year brought Jack Lindsley.
Cowboy Artist, here to start
work on such a series. That

and which, I am sure, the
public will appreciate.

lationship with Pendergast
was more academic than
real, he said, as Truman re-

how the eastern end of his
county should be run. Hollis
says that Truman was a
splendid judge and had the
confidence of the people;
that Independence was made
up mostly of retired farmers
who believed In their town
and its people and never per-
mitted Kansas City to tell
them what to do. It was this
kind of material from which
Truman has come and his
course In the few months he
has been In the White House
reveals his conservative, pos-
itive character . • •

er and harder to solve her

Many an 85-point veteran on his way home from the f~n
may be singing this song. Having served in the destructive
business of war for several years, he is dreaming of home and
a constructive peacetime business of his own which he plans
to finance through a G.I. loan. The nearness of civilian life
gives his dreams an added glow as they approach possible ful-
fillment.
But the transition of plans from the realm of dreams to
the realm of reality can be a disillusioning experience. In
dreams a restaurant, a store or some other type of business
is easily set up and is immediately successful. But the actual

A -Bigger, Sturdier California
When peace comes, California is not going to drop back to
its pre-war population level , or to its former business and in-
dustrial status. but is destined to become a State of 10,000.-
000 people, with a flourishing industrial development that will
surpass even its phenomenal wartime growth a nd expansion.
The aurvority for that optimistic forecast is Earl Lee
Kelly. chairman of the board of one of the State's leading in-
vestment houses, former bank executive and director of the
State Department of Public Works during the eventful years
when the San Francisco Bay Bridge, the Central Valley Wa-
ter Project and other giant public developments were trans-
lated from blueprints to realities.
"I believe California is going to become the greatest in-
dustrial State .;n the Union," Kelly declared last week, in
charting California's post-war future before the annual con-
vention of the County Treasurers Association. We have nat-
ural resources and cheap power which are proving highly at-
tractive to industry. and we have an ample and highly skilled
labor supply. Our people also have the financial resources
and the daring to build a bigger, sturdier California. I know
of no better investment today than an investment in th~
State's future.
\Ve like that phrase, "a bigger, sturdier California," for it
encompasses in a few words a sound statement of this State's
over-all post-war objective, if our future is to measure up to
our pasL
Freedom's Outposts
Back in-Honolulu after touring air bases in the Pacific,
including the Marianas and Okinawa, General Arnold, com-
mander of United State Army Air F orces, declared that the
future peace of the world-and the fate or mankind-may
well depend on this country being realistic and retaining for
our future defense the island air strips won by our fighting
men at tragic cost.
"My tri11 ." said General Arnold, "has convinced me that
key Islands in the Ma.rshalls, Pala us, Volcanoes, Bonlns and
Ryukyus are vital tQ, Amerlea's strategic defense policy. U
we are to have striking power, our air power must be in a p<>-
sltion to carry our attacks home to the heart of any aggres-
sor who may threaten us in future yean. No longer can we
rely on passive defense and mere bases at home."
For the sake of humanity, as well as the protection of the
United States. General Amold declared it ls absolutely essen-
tial that the Island air bases be retained by this country, and
aMed: "Their use by the United States must be unrestricted.
I have come back convinced that we must have a bridge
across the Pacific."
