Sea Scouts
Rescue Ship
Off Laguna
Laguna Beach Sea Scouts were
responsible for the rescue _or a
power c:rui,ser stranded 20 yards
off a reef near Laguna on Sat\D"·
day. .
While proceeding down the coast
on a shake down cruise, Sea Scout
lookouts observed distress signals
from a small power cruiser dan-
gerously near the reef off Shaw's
Cove. Course was immediately
altered and the S.S.S . Cormorant,
the 36-foot LCVP Sea Scout Ship,
stood in to effect a rescue.
The stranded power cruiser was
ta ken in tow a scant 20 yards otf
the reef. Its plight was serious as
ther e \\'as no anchor aboard. After
towing the stranded cruiser out
into safe r water the Sea Scouts
brought the vessel alongside and
transferred two women and two
small children aboard the S . S . S.
, Cormorant. '[\\'O men were left
aboard to handle the tow line and
the Cormorant then stood up the
coast a t a speed of 8 knOts toward
Ne'-'"po•t Harbor.
Laguna Beach police had tele-
phoned the Coast Guard regarding
the stranded vessel just prior to
the timely arrival of the Sea Scout
Ship. 'fie Coast Guard GG50032
answered the call, hove to alorig-
side the Cormorant and trans-
ferred the women and children
aboard. The tow was then trans-
ferred also.
The crew of the Cormorant con-
sisted of Jack Spence. Lynn Muir,
Milton Henry, Jimmy Skillins-s1 Russel Landreth. Jimmy Landreth,
David Stephens, and Crew Leader

Councilmen for
Fire Protection
The harbor comm.ittee of the
ctty Council was di~ted by:' the
council 1'1onday night to investi-
gate the need for a tire boat
with m{lnpower to act in case of
a grave ~ergency here.
The action was taken after the
municJpal fathers listened to a
letter from the Commercial Fish·
ermen's Cooperative association,
which said the 4000 boate rest-
ing In the harbor needed better
fire protection.
The association also recom-
mended that the fire boat and
manpower be placed under the
jurisdiction of the Newport Beach
Fire department.

For Lido Center
Newport Bench City Council on
Monday deferred for two weeks
action on the application of P . A.
P almer of Lido Properties, Inc.,
who proposes operation for a tram-
way car connecting Balboa Island
and Lido shopping center during
summer months.
City Atty. Roland' Thompson
suggested that the matter be
tabled for that perio:d until he
had a chanCe to read up the state
law regarding the opera tion of
tram"•ays \vithin a municipality.
He wanted to see if a franchise
would be required even for a brief
period of the year,
He expressed his personal opin-
ion, ho\vever, that It is possible
that the councilmen could ap-
prove operation of such a line to
aid shoppers.

Edison Will Move
Poles For Widening
Of Central A venue
If the Paci!ic Electric Railway
company will agree to the imme-
diate removal ot its poles on the
avenue, the city of Newport
Beach can begin the widening of
Central avenue and Coast boule-
vard from 19th street to McFad·
den Place.
ntls information was disclosed
at the meeting of the Newport
Beach Oty Council Monday night
after Ralph Maskey of the high-
way committee of the chamber of
commerce revealed that the Edi-
son company had agreed to re-
move its poles from the avenue
for the widening pro~t.
In order to go ahead with the
project, pending approval by the
railway company, the council a~
proved ·a plan to appropriate
$2()(X) from the general funds to
set up curbs for the replacement
of the poles as an emergency
measure.

Letters have been mailed by
the campaign committee of the
Santa Ana Community Hospital
seeking subscriptions in the New-
port Harbor area for their drive
to attain $300,000 necessary to the
bui1ding of an addition to the
present hospital. · '
'"The demand for additional hos--
pilal bed space and added modern
equipment far exceeds the pres-
ent, or planned, total facilities in
Orange county," the communica-
tion states in part.
"The . campaign for $300,000 to
construct a 50-bed addition to the
Community hospital, operating
since 190~; is now being conducted
by over 400 civic leaders who are
aware of ~he critic8.I need for addi-
tional hospital facilities."

automobile was struck by one

trander and W. J. Jackson tried
the door of the camera shop at
4 :30 a. m. February 4th, every-
thing was all right.
From the Island, the merchant
patrolmen rode their machine to
Corona del Mar, where they in·
spected. 18 stores and then they
returned. to Newport Beach, by
way of the Miracle Mile, where
they inspected 13 other member
shops.
Having completed this round,
the patrolmen, the official said,
visited the police station, and after
repcrting 'in' were about to make
anpther tour of the Island, when,
the official continued. they were
invited to accompany a policeman
who was about to go to the Isla nd
on inspection.
"'Our patrolmen parked the mer-

station and got into the police
car and rode with the poliCeman

second trip that at approximately
5:40 a. m. our patrolmen notired

About this time next year California will be getting knee
deep into the centennial celebrations commemorating the
early days of our state.
The lOOth anniversary of the. discovery of gold at Sutler's
Mill-the most dynamic event in all California history-is
now less than a year away for it occurred on January 24,
1848.
