Free from the cares of state,
the chief executive. as al-

was at home as much'in the
water as in a boal This is
not his first awearru:ice at
Newport Harbor and his
personal observation of its
possibilities was one of the
reasons for signing the state
park bill at Coro11a clel Mar
and for the stretch between
Newport a n d Huntington
Beaches. That he was
amazed at its rapid and un-
predictable g r o w t h was
shown by his enthusiasm
and bis pleasure at bei:ng in-
vited by Mr. Beek.

Vets and Jobs. Here is a
tale that needs answering by
some m~mber of the Legion
or veterans' association. An
advertisement recently of-
fered a position to veterans
with starting pay of $275 per
month. There were 200 ap-
plications for the · J:lOSition,
but when the veterans
'learned what the salary was,
all turned the job down.
While most of the applicants
were pilots, officers. etc.,
many of them were privates
who did not receive that
much pay. Reason most of
• the men gave was that
workers in war plants were
earning more than that and
they felt they were entitled
to the same pay. The point
Is this: That the period of
readjustment is not far away
and the wage scale is bound
to drop. U returnees are
holding off for large wages,
the time Is coming when
there will be more men than
jobs. which means lower pay.

cussion on the subject.

Vanderbilt, produces a fine
performance. The first part
of the show is spoosored by
the Standard Oil Co. of Cali-
fornia and the audience took
a keen delight in listening to
the announcer and how he
runs the show when it is on
the air. It all goes quite
smoothly, only I do -...-Jsh I
wouldn't get so darn drowsy
when presented with two
hours of classical music.
Which could be wakeful if
they toss in an occasional
"Turkey in the Straw" to
keep a guy awake!

Waves' Third Anniversary
July 30 marked the third anniversary of the establish-
ment of the Women's Reserve, United States Naval Ri!serve
-better known as the WAVFS.
Today 90,000 young women are serving in this branch of
the armed forces and they have thorougt!ly exploded the be-
lief that women are not as capable as men.
Every type of shore job has been successfully filled by
them, and that includes a good many types of work that were
once thought to be beyond the capacity of the fair sex.
The \VA VE.S are now asking for 20.000 more enlistments.
Half of this number are wanted to volunteer for the hospital
corps. The total casualties ¢fered by our Navy thus far
have been very heavy. The wounded must be cared for.
There is no greater service which any woman could render to
her country and to the men who have fought for freedom and
are now fighting for recovery.
The w A VE.S have done, and are doing a grand job. They
may well be proud or their accomplishments in the three
brief years of their existence as a part of the world's greatest
naV)'.
Nothing Like Being Frank
' It appears that at least one G.L I:tas found a way to
quickly acquire the necessary discharge points to bring his
total to the magic 85.
Although he had served four and one half years in the
1\rmy, apparently all on home soil, he was still far shprt of
the required score. But was he downhearted? No! He simply
advertised in the newspaper that he would like to meet a
young widow-with three children.
The object, he said, was-85 points.
Cupid, Stork Going Strong
War workers are not the only ones who have been put-
ting in long hours in the past several years. Statistics reveal
that Dan Cupid and Stanley Stork have also been working
overtime to meet war demands.
In the "I do" department the number of couples "taking
the leap" reached 1,758,000 in 1942-about 400,000 more
than in 1939. Marriages in '43 and '44 declined somewhat as
the eligible young men went to war, but now that many of
them are returning the marriage rate is climbing again and
is reported higher, in some places, than the 1942 record.
In 1943--the latest available figw-5--births in the United
States totaled 2,935,171. This was almost 700,000 higher
than 1939. By 1946 the Nation is expected to have a popula-
tion of 140 million which will be a seven'1Ilillion increase since
the start or the war .
Now all this Cupid-Stork activity is expected to have far-
reaching effects on the nation·s postwar economy. Business-
men look for a tremendi>us building boom stimulated princi-
pally by new families who want homes of their own. Califor-
nia should be the top-ranking state in this development due to
the great population increase in this area, the abundant fin-
ancial resources for home building and of course, the incom-
parable California climate which attract.• tens of thousands
of persons annually from the East and Middle West and
makes them permanent residents.
Predictions are that Dan Cupid and Stanley Stork will
continue to be extremely busy until two or, three years after
the war. Maybe by that time they'll want to retire on a pen-
sion.
Exiling German Officers
The plan to exile about 10,000 German officers of the
army, navy and air force, as reported in a copyright story' of
the New York Times and San Francisc Chronicle, will be a
step in the right direction-if the step is actually taken and
made to stick.
This number will include not only the high ranking gen-
erals and field marshals of Hitler's former war machine, but
also the young staff officers who, if not removed from Ger-
many, would some day fill the shoes ol von Runstedt, Kes-
selring and other Prussian Junkers.
Exiling t he 10,000 will not be a simple matter, however.
And even more difficult will be the problem of keeping them
effectively exiled-in other words, to prevent them from con-
tacting sympathizers within the Rekh and plotting ways of
ttbuilding German military might.
According to the report, the original plan considered was
to send them all to British Honduras or the Falkland Islands.
Now It is proposed to break them up into small groups and
disperse them throughout this country and Its possessions,
the British Empire and Soviet Russia.
Where they could be located-in the United States without
Violent public opposition is a mystery, wtless It be In the
middle of the Mojave Desert. And we doo't Imagine the Brit-
ish or Russians would welcome them either. What Is more,
