City Council determined Mon-

Pranksters go
a little too ·tar
Burnt initials in a lawn, toilet paper hanging from
tree branches, gently swaying in the breeze, picnic tables
rounded up and stacked up pyramid-style in the central
quad. All memories from high school days, those pranks
that only high schoolers arc known for.
But~ it seems, a group of perennial teenagers attacked
Newport Harbor High School last week in the
culmination of Spirit Week and virtually ruined it for
everybody.
These weren't just innocent pranks, like stacking picnic
tables or toilet papering, which makes·a little extra work
for the custodial staff; some of it was actual theft. A
decorative fake cannon which formerly sat on someone's
lawn, a'9une buggy, two-horse merry-goround, a boat,
city barricades and signs were among the booty pilfered
from a number of residences and businesses and placed
around Newport Harbor High School. Someone even
broke into cross-town rival Corona del Mar High
Schoors equipment storage area and stole a variety of
spbrts equipment and school banners. The unpardonable
crime was the shredding of an American flag. 1
We all have memories of typical high schQol pranks,
which have gone on ever since there have been high
school students. One member of Anaheim High School's
class of 1947 remembers painting a rival schoors "pct
rock." Another who attended high school in the 1960s
recalled how the football team tied one end of a rope
to a truck bumper and the other end to a. rival school's
mascot, a ~ar, and drove with the bear bumping and
bouncing down the street.
These pranks have always been laughed off as innocent
fun. But the types pulled at Newport Harbor go beyond
spray painting the schoors initials with weed killer in
the rival school's lawn.
School officials and administrators arc not amused.
Principal Dennis Evans called the acts 64pcrverted ideas
of spirit" and threatens recourse if the off ending students
arc caught. The real tragedy here is that it ruins the
chances of future Spirit Weeks for the rest of the students

The demise of Spirit Week is a grim legacy for high
school seniors to pass down to underclassmen.

• A Newport Beach man was
arrested for involuntary man-
slaughter Sunday morning after
waking to find he had apparently
crushed his inf ant daughter to
death while they slept on the
living room couch.
James B. Corbett II I. 2 I , of
1342 W. Balboa Blvd. was
booked into Newport Beach
City Jail, but posted $10,000 bail
later Sunday, said Bob Oakley,
police Jpokespenon.
When Michelle M. Koger; 20,
realized her daughter. 6-week-
old Tyra Corbett was not in her
crib at 7:30 a.m., she went to
wake her boyfriend, who had
fallen asleep in the family living
room. When he woke, the couple
discovered Tyra underneath him
and called paramecia. She was
taken to Hoag Memorial
Hospital Presbyterian, where
she was pronounced dead.

drunken driving was arrested
last Friday night after he lost
control of the car he was driving
northbound on Irvine Boulevard
at 23rd Street, injuring himself

The victim told police that the

his wallet and fled . Police
arrested the suspects near the
intersection of Island and E.
Balboa.

The Sea Kings swept aside
their opponents at the Sea View
League track finals last week.

points at the meet leaving Sad-

the Sea Kangs proved at the meet
that they can consistently score

handed pitching ace Greg Bran-

The Sea Kings bad Brannis on
the ropes as they flllcd the bases
in the game's opening inning.

knockout blow. Brannis escaped

Newport Harbor's loss to its
rivals, Corona del Mar High, at
the Sea View League swim finals
recently was bad enough for the
Sailors' coach Bill Jewell and his
team.
But it•s how the Sailors lost
which will haunt Jewell and his
players over the next year.
Early in the league meet,
Harbor's medley relay team was
disquaJified because one of the
swimmers started too soon
before his teammate had reached
the wall. It cost the Sailors 40
points and possibly the meet as
CdM only won the league title
by a margin of 30 points, 48()..

Jewell. .. It was a big
disappointment. But I told our
team that weve had the best
swim season at Harbor since the
early 1980's. rm real happy with
this team and how much they
have improved. The talent was
there we just needed a good
facility. a booster club and a
good coaching staff to bring it

The Sailors will have a chance
to put the lo at the league finals
behind them when the CJF swim
relays continue tonight at 7 p.m.
The meet is being held at Bel-
mont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

entrenched in the cellar of the
Sea View League with a 1-12
record, did on Friday afternoon
at Harbor's field.
Despite the lopsided outcome.
Newpon Harbor did remain
wi&hin striking range of Univer-
sity until the top of the fifth

