Newport I Harbor was honored the put few days by the pres- ence of two ot Its friends-- Barry Sheppard and John Pbllllpo, coogressmen extra· ordinary. Harry addressed a packed house of dty and county leaders last Friday and John welcomed a simi- lar group Monday. Th<,JSe of us who "knew them when" noted happily the stature of the men and the swiftness w I t h· w h i ch t he y have climbed to eminence in Washington. a dty of many great personalities. In the years that "Shep." has been In congress, he has developed Into one of the best legisla- tor.s in the nation's capital and by study and hard work achieved a pinnacle that places him in an enviable po- sition in his country's affairs. And despite his toil and his travels he keeps himself fit and trim and full of the en- ergy so essential to his job. Mr. Phillips, though older in years and younger as a congressman, is looking the picture of health and has al- ready gained several impor- tant committees, due to his ability, his pleasant, unas- suming manner and his p.- pacity for labor. Both gen- tlemen are warm friends of Newport Harbor. an inval- uable asset at the seat of govei;runenl Gordon Rich- mond brought Mr. Phillips here to talk about reconver- sion problems, post .w a r plans, atomic bombs, etc. Mr. Sheppard says we can- not do enough for the re- tilrnlng soldier; Mr. Phillips declares that until something turns up for him he is better In the service. Both are cor- rect, and both are in a posi- tiori to help the returnee and see that industry is speeded up rapidly. enough to absorb him into civilian life. + + .. They Come Ben. Mr. Richmond, who is chairman ot the county Republican Central committee, pointed out that all the important of- ficials head tor Newport Hartx>r when they come into the county, and that it yau want to meet them you must come. He was seconded in his remarks by Clyde Wat- son. The fine Italian hand of Harry Welch is seen in all these goings on. Mr. Phil- lips was sitting with his frlends from different parts of the county and, therefore, at once felt at home. The same was true of Mr. She1>- pard. Some of his old friends were there to greet him. How did they get there? Well, Mr. Welch went out of his way to bring them to the meetings. Simple, it you konw how! • • • Art McBride. When Mac first came to Orange county from Iowa some 15 years ago he came to Newport. Beach to beCome Identified with the old Newport News, but de- cided he wanted to go inland. Mac had been head of the riewspaper association, had taken an active interest in county affairs and was not baclcwa.rd in telling his com- munity what was good for It. He had a trenchant pen and a habit of making It talk with force and Insistence. When the U. S. Government turned off the great Lend- Lease spigot la5t week. and announced that in its place straight loans will be made to war-stricken Allied countries for purchase of American goods, Oliver Lyttleton made a statement in the British House of Commons: "U you wish to obtain assistance from the United States," declared this Conservative and former president of the Brit- ish Board of Trade, "you must be careful about the nasty things you say about private enterprise that will affront American public opinion." This warning "brougfit loud laughter from the Labor side of the House"! On the same day, in Washington, D. C .. Leo J. Crowley, head of the Foreign Economic Administration, was asked what guarantees the United States has which might insure repayment of foreign loans. Said he: "I don't know of anything to guarantee they'll repay us. The question of how we will settle debts is ooe for the State department." It appears to us that the question of loan security is of direct and very serious concern to-the American public, as Mr. Lyttleton so shrewdly discerns, and not merely a U. S. State Department problem. Foreign loans will be made from money earned and credit created. under the free enterprise system. by the debt-laden, tax-oppressed American people. It will be the American people's loss, not the State Depart- ment's, if the "collateral" of a British economy gone social- istic proves worthless. Mr. Lyttleton might have added another warning to the Labor side of the House: It isn't the smartest thing in the world to loose a sney>ring laugh at the banker when yoa're hat-in-hand for a loan!
