toastmaster, but had to be in
New York. These and many
.other disapointments are but
one of the many dolorous af-
fairs that perform-unexpect·
edly. So the praise be-
stowed on Welch by Pres.
Jim Barrett and Toastmas-
ter Walt Longmoor, clever
and adaptable himself, were
wholly warranted.

Newport Harbor Yacht club, the
speaker said that no one should
fear the future.

time he "''as discharged. During
that time he served overseas as
an Aerial Photographer-Gunner in
the 8th Air Force. H e participated
in the European Air Offensive,
earning four ba ttle stan, the Dis-
tinguished Flying Cross and the
Air Medal with three clusters.
At the present time, Sgt. Doyle
is assigned to duties in the Pro-
cessing (Enlisted Men) Section of
the 4-0lst AAF Base at Hamilton
Field. He recently received orders
transferring him to the 97th Bom-
bardment Group at Salina, lta n-
sas, as a Aerial Photographer-
Gunner. He will leave sometime
within the next few weeks.
Sgt. Doyle's wife resides at the
above address and will join her
husband in Salina as soon as pos-
sible.
Ho"'·ever. this story is not the
dynamite kind. It's a story about
an unsung hero--an ordinary pa-
trolman .,.,·ho has been ar ound the
\\'Orld and knows a lot about it.
A policeman d oesn't have . to be
a \VOr ld-beater a t capturing bur-
glars and crooks to be an unsung
hero. He can Ix-just an ordinary
fell ow like Jack Summers.
Summers '-"'as born . in London,
England, some 64 years ago. He'll
be 65 years old "'·hen he r etires
next J a nuary from the Newport
BC'ach police dc>partment. He will
then have served as a policeman
for this city' 18 years a nd nine
months.
There's nothing extraordinary
about a man born in London or
having ser ved 18 years and nine
months on a police force. True.
But we think the Jack Summers
has a story and so we start dig-
ging the facts out of him and
here's "'hat we get: '
H elped Lay Cables
Summers w~ a seaman in the
British Royal Navy when the
United States Government sought
technical aid in the 1aying of the
Phillipine cable. When the time
came for the laying of the cable
Summers was one of the seaman
who aided the work. The cable
was laid in 1900.
After receiving his honorable
discharge from the Royal Navy,
Sumers' got a job with the U. S .
Army Engineer corps in the Phil-
ippine area and later he \Vas given
voyage to the United States and
San Fra nc isco. ,
When he heard that the USS
Sheridan might be the ship that
might be used in laying the cable
to Alaska, he went to Seattle and
enlisted into the American navy
and rel&ted his past experience in
cable-laying work. So 'he w a 1

work on that cable.
After serving his hitch in the
navy, Summers went to work in
the merchant marine and took a
trip to foreign parts. After eight
years of seeing a large part of the
world as a merchant ltlFiQer,
Summers quit the sea in· SS. n
Francisco, in 1908. •
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Edick and

The local family Visited Mrs. Hine-
sly's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs.
H . C. Wilshire.
Recent house guests of Mr. and

at Redondo Beach. Then in 1919 Parrish and children of Ft. Worth,

sane· man threatined tlie latter.
Then there was the time when

trouble getting a handcuffed in-
sane man to go to the county hos-
pita1.
"They called me into the case,
and I went to where the demented
man was," Summers recalled.

be safe from them.
"Meantime, I told him, I'll see

to the hospital."
"After we got there," Summers
said, "the guy refused to move
out of Ute machine. So I used
psychology again. I told him to
staY where he wu; that there
some pretty nursef In the hoopi-
tal and that I wanted to get there
first."
Summon grinned 1heeplohly,
then added, With a twinkle in his
eyes, "When the inaane man heard
that, he threw me out of the car
and beat It In the boopltal and I
