Efforts to push through a SO year
lease for the Balboa Bay Club were
delayed Monday night when Newport
Beach City CounciJmembers voted to
postpone the request.
Approval of the agreement would
have guaranteed the famous club a.SO
year lease of city property, as well as
the ti.me necessary to finance a much
needed rehab ilitation project club
memben intead to unilertakc .
.. But Couacilmembcr Evelyn Hart
said she could DOt support tbe lease due
to a pmHp in the City Charter that
forbidl lr-iaa of city property for more
than 25 years.
However. City Attorney Robert
Burnham told tbe council that tbe
matter is au~ to interpretation and
said a 50 year leate is allowable and ·
would be leplly binding.
In ldclition &o her hesitation to grant
a half century lcale, Hart said abe would
also like to aee tbe Balboa Bay Oub
demolish the Ten-ace Apartments at the
turn of t be century to make room for
a public park.
"'No one in this city is more fiscally
conservatift than I am. But rm asking
the people of Newport Beach for a
vision . . . to look at the future. The

Education Weck. by honoring teachers
and students of the district's adult
education program this evening.
Awards to Superintendent Dr. John
Nicoll, educator Dr. Frank Lamie and
students Dr. Joseph Tuycn Le and
program offer$. Nicoll cstabf bed the
Davis site as an adult learning center
in Sept., 1987. This year. 6,384 tudents
arc enrolled in the various proaram the

nitaries will be on hand to give out the
awards, including Newport Beach
Mayor Don Strau and California
State Senator Marian Bergeson, Super-
visor Tom Riley and Jim Fournier,
chief of staff for Congressman Chris-
topher Cox. The festivities will take
place at the Davis Adult Learning
Center, tonight at 6:30 p.m. A reception
will be held in the library precceding
the ceremony. .

Ban r()tten apples
AD old favorite Disney movie, "'Snow White," shows
the wicked stepmother dressed as a witch, delivering
a poisoned apple tCiJsnow White. The stepmother was
insanely jealous of Snow White's beauty and wished her
dead.
That story took place in medieval times.
But in modem times, it seems we have a whole host
of wicked stepmothers, who have been delivering
poisoned apples to our children. The chemical Damin-
ozide, which is sold under the trade name of Alar, is
a pesticide commonly used on apples. This chemical
penetrates the skin of the apple and large amounts of
it increucs the risk of cancer in children.
What is baffling is that the Food and Drug
Administration allows such a chemical to be used on
food. Alar is a growth agcn~ which helps to prevent
bruises. In other words, it is used to make the fruit
appear prettier. .

is a small village, complete with
the issues and problems that a
community at large faces. Drugs
and alcohol habits .on campus
parallel usage in society.
According to Catherine
McDonough, director of the
student health service, "national
statistics indicate that as many
as 30 percent of this country's
college students may have a
problem with alcohol or drugs ...
To deal With these practices,
OCC relia upon a substance
abuse committee, now more
than a year old. Three missions
drive this embryonic program
that grows monthly in its effort
to reach faculty and students.
The primary mission is edu-
cation. The committee provides
any campus classroom with
presentations by community
professionals who deal in aub-
atance abuse awareness. Presen-
ten from the Alcohol/ Drug
Education Prevention Team
(ADEPl) of Orange County, for
eumple, will speak upon call.

learned so far along this road?
One basic point they understand
is that developing a comprehen-
sive substance abuaepolicy must
include every level of the college
community in order to be suc-
cessful. Secondly, they have
come to know that aubltanoe
abuse is a culturally-rooted habit
that is more than a century old
in America. Al a result, the

For example, David Musto's
book, Wfhe American Disease,"

his 100-year biatory of heroin,
cocaine and morphine usage.

The hard part for Newport's
prep baseball squads begins
today.
That's when Newport Harbor
and Corona del Mar High's
teams open Sea View League
baseball action.
Both teams recently struggled
in their prescason outings. Har-
bor is still looking for their first
win after five straight losses
while CdM is 1-4.
The Sailo~ have tough task
of facing Tustin High's team
today at 3 p.m. in a home game.
Tustin has one of the best
basebaU squads in the league.
The Tillers' strength is in their
pitching staff .
.. lt s going to be tough to stay
with them," remarked Harbor
Coach BiJly White.
"They (Tustin) have some
good bitters. If we can stay close
to them, we might be able to
push across a run or two in the
late innings. It will probably a
2-1 or 1-0 type of game," White

hard act to follow.
Four years ago, audiences at
the Curtain Call Dinner-Theater
in Tustin, were treated to what,
perhaps, set the standard for all

