HomeMy WebLinkAbout1945-08-22 - Newport Balboa News Times• • -• 111 SAND CRAB ., SAM - WATllR, HAl!llOB. Two vital post war projects are facing the citizens ot Newport Bea<;h and Orange County-MW!> water and harbor development. It is most gratifying to note that the Chamber of Commerce bas finally decided to remove its restrlct!oos on bow to get Metropolitan water, t h u s leaving the city council with. a free· hand and that group Monday promptly accepted the decision by favoring juncture with the South Coast District and calling a special bond election to raise funds. Despite water wells proponents, it is decidedly Important that we go after MWD water, else .we find ourselves without it and this fast growing community sty- mied in its progress. + + + Now As to Harbor. It is well known that the Rivers and Harbors committee of congress is strongly in favor of matching funds in harbor work, especially in this area. This has long been its atti- tude and while other means may be found to do away with that phase, still it is appe.rent that In such event a county bond issue is neces- • sary to raise Its half ot the $514.000. It is, therefor, a matter of common sense to remain on friendly terms with the entire c 0 u n tr· which is deeply inte.rested ~ Metropolitan water, by vot- 1-ing to come into their water setup. Newport Beach has been kicking the MWD pnr ject around for 15 years; in the last four years its leaders have tried to get together; today they have finally done so. + + + Let Us Pray. Sunday was a day of prayer and thanks for · peace. Rev. Perry Schrock gave his congrega- tion the following prayer: Almighty God, in whose hands are all the nations of the earth. we humbly thank Thee that the end ?--of the war has come. May the spirit of pea<J> sup. plant the spirit of war. Grant to all peoples and races that they may feel their kinship with each other because they are all children of the same eter- nal Father. Free them from jealousy, hatred or selfish ambition. Awaken in them the spirit of jus- tice. fraternity and con-rord. Teach them how to cooperate in the building of a better world. Forgive thine erring children and hasten the day when there shall be peace on earth be- cause there is good will among men. + + + British WayS-On the chance of putting my neck out and getting rubbed down by many local folks. am still going to say what I think about England's plans to scale its debts to the U. S. in half. pay 50 cents on the re- maining dollar. borrow it from Uncle Sam and give him I.O.U.'s for the balance. SUch nerve could only come from the big shots in Lon- don, which is one of the rea- sons why many G.I.'s who spent any time in England were fed up with their super- iority. The English are good ·fighters, are splendid on keeping their chin up in their days of suffering, which no doubt is why they , feel the U. S. owes them a debt ot gratitu.i.,._payment for which is to be made In bard dollars. + + + Cbbag Barbor. Next comes a task of years. not months -the cleansing of a nation corrupted and debased. But fin- ally, distant as the day may be, Japan will of necessity return to the council table of the family of nations. Countless thousands have died needlessly; a song of sad- ness and sorrow still entwines the earth. We have reason to be bitter, yet one day we must forgive or at least forget. We must remember the spirit of the prayer written by St. Francis of Assisi more than seven hundred years ago: ' "Lord, make me '}!! instrument of Thy peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. "O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving, that we receive. It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned It is in dying, that we are born to eternal life." On Again, Off Again 11lt's PEA.CE!" port!' Later: "False report, Berne has received no official com- munication from Japan!'' "Tokyo radio has just announced that Allied tenns have beell accepted." Hours later: "No official Japanese communication has been received in Washington." Women: "I can't stand it any longer. Why do we let them do this?" Men: "Bomb the hell out of them. Maybe they'll get the idea. Blow them off the face of the earth." And finally-finally-it came; it was true; it was done. If you are still angry, the Press. the Radio, and the White House make this plea: "It has happened in every major PEf\CE announcement since wars were begun. PEACE is beautiful and wonderful, but it is a time of madness, too. At least we did our best for you."
