" who never
quite gets his (Beep Beep) road
runner dinner.
.... think we're aJI more famil-
iar with error than triumph and
as far as Pepe goes, well I'd like
to be more like him. It never
occurs to him that he's not the
most desirable man in the
world," he laughed.
Many of Jones' characters do
make small triumphs, although
they a re laden with handicaps.
Daffy, for instance, is saddled
with a terrible lisp. which Jones
said was inspired by Warner
Bros. producer Leon Schlesin-
ger.
"We were looking for a voice
for Daffy, something that would
stand out. So we decided to use
Leon's. We knew we could get
away with it because he never
listened to us.
"'He'd come walking into the
studio, ask us what we were
working on and we'd tell him,
·· -~Oh. just a story about a trans-
vestite chicken," and he'd say~
'Great work.' "
However, Schlesinger was
listening the day Daffy Duck
premiered in the studio. He
thought the voice was great,
Jones recalled, but didn' recog-
nize it as his own.
.. He jumped up after the
screening and said, 'Jethuth
Chrith fclluths, thath a funny
voith, where did ya geth thath?-
Daff y is just one of the many
characters that Jones has
created, developed a personality
for, or drawn for many years,
after "'failing" into the business
in the early 30s.
Although that wucally wab-
bit usually takes a wrong turn
·at Albuquerque, Jones has
seemed to take all the right ones,
even if they weren't his idea.
When he entered the anima-
tion faeld as a celluloid wuber
frah out of college, Jones insists
he still could not draw but
"'could fake it quite well." He
landed a job wuhing the cellu-
loid frames so that, with new
ones aoina at the high cost of
tnen cents apiece. they could be

won the Newsreel Theatre's
award for the best animation of
the year, a patriotic cartoon
called "'Old Glory". An honor,
he says, that was never bestowed
before nor since.
A few years later Jones met
Theodore Geisel, who is better
known as Dr. Seuss, and the two
created Private Snafu, a .. goof-
up soldier."
It was aJmost 25 years later
that the team produced one of
the most popular and famous
animated Christmas stories ever:
"'How the Grinch Stole Christ-
mas."
"'Ted and I wrote the screen-
play for 'The Grinch• together
and we decided Boris Karloff
was the only penon to do tbe
narration for it. He wu perfect,"
Jones aaid.
Along with another collabo-
ration, "'Horton Hean a Wlto,"
these two films won the Peabody
A ward for Television Program-
ming Excellence, an award that
Jones says .. has been given
before and since," adding to his
two Academy Awards he
received in 1950 for Pepe le
Pew's "'For Sccnti-McntaJ Rea-
sons" and a documentary co-
written with Friz Freleng, "'So
Much For So Little."

In fact, children and adults
alike still tune in each Saturday
morning and every weekday
afternoon to catch the ongoing
hijinks of the .. wascally wabbit"
and his friends Daffy Duck,
Road Runner and Wile E .
Coyote. Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd,
Pepe le Pew and Yosemite Sam;
all of which have the unmistak-
able Jones touch.
Jones claims that his crazy
celluloid friends have touched
him, or rather, arc him in some
~pccts.
"Well, I'd like to say my
f avoritc character is Bugs
because we'd all like to be Bup.
He's a comic hero, a winner. But
to tell the truth I like them all
and I can better sympathize with
Daffy and ·Wile E."
Jones said that he undentands
Daffy the best, while he tends
to make the same mistakes as
the coyote .. gecnyus" who never
quite gets his ('Beep Beep) road
runner dinner.
.. I think we're all more famil-
iar with error than triumph and
as far as Pepe goes, well I'd like
to be more like him. It never
occurs to him that he's not the
most desirable man in the
world," he laughed.
Many of J ones' characters do
make small triumphs. although
they arc laden with handicaps.
Daffy, fo r instance, is saddled
with a terri ble lisp, which J ones
said was inspired by Warner
Bros. producer Leon Schlesin-
ger.
"We were looking for a voice
for Daffy, something that would
stand o ut. So we decided to use
Leon's. We knew we could get
away with it because he never
listened to us.
.. He'd come walking into the
studio, ask us what we were
working on and we'd tell him,
'Oh, just a story about a trans-
vestite chicken,' and he'd say,
'Great work.• "
However, Schlesinger was
listening the day Daffy Duck
premiered in the studio. He
thought the voice was great,
Jones recalled, but didn't recog-
nize it as his own.
.. He jumped up after the
screening and said, 'Jcthuth
Chrith felluths, thath a funny
voith, where did ya geth thath?-
Daff y is just one of the many
characters that Jones has
created, developed a penonality
for, or drawn for many years,
after .. failing" into the business
in the early 30s.

