It's great to be pBrt of a communitY like the harbor district with busi- ness booming, real estate jumping and new p e op I e rushing in. Perhaps the greatest transformation is oc the Mesa with values sky-rocketing and transfers so rapid that in many cases places are resold at hii;;her nrices before the preYIOUS deal comes out of escrow. It is true that ridiculous amounts are paid over a few years ago, but like property at the beach, which is keep- ing pace with high rates, ·realty )las been t oo low m this area for many years. NOTICE OF MEETING The effort toward a world peace of permanence ~d _fra- ternity never was greater than today. Bitterly pessmust1c and hopeless is the man who wholly discounts the i;amestness of such an effort. However imperfect the first delicate struc- ture of a world peace organization may be, and h_owever ~!f ish the intent of some of the participants, the wil~ting peace was never greater than now, the impetus never sprang from broader. worldwide sources. The coming international conferences, seeking the road to peace for all men. will have before them the lessons of ear· lier peace plans whose highest value as gwde posts will be their utter failure in our own time. And from a hundred fronts the rolling thunder of bombing, of battle, of dealh and desolation presents the hourly evidence of the terrible neces- sity to find that road. • • The Prince of Peace, who gave His life for a better world. bade men on earth to hope and pray. In this Easter season. the service stars that hang in mrr windows enlarge our hope and increase our prayers that out of this holocaust men of good will and earnest intent will forge the first fragile key to peace on eart?, the crowning hope of all men. "Accentuate the Positive" Among the many prognosticators of future events these days are the slightly balmy crystal gazers, the earnest wish- ful thinkers-and finally the fundamentalists who reach thell' predictions by accentuating the positive--by balancing facts alone. In the latter group many old-timers at the state capital place one Glen Willaman of the California Real Estate asso- ciation, who has been taking polls, querying his fellow men and cross-sectioning the population for years on every !'-lblic Issue raised under the statehouse dome. Here, for the record, are some of his current predictions concerning what will ha~ pen between now and legislative adjournment date-which he declares will be "before May 30": 1be<fiO per cent gas tax boost in all probability is doomed, and the personal income tax will not be repealed. Urban re- dewlopment legislation will be passed. Both residential and commercial rent control will fail of passage. Health insur- ance will be carried to the 1946 ballot either as an initiative or referendum, and the 683-milliO!Hiollar budget will be adopted with few changes. Now only one perplexity of any magnitude remains. If Mr. Wlllaman will ~ help us weed out the rumor~limin ate the negative, so to speak-and glean only the facts, we'll figure out the date of V-E daY; set up the type in 48-point bold and be ready to flash ;m extra even as the official news comes over the wire! ~ ..,, Transportation Conservation Declaring that America's transportation system faces the "severest task in history", Defense Transportation Director Colonel J. M. Johnson said, "It is my belief .that this nation cannot afford the loss of a single motor vehicle-passenger car, bus or truck-which could be saved through an under- standing of proper COllSl:!rva tion methods. "If American transportation is to continue to perform its wartime tasks," he added, "conservation of almost heroic proportions must be achieved .... When the military situation in Europe improves and the United Nations' supply lines are further extended into enemy territory, the demand for motor vehicles, tires and parts will probably increase. "It may truly be· said that the war Jn Europe is being fought on rubber. This means that every motorist and every commercuu vehicle operator must ... nurse along his vehicle as if it were the last available until Victory over Tokyo." Colonel Johnson's warning of a tighter situation in auto- ·motive equipment and his appeal for greater cooservation of existing vehicles were not made for "psychological" reasons. nie tire and parts shortage is very real to most motorists and, as foe new cars, the nation is down to one day's supply ol the peacetime volume. •LAWMAKERS Ill CONGRESS • 87 OON--.&lf MBN PBILLIP8 A Ltttle of Thie under the Act!