director J ohn J. Ferola's respect
for the original 1967 script, and
the careful handling of the
mu ical within the limited con-
fines of a dinner theater made
the show an absolute delight.
Which brings u to the Cur-
tain Ca1r 1989 edition, which
continue through May 14.
Perhaps Olympic competition
and Pre idential election cover-
age improve in four year' time.
but "Cabaret" in Tustin doesn't.
Thi current staging. again
directed by Ferola. has all the
feel of a junior college produc-
tion a good one, but not what
we've come to expect from
Elizabeth Howard since she
opened the Curtain Call nine
ye~ns ago.
Most of the s hortcomings are
divorced from the castmembcrs.
who, with an exception or two,
deserve better. The scenic design
by Greg Henrichsen. although
almo t entirely new for this
production and not devoid of
effort, just doesn't work. A
pcrf ect example is the rented
room of Clifford Bradshaw
(Michael Wren), a one-book
novelist from the United States
whose travels take him to Berlin.
circa 1930. Not only do the
actor have to duck their heads
as they walk down a flight of
tairs, but they may enter from
no fewer than three pas agc-
ways. That' pretty decent archi-
tecture for a Oat going for 100
marks a month!
The ambitious. but poorly
functional second level creates
havoc for the lighting techni-
cians, who, one recent evening,
mi sed more spot than· a box
of generic-brand detergent.
Atop all this, the subpar design
of the often~mployed curtain of
1 inset and some oft he props used
in scenes at the Kit Kat Klub
couldn't help but resign the
production to inferior ranks.
A saving grace is in the mas-
tered German dialect and cngag-

the vital role of the emcee. The
way "Cabaret" was written by
John van Druten, one person is
required to steal much of the
show's thunder. As was Joel
Grey in the original Broadway
production and the 1972 film ,
Quick is up to the demanding
task, ju t as he was on the same
stage four years ago. His abra-
sive charm is unrerving and h_is
rendition of the opening number
"Wilkommen ... is arresting, yet
distant.
Gerlinde David on ~ Sally
Bowle~. the cabaret tar who
find politic and morality a
bore, is more believable than her
1985 predecc sor. Still. David-
son fails to give her character the
necessary tools beyond a pow-
erful solo of the title song.
Wren• C1iff ord Brad haw is
nothing more than mediocre.
Though charming and hand-
some enough for the role. Wren
·has seen far better days in two
recent Curtain Call shows:
60Promi cs, Promises" and MThe
Music Mao."
The warmth · of the show
comes from Deborah Brucher
and DaJe Jones. who portray
Frau Schneider (Bruchcr' third
time in the role) and Herr
Sachultz. He's Jewi h, she' not.
And though he·s as German as
s he is, an uprwing Third Reich
has made this romance an
uncomf ortablc one. The inter-
play between the e two fine
actors is trong and convi ncing
and best reflects the troubled
times caused by Hitler· pending
dictatorship.
Too bad the intense subject
matter cannot match the overall
production. Recalling the Cur-
tain Cali's previous staging of
.. Cabaret ... it makes thi reviewer
wonder. what is wrong with
sitting alone in your room? ,

Edmunds believes in musical enrichment

Many know Sally Edmunds as
the efficient, self-assured indi-
vidual who is presently serving
as president to the 145-member
PT A board at Corona dcl Mar
High School. She is renown for
her parent voluntccrism. both at
Harbor View Elementary and
.CdMHS and on the Harbor
Council PT A.
What many don' know is that
nearly a decade ago, she was
inspired to share her musical