It was a good year
As we sit back, look f orw~rd to the New Year and
take stock of 1988, we have to conclude that these past
12 months have been a time of achievement and changes,
mostly positive, for the city of Newport Beach.
The year 1988 will be remembered for many things.
In politics and government, of course, it will be
remembered as an election year, and a particularly lively
one. In January, Bob Badham announced he would not
seek reelection to the House of Representatives, and
the scramble was on. A tough, at times nasty, and
somewhat bizarre campaign ensued, which resulted in
Christopher Cox's election and Dave Baker's disgrace.
Cox will spend the next two years on Capitol Hill; Baker,
having pleaded guilty to a forgery charge stemming from
the last week of the campaign, will spend the next two
years on probation.
The City Council was also shaken up by this year's
balloting, with long-time slow-growth activist Jean Watt
ascending to the council, propelling I 0-year council-
member Don Strauss into the mayor's chair as the first
slow-growth mayor in the city since 1980. What effect
these changes will have on city policies is yet to be
determined, and this promises to be one of the more
interesting ongoing stories of 1989.

The outgoing mayor, John C. Cox Jr., left the city
with a legacy of progress, having steered a general plan
amendment through the governmental maze which will .
slash allowable commercial and office development
in the city by some 20 million square feet. Cox also
negotiated an agreement with the mayor of Irvine, Larry
Agran, that will allow plans for the much-needed San
Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor to go forward.

Al so this year, Newport Beach shone as a home of
sport's champions. From the double gold-medal
performance of Greg Barton in the Summer Olympics
to the CIF championship efforts of the Corona del Mar
High School football, water polo and tennis teams, 1988
provided local sports fans with a thrill a minute.

It is very important to obtain
the following information from
the other party or parties if you
have an automobile accident.
I). The full name, address and
telephone number of the driver
of the other automobile. Also
obtain their driver's license
number, and their work address
and telephone number. It is
helpful to obtain their date of
birth and their vehicle identifi-
cation number.
2). The full name, address and
telephone number of any pas-
seaaen in the other vehicle and
their work address and tele-
phone number.
3). The full name, address and
telephone number of any wit-
nesses to the accident along with
their wort address and tele-
phone number.
4). The full name and badge
number of the police officer if
a traffic collision report is
completed. It is also advisable
to determine whether the police
officer is from the California
Highway Patrol or a city police
department.
S). The license plate number,
year and mate of the other
automobile that was invovled in
the accident.
6). The name of the other
person's insurance company,
their agents f uU name, address
and telephone number.

Tough test ahead for CdM in · tourney

Each basketbalJ season there
comes a time when a team and
its coach discoven what kind of
cards they have been dealt.
That moment is here for
Corona del Mar High's basket-
ball team.
This week, CdM's cagers par-
ticipate in one of the toughest
local basketball tournaments at
Estancia Coast Christmas Clas-
sic.
The Sea Kings 's 1988-89 team
is loaded with potential but since
the start of the season Cd M
Coach Paul Orris has wondered
if his team has what it takes to
play with the best in Orange
County.
The Sea Kings (5-3) are com-
ing off a recent 68-26 rout of
Costa Mesa High. However,
Orris wasn't overjoyed about the
win. He had hoped for a tougher
test for his team before they
entered the Estancia tourney.
Top ranked teams such as Irvine,
Santa Clara, Edison, Estancia,
among others arc participating
in the tourney. CdM couJd meet
either Santa Clara or Edison in
the later r_ounds of the
competition.
But a win is a win. Orris and
his team will take it where they
can get it.
"It wasn't like we beat the best
team in Orange County,•• Orris
remarked ... Costa Mesa has
some problems size wise. When
their biggest kid is a freshman,
you know that is asking an awful
lot."
From the start, CdM's team
dominated the smaller team
from Costa Mesa. Mesa was
without a player taller than 6-
feet in their line up.
As a result, the Sea Kings'
controlled the boards on both
sides of the court for much of
the game and their defense
closed off the inside lanes and
forCcd the Mustangs to tum to
their outside shooting game
which was lacking. CM rushed
their shots only hitting 12 of 32
shots from the field, 38 percent.
Costa Mesa's point guard
Timmy Nguyen was limited to
10 points. The Mustangs were
held to one point in the final
quarter.
Matt Herrington led the Sea
Kings with 17 points, junior
guard Mark Flint finished with
9 points (which all came in the
fourth quarter),· Chris Pliha
added 8 points, Matt Cwiertnia
had 7 points Brian Spratt and
Sledge Fredericks chipped in 6
points each.
Orris had his entire line up for
the game except for guard Jeff
Clark, who is still out with an
knee injury. This included three
players from the football team,
guards Warren and Weston
Johnson, and forward Jeff Jack-
son. Orris used the three players
against Costa Mesa and said he
was satisfied with their efforts.
"I have a lot more options

