Personnel Director Duane Munson
said he was notified last week o f the
decision by the City Employee Asso-
ciation and the Newport Beach
Employee~ League, to hire the Long
Beach firm.
"This doesn't mean that t hey have
disbanded in favor of outside labor
representation, but rather consultants
who will mediate the negotiations."
Munson said.
Prior negotiations were handled by
a n inhousc team that would mediate for
the six different employee associations.
Munson said.

TORCH SONG TRILOGY The long-
awaited film . adaptation of Harvey Fier-
stein's play has proved to be one of the ..
strongest. and best made dramatic films
of the year. Starring Fierstein himself as
a professional female impersonator, and
directed by veteran PcruJ Bogart, known
mainly for his 1V work, the film master-
full y mixes comedy, tragedy, and music
into a first-rate entertainment. Chroni-
cling two of the hero's love affairs with
men (Brian Kerwin and Matthew Brod-
erick) and histtottbled--relationship with
his strong-willed mother (Anne
Bancroft) in the 70s and earJy 80s, t~e
movie is never preachy or moralistic in
its depiction of gay life. Much of it~
power can be attributed to the high-
voltage performance of Fierstein and
, Bancroft , as well as to a superb use of
1azz and popular mu 1c. (WQ9dy Allen
cou~ learn a lot from this mo\.ie .) AJ-
tho gh the material shows some of it -

hate to find this film treated as a ·special

Willie ... Brown got th~ front-page headlines for his
squeaky re-election as Speake11 of the Assembly for the
fifth time, but David Jlqberti also was elected to a fifth
term as President Pro Tern of the State Senate, and
·• that's a pretty good track record.
The State Senate under. Roberti has had its ridiculous
and rflJCOUS moments, but it largely has retained its
repQtatton as the more deliberative house of the
Legislature.
The Republicans re-elected their Senate leaders too, with .
Ken Maddy of Fresno helding-<>n to the minority-!eadership
spot and Sen. John Doolittle of Rocklin retai"1ing the caucus
chairmanship. Maddy and Doolittle provide an interesting
mix of moderate-conservative (Mad.dy) and ctrdent-
conservative.
Still, neither house has anything of which to be proud
when it comes to· pr(}viding political leadership. Most
of the lawmakers are caught up so much in self-survival
that they have bee~ unable, unwilling or both when it
comes to tackling the very difficult issues of the day,
and ieriators are no exception.

. If either house bad shown a willingness to tackle
diffic'ult problems, the voters wouldn't have had to enact
such measures as the tax-cutting Proposition 13, the
subsequent Gann spending limit, or any ~f a number
of other ballot initiatives during the last 10 years.

McManigal was invited to
work with Soviet artists in their
tudios to develop and co-create

Youth Ambassadors of Amer-
ica. Her decision to travel in the
Soviet Union was initiaUy based ·

Though a healthy percentage of
CdM parents are members of
various symphony guilds,
patrons of the Perfm:.roing Arts
Center and serve on the boards
of philanthropic cultural organ-
izations throughout Orange
County, few, if any, CdM stu-
dents are fami}iar with the term
"concerto... .
Last Wednesday an old CdM
tradition was revived when the
students body was treated to a
special Winter Holiday Assem-
bly. The offering was an inipres-
sivc and very professional pre-
