You pick up tlie ~ ceiver and out of the past romes a voice-that of ,Mar- shall Tate, former News-nmes advertising man1 still a Balboa Island home owner, home with his better half from Honolulu where hj! has been since 1940 on thel Star Bulletin. ''The Islands have been good to me.': he says, "but Newport Harbor look$ better and the growth has been amazing here. I'm frank to admit that I never • believed the boost stories you printed, Sam. but t;11e palm is ajl yours and we in- tend to keep our Balboa Isl- and spot as a refuge to eventually ocupy." Tate says the unions have completely revolutioni7.ed H aw a i i - docks, longshoremen, planta- tfons and even the depart- ment stores are under un- ion rule. During the strike Xmas mdse was tied up on the San Francisco wharves and never did arrive in time tot the holidays. Development. On all sides building is going forward and materials are becoming mcreasingly available. Will there be a slump? people ask. As <>Pe well known lumberman said today such a thing seems hardly pos- sible. Suppose supplies did drop 15 or 20 % , you still have high wages with which to contend. and the only thing that could happen in that instance is for labor to Increase production, which would give us homes more rapidly. As it is now the ~ of an average house runs from 12 to 15 dollars per square foot, according to what you place therein. And It will take about two years to catch up with the short- age,. which S<>me claim re- quires a million residences to overcome. Federal . Payroll Heard Sena tor Robin.sOn demand an audit of U. S. records from 1932 to 1946, which he says would cost $10,000,000, and which he declares is good business when new management comes in; that ~on employes should be dropped from the payroll. Suppose the money is spent for the audit, then what? happens to most of the in- vestig atio n s that are started? You just create more jobs and the public pays and pays. Misplaced Credit. Charley TeWinkle said it was a bust to give the Board of Super- visors. credit for cleating the parking on the Mesa right- of-way of weeds and under- brush. The nial credit goes to the state highway depart- ment and Engineer Cortel- you. If the supervisors want to do something for the Mesa, he continued, they could keep their word and finish their job of improving the park in the · vic\nity of the Legion hall. That Overhead. Glad to give Hig hway Chief Cortel- you due credit, but what about a light below The Arches underpass at the turn that leads up the ramp to Newport Beach. Some day, Mister. a bad accident will happen there, and then we will get the illumination. Come on. fellow. dont be stubbmn. just because you Pt razzed! Courteous Cops. Two young gentlemen in a pqiice car paid me a nice visit 1the 1 other morning when I wru; '' burning brush after 9 o'clock. Told me about the regulations and said all fires must not be started before 6 a. m. and doused by 9. Can dn. · l'oi _,. Publlsber. Frank H.