for a quieter tempo and more
agreaive defense and rebound-
ing. We also emphasized
patience on offense all week
which I think we were more
patient against Costa Mesa. In
the Irvine tourney we were
playing too much one on one
stuff on offense," be added.
"We're going to find out some
things in the Estancia Tourna-
ment," he added.
In the Costa Mesa game, the
Sea Kings jumped out to a 7-
0 lead and never looked back.
Cd M employed a full court press
which befuddled the Mustangs,
who turned over the ball several
times in the first period.
Cd M built up 24-8 lead after
one quarter with Herrington
sinking-8 points and Warren
Johnsob scoring 5.
The Sea Kin' kept up the
pressure in scconCI quarter going
on 16 7 run to build a 40-1 S lead
at the half. Cd M shot 62 percent
from the field ( J 8-of-29
attempts) in first half. They bit
31 of 50 shots in the game (62
percent).
Chris Pliha came off the bench
to put in 6 of his 8 points in the
second period.
Herrington helped stave off
any comeback attempt by the
Mustangs in the third period as
he scored 9 points including a
three-pointer. CdM led 53-25
after the third.

Prosperity in obscurity.
That could best describe Cor-
ona del Mar and Newport Har-
bor High's soccer programs.
Last year,Harbor's squad fin-
ished second in the Sea View
League and reached the CI F
playoffs. Two years ago, CdM's
team finished second in league
and reached the play.offs but
they struggled last season and
didn't qualify for postscason
action.
Both schools field promising
squads this season.
However, the edge might have
to go Cd M because of their
experience. The Sea Kings have
13 seniors on the team including
several standout players return-
ing from last season.
This includes seniors forward
Sohan Mutucumarana. left for-
ward Pat Callaghan (who was
inj ured much of last season),
fullback Greg Dalton, left fut-

It's that time of year again.
Time to look back at the
accomplishments of f!Ccwport's
local prep athletes over the past
12 months and single out the
hard work and dedication of the
coaches and players who made
it all happen.
In 1988, Corona del Mar and
Newport Harbor High's athletic
programs continued to prosper.
The faJI was especially reward-
ing for both 1ebools as most of
their fall sports pro1rams
reached potbeMOn play.
This was the year CdM's
f ootbaJI team f IMlly did it.
The Sea ~inp threw off 26
years of doubt and near misses
as they buried their doubters and
Valencia, 17-7 in the CIF title
game. For coach Dave Holland,
it was his first Cl F 4A Southern
Section championship in IS
years of coaching at Cd M. It also
was the first Cl F football title
in the school's history as the 1988
squad logged an unbeaten sea-
son with 12-0-2 record.
The key to Cd M's success this
season was postseason emer-
gence of quarterback Ty Price
and the touah playina from the
team's def'emift equd.

