pital standing on the bill
overlooking Newport Bay?
Can't you picture your own
good health when arrayed
against the patients who_
must use that institution?
Isn't it a wonderful thought
to feel that you had a part

and suffering some hapless
human? What profit one to
gain great riches, which you
can't take with you, if you
cannot permit a trickle of
gold to seep into a ftmd to
benefit mankind! As always
those In moderate circum-
stances do their utmost to
help a worthy cause; is It
asking too much for those
above and beyond the pale of
duty, to make deductible
from income taxes a tithe of
such income and point with
pride to an accomplishment
sorely needed?

Meat Prices. Back from a
week in the San Joaquin Val-
ley. . . . Was on my usual
prowl for hard-~get it.ems
and found that meat prices
are higher up there than
home. The range is from 10
to 15%; groceries, hqwever,
about the same. Stopped one
night at San Luis Obispo §(Id
found the store fl1ll"of mar-
garine and salad dressings.
When we came back to our
cabin from dinner found a
note written by Geo. Good-
rich Bassett and just across
the court were Mr. and Mrs.
B. enroute home from San
Francisco, where they said
living was higher than a cat's
back. but that middle Cali-
fornia and in the smaller
towns costs weren't so high.

Margaret Hiiiungame. In-
tbe early thirties and late
twenties when Newport-Bal-
boa was developing, no one
person left more of an im-
press on her time than Mar-
garet Burlingame. who. I
learned. passed on, during
my absence. Mrs. Burlin-
game. whose husband, R. G ..
built the Rendezvous and
Balboa Theater. took an ac-
tive and aggressive interest
in civic affairs. She organ-
ized the old Civic League,
fought for a public library.
importuned the city coun-
cil for improvements and
was a forceful element in the
growth of the community.
She was one of the organ-
izers of the local Christian
Science Church, its First
Reader for many years and
a Practitioner for a long time
in Santa· Ana. In the last
year or so the Burlingames
have been living a t Costa
Mesa. Her passing at 63 will
be mourned by many old
timers who knew her as a
woman of keen intellect and
compelling personality. • • •

maid employed by Mr. and Mrs.
James Rogers, 1300 West Bay aYe-
nue, Newport Beach. was booked
at the county jail Monday morn-
ing on suspicion or grand theft.
Police reported they had found
a considerable number of valu-
ables, said to beJong to the Rog-
ers, under the bed 1n the maid's
room.
Among them. police aald, was a
sUver fox fur valued at $1000 ; a
llilk nightgown, pair of sboeo. a
ailver Ice bucket and tongs and
a pair of pearl combs valued at
$25.
Police were called lnto the case,
they said, when the Rocers notic-
ed that their maid wu acting sus-
piciously.
At the time the articles were
found the ma Id was recei\.i ng
treatment for a sprained. ankle at
the office of a local physician.
When she returned, the police
report disclosed. she was confront-
ed with the loot and her reply
in answer to a question by patrol-
man H. L. Cottle was, ''I was only
pretending". She gave no further
explanation but admitted to wear-
ing some of the articles around
the houae and to have worn the
fur coat out once.
She then asked permission to
go to the bathroom where she
turned on the faucet noisily and
made her escape by crawling out
the window into the yard. On
opening the gate, however, she
ran into the arms of patrolman L.
V. Cornecl.
"Oh, pardon me!" •he said, but
Corned held her until other of-
ficers arrived and she wu taken
to the Newport Beach police sta-
tion and booked for grand theft.
She wu then taken to the district
attorney's office at Santa Ana
where the Rogers flied a com-
plaint of grand theft, and is now
at the county jail.

Between $180 and $200 was
taken by a holdup man from
Robert Tuck of 6700 Seashore
drive, Newport Beach, shortly
after 4 o'clock Sunday morning
as he stepped out of his auto near
his home, according to a report
fited with the Newpor t Harbor
district poUce on Monday.
The po11ce were also called upon
to solve several other types of
theft wh.ich were reported as
committed over the weekend.
The Smoke House at 109 P alm
avenue, Balboa. reported the
juvenile theft of a cash register
containing $15 from their counter .
Two boys are known to have taken
the cash-box.

Do You Want to Die Too Soon?
For their own protection and for the safety of others who
use the thoroughfare, motorists who are continuing to make
West Central avenue from 30th street east to the Bank of
America building a speedway, should slacken up their speeds
and should also cease trying to pass other automobiles on
this road especially where the street narrows near the fire
house in the 2800 block.
The area is poorly lighted and It is difficult for motorists
travelling ahead to gauge whether there is traffic following
behind. E..pecially Is this noticeable on misty nights.
There was an accident on the avenue on Saturday night
simply because the driver ahead did not see the driver behind
and swerved to the left to tum into a lane. The cars side-
swiped, and one of them rammed into the parked automobile
.of former City Engineer ruchard L. Patterson, damaging the
·front of it.
Had not Patterson's machine been standing there, there
lls a certainty that the runaway machine would have jumped
the curb and might have knocked down someone who was
, walking on the sidewalk near the Bay Electric c_ompany.
Mr. Patterson told a representative of the News-Times
that he bad warned city authorities about the habit of motor-
. lsts using West Central avenue as a speeedway, but that no
one had seen fit to do anything about stopping the practice.
It Isn't the first time that an accident has happened on
this thoroughfare, and it probably will not be the last, unless
motorists slacken their speeds and use extreme caution in try-
ing to pass other cars enroute ahead. One ol these days
someone Is going to be killed-It might be YOU. Think it
over, brother. That itchy foot can prevent it or it can make
It come true!
