thing about it. It's hard to
get people out to meetings
and those that come rarely

meantitne the town is grow-
ing, one might say, almost
like Topsy, and many prob-
lems confront the sincere

stanCes, favor annexing t.er-
ritory to 15th street. havmg

master of ceremonies at the "All-America Day" rally for ra-
cial tolerance at the Santa
Ana bowl Saturday afternoon.

highlighted by the spectacular en-
trance ol General Joseph W.
(Vmegar Joe) Stilwell in an open
touring car driven by a Japanese-
American and fl ying the four-sm
general's fiag. He received a tre-

civic and veterans' organizations
were represented.
The general was introduced by
\VilJ Rogers, jr., who coocluded
his introductory remarks with the
statement : ... I! in the next ten

due to General Stilwell."
The general's brief address
stressed the need for civic unity
on the matter of racial tolerance.
and emphasized the part that Jap-
anese·Americans such as Sgt. Ma-

Equal Production '
Often those who have the most, do the most kicking. Ap-
parently that is as true of nations as of individuals. The up-
roar in this conntry over prices, wages, production, purchas-
ing power a~ living standards. ignores the great advantages
we enJ<>y.
The only possible way of measuring America's material
abundance is by citing undramatic figures. Although our
country includes about seven per cent of the world's land
area more than two-thirds of the world's population, it has,
for example, been producing and using more than two-thirds
of the world's petroleum and the world's motor vehicles, and
conswning more than one-half of the werld's rubber supply.
Our per capita consumption of oil is thirty times the aver-
age of the rest of the world. The energy content of this oil is
equivalent to the work of forty slaves for every individual in
the United States-and it is in such convenient and concen-
trated form that no number of slaves-or of borses--could
do what it does for the average American, particularly in
the field of transportation.
If we do not get the things that the optimists prophesy
in the postwar era, it will be no one's fault but our own. The
great benefits derived by all the people from petroleum were
not brought about simply because the oil was in the ground.
They were brought about because thousands of persons
worked hard, from management down to the lowliest roust-
about
The tragic fact is that in the niidst of our abundance, we
seem to have forgotten that it did not come easily. Oil is but
one illustration. In proportion, as we kill incentive, limit pro-
duction, and destroy profit we will lose our abundance.