Junior Chris Connelly plays

season.
Cd M lost some of last year's
top players to graduation includ-
ing Matt Tomli~ Brian Sheehy,~
goalie Brent Krum. But they
have back Callaghan and Mut-
ucumarana, who are CdM's
primary ofTensive threats this
season.
Recently, the Sea Kings
fought a tough Sunny Hills team
to a 0-0 stalemate in the rain and
mud. It was a slow, defensive
struggle in which neither team
could capitalize on their scoring
opportunities.
The other players that make
up Cd M's squad include senior

A colorful year around the bay in 19

If one were to paint a '1988
Marine Scene, it would be full
of action and color. The bright-
est colon would represent the
great marine-oriented events
such as opening day with bur-
gees flying high and the entire
bay in full dress. Action would
be represented by all the exciting
series: the 66, Angelman, Dick-
son, Ahmanson. etc. The golden
colors would shine through with
the U.S . Yacht Club Challenge,
the Gold C up regattas, the Ayres
Trophy regatta, Flight of the
Lasers, Governor's Cup and the
MORC Internationals. The pas-
tels would be represented by all
the Talented Female, Junior
Commodores. All Girls and
Little Old Ladies regattas.

After a pretty good regular
season, Price truly came alive in
postscason play. In four playoff
contests, Price threw for over
100 yards each time.
Other players who need to be
mentioned include Jeff Clark,
for his spectacular game-
winning catch in the semifinals
against Pacifica, Weston John-
son, who played well both as a
defensive back and receiver this
season, running backs Greg
Haack, Brian Lucas, and
Katovsich and tight end Jeff
Jackson.
However, it didn't end there
for CdM. All five of their fall
sports qualified for postseason
action and Cd M's water polo
and girls tennis team also too k
home CIF titles in 1988. T he Sea
Kings· c ross country squad
finished third in the Cl F finals
but they went to win their fi rst
Division 11 state championship
ever.
In water polo. CdM's team
rallied in the second half to
defeat Sunny Hills, 10-7. for
their second straight C l F 4A
Southern Sectio n
championship. As he had done
a ll season. Chris Oeding led the
way with three goaJs in the finals.
Other standouts include Josh
Speyer. Gunnar Gustafson.
Hagen Grantham, Brandon
Howald and goalie Greg
Rhodes. who had 10 saves
against Sunny Hills.
The playing of freshman phe-
nom Keri Phebus sparked the
Sea King • netters to their CIF
title win. Phebus also captured
the individual singles 4A cham-
pionship crown.
CdM•s runners took the state
championship through the
efforts of Eddie Lavelle. Greg
Shryock, Chris Cannon, Paul
Scott, Hunter Pierce.
CdM's girls volleyball team
took the Sea View league title
in 1988 but they stumbled in the
1eeond round of the playoffs.
Laurie Sawin was named Sea
View Leap volleyball player of
race, the 41 st annual, finishing
over 300 yachts in less than an
hour. However, even more
important was the huge truck
loads of supplies taken to those
less fortunate across the border.
NOSA also sponsored the
second annual CHOC regatta
raising several thousand dollars
for charity. .
On the lighter side of our
painting you would see the ever-
growing Electric Boat race and
of our 1988 Marine Scene;
almost every weekend you could
sec a wedding on the bay. What
a beautiful setting to begin a life

gondolas to celebrate anniver-
saries-one of the best in Joseph

Boat Parade. The earthern hues
would be represented by the
spectacular Wooden Boat Fes-
tival and, of course, the C ham-
ber's C:::lean Harbor Day. The
still controversial America' Cup
would have to be included in our
Marine Scene (thi area of our
painting would be colorful.
however, long and drawn out).
Yes. romance would be part
the year in 1988.
At Harbor, the girls cross
country continued their domi-
nance of the sport by winning
their second straight Division II
state title. During the season,
Stacy Pando developed into one
of the best runners on the
Sailors' team. Lena Dahbour,
Eva Mattson, Kim Robinson
and Sandra Ruffini also ran well
for Harbor's team in 1988.
Harbor's water polo squad fe ll
short in their bid to reach the
C IF finals. The Sailors fell to
Sunny Hills in the semifinal
match up. Jason Morgan, Jason
Phillips, Steve Moore, Kurt
Edler, Stephan Andranian,
Barry Dichon and goalie Chris
Sanita, turned in solid efforts for
the Sailors' team.
As a member of Harbor's girls
volleyball team, Sienna Curci
received all-Cl F honors as a
setter. The Sailors also lost in
the second round of the CIF
playoffs.
Harbor's tennis team also
reached the playoffs but lvst in
the first round.
A playoff bid eluded the
Sailors football sqaud this sea-
son. But Harbor received good
efforts fro m running backs Tom
Walker and Robbie Power,
quarterbacks Steve Scheck and
Tim Newberry, guards/ def en-