"Teaching any kind of music
to children and having them like
it is truJy the joy of my lif c."
Edmunds mused.
S he approached tben-
principal of Harbor View, Dr.
BiJI Knight, with an idea for an
all-school musical production
called' the Spring Fling. Knight
suppo rted her enthusiasm for
teaching children vocal music
and giving them the opportunity
to perform for their peers and·
parents. Spring Fling was so
successful, so well-received, that
after several years with the
agreement and support of pres-
ent Principal Larry Alford. it
evolved into an annual patriotic
program. Edmunds applauds
Alford's philosophy.
"He only asks that each child
know the 'Star Spangled Banner·
and that they enjoy. as well as
learn, songs that arc enriching
and beneficial to them," she said.
Together they developed a
plan of two programs for the
year, one as a winter holiday
presentation and a patriotic one
in February.
"Due to the size of thew
school, we split the participants
by grades so that each performed
in one or the other on alternating
years," she said. "This gives each
chi1d the opportunity to perform
at Least once each year for an
audience which complies with
the 'Needs Assessment Goals' of
the school. ..
Edmunds returned to Harbor
View to plan. teac~ direct and
produce both programs each
year. The patriotic program
alone takes months of devotion
and dedication of time working
with hundreds of children so that
they will perform a memory of
which they will be forever proud.
The theme this year is .. Where
in the world but in America can
you sing true f recdom ·s song?"
· The title song is sung in part by
each participating grade level,
which this year was grades 2, 4
and 5. The cherub-like voices of
the second graders were raised
to sing such traditional pieces as
"Yankee Doodle," "This Land is
Yo ur Land" and .. Your a Grand
Old Flag." Grade four entered
in patriotic collars to present its
rendition of .. This is My Coun-
try" and .. Give me Your Tired,
Yo ur Poor." They also coordi-
nated this valuable music lesson
with their current social studies
curriculum by offering a group
of songs about California.
Besides a medley of the tradi-
tionaJ "America the Beautiful"
and "'Battle Hymn of the Repub-
lic," the fifth grade presented its
own song, tee Greenwood's
"God Bless the USA."
The fifth graden bad the most
extensive part of the program to
learn, but reaped many extra
rewards for their hard work. One
song which they usually sing is
called "Fifty Nifty ... which
includes all the states in alpha-
betical order. Many students
returning in later years recall
how they have mentally .. sung"
this song when taking a test in
other classes. Like a TV jingle
which is never forgotten, it has
proved a valuable study aid.
Later in the spring, the entire
grade will travel to the Veteran's
Hospital in Long Beach to
·prese nt its portion of the
program. It is here that the
biggest reward is bestowed upon
them. After their rousing ver-
sions of "Anchors Aweigh,"
"Wild Blue Yonder," .. Marine
Hymn" and .. The Caissons Go
Rolling Along," they can scan
the faces of the audience to many
teary-eyed men and women
reliving memories.
The other two grades also
reach out into the community
with their voices. This year the
second grade will take its per-
formance to the Oasis Center for
the .. Over 80 Birthday Party"
and the fourth grade will per·
form at a local nuning home.
The grades not performing this
year will send along the patriotic
bannen which they made u
decorations for the cafctorium.
A special one exclaims .. Wel-
come President Bush .. on which
each child in the class drew a
picture of the Chief Executive.
The Coordination of the patri-
otic program involves almost
every student and staff member
in some way. Fourth grade
teacher. Jeanne Johnson inter-
faces with all the grade levels and
does aU logistic planning. Stu-
dent Council officers ~ the
announcers and the ushers.
Computer teacher Scottia Evans
produces the programs and
Alford gives it whole-hearted
support by incorporating it as an
integral part of learning and the
teaching curriculum.
But the real credit goes to the
lady whose love for kids and
music makes this presentation a
valuable tradition. Edmunds
admitted thaube is proud of tbi
program and of the kids who
work so hard to make it special.

From Mom to Auntie, Fay has the right stuff

anyone, but chose me."
McGrath's "I can do any-
thing" attitude bas placed her
bu iness in the six figure range.
with no end in sight. "I told one

When the Farw_ell family of
Newport Beach built their home
on Peninsula Point in 1941 , the
surrounding area was just com-
ing into its own. The home,
located at 2124 E. Balboa BouJe-
vud, ii in the traditional style,
combinina the warmth of Cape
Cod with the openness of con-
temporary.
Tbe home ii the Farwell estate
and Marty Farwell wu known
for her artwork depicting local
scenes. Everything in the home
is original, which makes this

year in a row, considers herself
a goal oriented person from 'way
back.
For instance, while in high
school, Shipley knew that the
only way she would get to college
was to cam a scholarship. So she
worked hard and the reward was
a full scholarship to the U niver-
sity of Southern CaJifomia. Her
tuition for four years was paid
and the scholarship even took
care of buying her books.
"Goals have always been
important to me," Shipley said.

I almost always have success
with the goals I set for myself.~
Shipley said she also applies
those principles to her .busin:ss.
She appears a very caJin and
mild-mannered person, but
inside, Shipley is a dynamo. She
was the top listing agent for the
years 1984. I 985, 1986, the first
half of 1987 and for I 988. She
wears the trademark Gold Key
around her neck, which has
diamonds added when an agent
earns a certain amount in com-
m1ss1ons.
Shipley began her real estate

working on a part-time basis.

morning-we met the caller and
his family at the property they
had inquired about. a beautiful
home with a large lot. pool and
spa. Both the hus band and
wife-a charming young couple
with two beautiful little girl
loved the home and yard. A we