However. the roof caved in on
the Sailors in the fifth with

This is the sequel to the
succasf uJ ·wind of a Thousand
Tales.• staged by the group last
year. They are both originals,
penned by SCR literary manager
John Glore. The fint centered
around Kimberly Kay. a girl
who did not believe in f olttalcs.
She is whisted away by the
winds to a. Jud c.alled Nowhere
and is eyewitness to f olktalcs
from around the world.
Kimberly Kay is back in
•Folktales Too,•m which Amer-
ican stories and songs arc used.
She creates them from her
newly-found imagination. We
find her in the attic of her home,
gathering items so that she can
run away. She has had a falling-
out with her fat her and wants
to leave home. Then her friend
Bluster appean and the magical
spell begins to weave.
This play does not contain as
much music as the original, but
the songs are those that might
be recognized, such as the
.. Arkansas Traveler" and 06She-
nandoah... Six folktales arc
interwoven into one plot, that at .
times. might be a little hard to
follow for the younger set.
Parents should be admonished
that children five and under
might not understand and get
restless. The show is only an
hour, blissfully short as the
attention spans of those it is
geared for.
Nicole Parker reprises her role
of Kimberly Kay. There arc 11
cast members playing 23 roles .
Adults are cast as adults, lending
more credibility to their parts.
Those appearing in the play
arc Paul Constantine, Keith
David Dillon, Laura Vance,
Deborah South, Andrea Gaz-
zaniga, Peter Marietta, Jim
Reiss, Justin Morgan, Aram
Delgado and Manf rcd Strom-
beck. Everyone demonstrates
their abilities as quick-change
artists, when they might have to
change from a child, to a prince
to an Indian.

Gulliver's for Mother.'s Day treat

The answer as to where to take
Mom for her special day Sunday
bas arrived. G ullivers , long
known for its fine fare is off cring
a warm atmosphere, friendly
service and an outstanding menu
selection for Mother's Day.
Mom will have a choice of
four delectable items inc~ing
prime ribs of beef. Long Island
duck, lobster tail and fresh king
salmon. All dinners include a
choice of soup or salad, hot
sourdough bread with sweet
butter, spinach soufflc and
creamed corn. There is even a
child's prime rib dinner with all
the trimmings fo r the J 2 and
under set for S 13.50.
The prime rib is f cstooncd
with authentic Yorkshire pud-
ding, au jus and zesty hor crad-
isb. The duck is cooked crispy
and tender with two piquant
sauces, raspberry and peach and
a prune compote: Lobster tail is
served with drawn butter and the
king salmon is the Rolls Royce
of it kind. from Alaska and is
served almost boneless with
Hollandaise sauce and a stuffed
baked potato.

Downey SavingS announces dividend payment
Downey Saving and Loan
Association's Board of Director
today declared a 10-ccnts per
share cash dividend payable on
-May 25 to holders of record o n
May 11.
Gerald H. McQuarrie, c hief
executive officer of Downey
Savings. in making the dividend
announcement, further reported
that net earnings for the first
quarter of 1989 amounted to
$21 ,007,000 or $1.95 per hare.
Of this amount, $10,945,000 or
S 1.02 per share is primarily due
to the cumulative effect resulting
from the adoption of SF AS 96,
which requires a change in the
method by which the company
measures its def erred income tax
liability. For the comparable
quarter of 1988, net earning
were $6, 195,000 or S.58 per
share.
McQuarrie said , "The Asso-
ciation continues to make pro-
gress in its efforts to increa e
operational income. Compared
to las t year's like quarter.
revenues from interest and fee!I
o n lo ans increased 35 percent or
$20 m illion. Combined with
interest on inve tment •
revenues from interest earning
a sets increased a noteworthy 42
percent. Even with a 61 percent
increase in the company's cost
of funds for the period, net
results, without the tax adjust-
ment, were approximately $10
million. This improvement over
1988's like quarter is a step in
the right direction."
New loan volume for the first
three months of 1989 amounted
to S92.4 million, up 43 percent
or S28 million from the like
period of 1988. For the quarter,
the yield on new loans recorded
was approximately I 0.4 percent
compared to 9.5 percent at
March 31 .
.. As expected, loan activity
was curtailed by the increase in
interest rates." said McQuariie.
''The California loan market
could continue to be weak until
such time as overall interest rates
moderate."
At March 31. t otal loan
amounted to S3.0 billion with an
·average yield of 9 .8 percent.
Deposits decreased S 111 .S
million for the quarter. $64.8
million from Butterfield and
$53.7 million from Downey.

high-.cost Butterfield deposits
roll off while not extending its
own renewing certificates for
longer maturities," concluded
McQuarric.
The Association's total depos-

A few years ago, we sent out a holiday card with this verse:
I set children as kites.
You spend a lifetime trying to get them off the ground.
You run with them until you 're breathless. They crash. They
hit the roof. _
You patch, you comfort, adjust and they'll fly .
Finally, they are airborne, they need more string and you
keep letting it out.
But' with each twist of the ball of twine, thtre is a sadness
that goes with joy.
The kite becomes more distant and you know it won' be
.Iona before that beautiful. creature will snap the lifeline that
binds you together and will soar as it is meant to soar, free
and alone.
Only then will you know you have done your job .

It seems so very appropriate for Mother's Day and for
those of us who also will be attending graduations next month,
it has an additional meaning.
I would like to thank my friends and ncigbbon who gave
generously of their time to make this Mother's Day tribute
even more special: Carol Neilsen and Britta, age two. Jane

Failure to observe such dead-
lines do represent a breach of

is an example of gross negligence
on the part of an agent in
performing his obligation to
diligently represent his seller. A

difficult for the listing agent.
Sellers must realize that their
contract with a broker calls for
the brokct to perform certain
functions on the cllcr's behalf.
If the broker docs not perform,
he could be considered in vio-
lation of his fiduciary obligation
to the seller of the home.