ro manticist.
Speed would be a vital part

Earlier in the year, CdM's girls
track team won the CIF 3A title
behind the efforts of d 'Layne
Kerr and the rest of 1600 meter
relay squad, Chickie Moiso, Jill
Young, and Sawin. At the state
track meet, CdM's 1600 meter
relay team, finished third but
shattered the Orange County
record in the event previously set
by Mission Viejo in 1986. It was
the most successful track season
in CdM's history.
For Harbor, Jim Gccrlings
placed second in the 1600 meters
race.
Also last spring, Mike Curci
led Harbor's boys volleyball into
the CIF finals. After stunning
comeback wins over Wood -
bridge and Marina in the
playoffs, Harbor's good fortune
ran out as they lost to Loyola
in the CIF championship game.
All in all, 1988 was a milestone
year for local a~ It.. still
remains to be seen if 1988 will
be an hard act to fo llow but don't
count o n it.
Both chools look to have
promising teams for the upcom-
ing year in a variety of sports
ranging from basketball and
soccer to track. volleyball and
football.

splash of the old and a dab of
the new. The old could be the
tremendous asset the Newport
Beach Nautical Museum is
becoming and the great year it
had under the leadership of Pete
Barrett. The new would be the
Mariner's Mile Marine Center,
another wonderful asset for
Newport Beach. it's nice to see
that the marine industry can
survive in Newport Beach.
Unfortunately, not all of our
1988 Marine Scene would be full
of color and action. The somber
to nes would have to be the loss
of three great Newporters-all
closely involved with boating:
Mary Wagner who wrote this
very Marine Scene so elo-
quently. Andy Fitzpatrick. the
Sea Scouts' mighty leader and
Vin Jorgensen, the man who
meant so very much to so many.
The greys of our painuna
would be the political contro-
venics like the Committee of
2000'1 stories about .. Feces in the
Bay." There is really no room
in Newport or o~tbis mural for
that type of trash. Other greys
wouJd be the great Charter Boat
Controversy and the Coast
Guard (hopcfulJy that issue will
become brighter in 1989).

Conser, painted by the very
talented Scott Kennedy and the
frame's brite work finishing
touches supplied by Suzanne
Davis.
Overall, the l 988 Marine
Scene would be a wonderful
collage made up of many wond-
erful memories.

The show begins with the
Toymaker, played by veteran
actor Robert Morse, sitting on
the moon against. a backdrop of
the planets. He refers to T oyland
as "That blue marble over
there," but it looks suspiciously
like Earth. The story follows the
possible destruction of Toyland
by all of the aforementioned
unthinkable thoughts.
At first glance, the Toyland
setting docs in part resemble the
Disney movie, but the plot veers
away from same. Contemporary
in nature, the language includes
such '80s terms as geek and dork
and some of the kids arc riding
skateboards. We are introduced
to those old favorites such as
Jack Be Nimble, who breakdan-
ces and raps; Little Boy Blue,
who blows a mean horn: a
materialistic Little Bo Peep; a
narcissistic Tom Piper and a
very hip Mother Hubbard. Oth-
ers making cameo appearances
are Little Red Riding Hood.

Humpty Dumpty. Mary Mary

The Babes, Jane and Alan, are
the victims of their evil uncle,
Barnaby. He enlists the aid of
two Laurel and Hardy look-
alikes, the mercenaries Gon-
zar10 and Rodri10, to kill the
Babes so he can win their rich
inheritance. Barnaby. played by
Peter Mark Ric.hman, is a
villain-like character, who elicits
hisses from the audience every
time he appears.
The "March of the Toy Sold-
iers" is a truly '80s vcnion,
complete with. laser weaponry,
but the toy soldiers look they
way ooe would expect, paiated
faces 1milin1 u they annihilate
the enemy .

casually pushes a woman into
the water as he and Michael
Caine saunter down a board-
walk in the South Qf France.
Unfortunately, that scene
docsn 't appear in the movie.
which also cheats on a few other
things, such as cohesive acting.
competent directing, credible
plot and creative use of the
comedic talents of all involved.

movie that lures an audience in.
making them think ... This is
going to be great-Martin and
Caine as a pair of funny con

