Then ter's office reached a new high the Community Cbeet to tab ~ European waters where he was in residents of the island asked sus- pension of all permits for con- struction of piers on public beaches, and "turthennore that no more pennits be granted until the entire subject of pjers be studied with due consideration to the in- terests of all property owners.'' The petition asked the matter be referred to the city planning com- mission and set for hearing, with a IO-day advance notice to be mailed to all residents of Balboa Island. P1reworla This set off the fireworks. A spokesman for the bay front Pf'O"' perty owners who were pre-tty well concentrated in a comer of the council chamber suggested that the matter be referred to the city planning commission. as he said it is unfair to the buyen ol this property to deny them right to build piers when they pur- chased that property undentand- ing they could do so. He sur gested all pier con.stniction In th& dt}' be included. This brought instant protest,. and -disagreement from the coun- cjl, as, it wu pointed out, a com- promise made between variouS' factions' in 194-0 allocated one pier to each two lots when it was found that p~vlously some piers were rising on each lot adjoining. An argument arose o.ver the percentage or bay front occupied by piers, one claiming seven per cent, another 30 per cent. Inter- polations from members of the council became less frequent with rising tempo or the discussion be- tween memberao of the aud.Jence. Counc1lman Bob Allen, a TM:i - dent of the island, offered" a mo-: lion that all future permits for pier construction be withheld pending further study by the coun- cil. Before the motion had time for further consideration, someone asked how many piers there were, how many had been authorized., and how many could still be built, (Continued on Page Ftve) 'Showboat' Noise Was Apparently Illegal Anyway Tw-o are aebeduled tor Ne"'Port they were terrifically b\Uly, but 1 with all working to facilitate the after thia yeu'a war a..t: cam-the tnvuton of D-Day. The ending of the war does not mean that there '0ll be no further need for our dollars to help clean up the job. Many billions more will have to be spent in supplying our armies of occupation, bringing millions of men home and caring for our wounded. No less important is the need for continued investment in Victory Bonds as a protection against inflation. Victory has not eliminated the danger of runaway prices but has in· creased it. Remember, the most serious inflation occurred not during, but after, the last war. Price ceilings simply can't be maintained if we use our current earnings or savings to bid for scarce goods. California's record of Bond buying has been a good one. Let's maintain it! The fact that our statewide branch bank· Ing system alone has sold approximately $2,300.000,000 in War Bonds is eloquent evidence of the support Californians have given Uncle Sam. This figure, incidentally, has not been exceeded by any other single organization. So, keep right on saving and buying Victory Bonds. If you do, you won't have to fear the proverbial wolf at the door. You can make him a pet. The Atomic Rage The idea of using atoms in bombs proved very effective in ending the war. If atoms can be applied to peacetime products it will be so much the better. But it seems to us that eventually we're going to have trouble. What are we going to do, for instance, when junior wants an atom smasher of his own, which might not only smash atoms, but smash junior, too-to say nothing of the rest of the family? · · -Oh, well, progress is not without its little difficulties. Time for School! The easy-going vacation days are fast running out for thousands of California youngsters.' Their inevitable date with the school bell and the classroom is just around the conier. The three R's of SUJllr(ler time-riding, romping and recreation-must yield somewhat to the traditional three R's of learning. But school does not deprive our boys and girls of a reasonable time for romping and recreation-these are just as essential as their education. And as for riding, tens of thousands of modem boys and girls enjoy buy trans- portation to and from school. Not only has tile old tinfe "hike to school" been just about eliminated, but present day high· way transportation has brought the school room within reach of California students wherever they live. In a very real sense our modem school system rests on the rolling wheels of motor carriers for they not only transport students but haul in ·the books, paper and other equipment needed for educational purposes. especially in the 1,800 or more California communities served only by high· way transportation. But whether youngsters ride or walk to school we're afraid that the. beginning of a new term will have its usual strange effect: Little Johnny who got up at 6 a. m. to go fishing In vacation time will struggle out of bed an hour or two later on school mornings still feeling "awful tired." 25 Years of Woman's Suffrage Just a quarter of a century ago the women of America "arrived" politically. Their right to vote became effective nationally on August 26, 1920. This was the climax ot a stxuggle that began before the last century was half over. Among the women who became famous for their un- ceasing efforts to obtain equal voting privileges for the fair sex was that grand old warrior Susan B. Anthony. Today ·women vote without giving the matter a sei:ond thought. But in 1872 when Susan Anthony cast a ballot . in the pres;. dential election she was arrested and fined for her disregard ot the law.