.... Reflecting on the angels in our iives

Time after time, while attend-
ing events for the Insights
column and at other meetings,
speakers and spiritual lcad~rs
have asked their audiences to
reflect on those times when they
can look back in their lives and
really see from a new perspective
when they experienced God's
presence in time of need , even
though they were not aware of
it at the time of trouble.
Sometimes, it cari only be
realized in retrospect that He
was there and it often ~omes in
the appearance of a person,
perhaps. a stranger who comes
in a time of stress. All of us have
these angels and as this year
comes to an end, it seems
appropriate to share our very
special angel with you and
enco~ragc you to think a&out
some of your own.
My husband, Gary and I met
here more than 20 years ago. I
had finished my third year as a
4th grade teacher in Alhambra.
He had finished medical school
and we were on our way ·to
Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was
to intern at Kauikeolani Chil-
dren's Hospital. We were very
excited about these plans and
expecting our first child in 2 ~
months. The hospital would
provide housing for SSO a
month. However, when we
reached Hawaii, we discovered
there was no housing left. No
problem, we thought, we would
just look for something else. But
!t wasn't long before OU(..2,P~:.
ism was dampened as we
searched and searched cvery-
w herc.
What a sight it must have been
to have shown up at a retirement
home in a too· tjght muu-muu.
It was not only that we could
not afford the rents, but my
condition was a detriment, de-
finitely not rental potential.
Finally, in an act of frustra-
tion and desperation, and
swollen feet, I plopped down on
a curb on one of the busiest
boulevards in Honolulu and
bawled. It was not a little polite
sobbing, but real loud. Gary is
not one who likes to bring
attention to hjmself and he was
really embarrassed and tried to
get me to move to the bushes
and conceal my anguish.
A lady came by and asked
what the problem was. We told
her and she invited ua to one of
the loveliest condominiums we
had seen since our move-and
needless to say, we had seen
plenty! We had tea and a visit
with her and then went back to
our dumpy motel. Our next stop
was going to be the .. Y".

INSIGHIS '
We were in our room a short
time, when the phone rang and
it was the lady. She said she
would be goina to Arizona for
a year to be with her husband
who was an educator there, and
would we like to live in her
condo while she was there? How
could we afford that on an
intern 's salary? She made it
possible. Then she invited us to
move in with her for 10 days
while she got herself ready to
leave for the year. She was aware
of our financial circumstances
and made us very welcome,
going out of her way to show
me how to get to the doctor•s
office ~ where to 1bop for ttie
best values, then she left for the
mainland.
We kept in touch all the while,
and that year 1968-69 was one
of the most m~morable and
interesting times of our lives,
both in the people we met and
in interesting experiences.
As the years l.~ ,aiid our
lives became b~'r' and busier
we lost contact with this lady
until one day while reading the
LA. nmes I saw her beautiful
face, deep in thought as she
listened to a lecture at UCI on
the problems in Central Amer-
ica. I discovered she was 20
minutes away from us and
invited her to dinner with Don,
her husband, to meet our family
and to celebrate finding her
again.
We have been reminded of
another time, more than 2,000
ycan ago, (and I would not
presume to feel in the same
category) when there was no
room at the inn, when another
young couple were literally
homeless and expecting a child.
For us there was no room at the
condos, and while our angel's
name wu not Gabriel. but Gerri.
Bridgeman, not of Heaven but
of Honolulu, her importance in
our lives bas never left us.
Because of her generosity and
her love, her unselfish gestures
to us have given us another gift.
We have been better able to cope
with the less kind othen in our
lives because we have .r the (

for US. I
\ Now, more than 23 years later,
she is still a comfort and always
will be to us. I believe the magic
of the holiday season is when we
really see these gifts that have
been given to us by God-when
He gives us the choice to become
His love to others.
Maybe your resolution for
1989 could be to let those angels
in your life know their impor-
tance to you. They may not
expect it because it wasn't done
for return favors, but from real
love. Showing your appreciation
may be one of the most impor-
tant things you do next year!

As Waterfront Homes has grown, so's s.he

Ann Kanzler with Waterfront
Homes, was a natural for real
estate when she entered the field
in 1977.
"I had a background in build-
ing and developing, so it was
easy for me," she recalled.
Kanzler had been in real estate
when she was younger. But she
didn't work while raising her five
children. In 1977, while two of
her boys were still in high school,
she joined Waterfront Homes.
