cent ship acquired frqm the U. S.
Navy. The vessel is only two years

ence. She \\'as christened as the

pated in the attack on Ok in8.wa.
The Mellena was ·1oaned to the
Academy following the end of the
war and is now a component part
of the California Maritime Acad-
emy.

Some labor leaders often point out that certain corpora-
tions earn many millions of dolliµ"s . The amount looks big
until compared to the stockholders' investments in those cor-
porations. Then it looks entirely different.
·During the period when the New Deal was riding rough
shod over American businessmen they were hesitant about
speaking up for fear that further adverse legislation would be
the result. The time has come. however, f~r business leaders
to present their case intelligently to the public.

The General Talks Straight
If Gene ral George C. Marshall, the new secretary ot
state, can .get along half as well with foreign diplomats and
the officials of his own department as he did with newsmen
when he anived back in Washington to take his new post he
should be most successful indeed.
Political reporters, long . accustomed to daily doses of
double talk from leading Capital figures, gasped in astonish-
ment when General Marshall, who has been rumored as a
presidential or vice-presidential candidate, talked to them-in
unequivocal language about his political future.
Reportorial ears sharpened when he said, "I will never be-
come involved in political matters and iherefore I cannot be
considered a candidate for political office." But they must
have popped when he went on, '-'The popular conception that
no matter what the man sa:;s he can be drafted as a candi-
date for some political office would be without force or effect
with regard to me. I never could be drafted."
Probably not since the day when General Sherman said
in regard to the presidency: "I will not accept if nominated,
and \\ill not serve if elected." has any An'!E!"rican stated his
political position so clearly as did the new boss of the state
department.
General Marshall may have set a precedent for an era of
straight talking in Washington, and his forthrightness
should help to further eliminate the diplomatic evasiveness
in international dealings. At lea.3t, his candor has already
woi:i him the enthusiastic backing of both major parties and
it Is bound to enhance his stature in the eyes of foreign states-
men.
Both America and the rest of the world have great need of
men who say what they mean and mean what they say.

ed for about $37,500,000,000. That
used to be considered a lot of
mcney. That amount Is FOUR
TIMES the figure for 1939, and
almoot THREE TIMES the
amount for 1940. Think that one
over. 1940 was a war year; Win-
e ton Churchill was the "man of
the year;" Denmark and Norway
had fallen; the blitz; the war was
coming, and we knew it. So the
President asked for $13,.200,000,-
000. 6 % billions covered all the
regular departments. 1.6 billions
for defense. 21> BILLIONS FOR
RELIEF. That was a n interest-
ing item , as late as 1940.
You as taxpayers are entitled to
know why the budget has jumped
from 13 billions to 351n billions in
8 years, and why it is the latter
amount two years after the war
has endod.
I haven't space to discuss it
now, but I 'll give you one hint.
I just-discovered this one: OPA
is a memory to you, but there are
still 15,500 employees on the pay-
roll, many of them with ~ery
little to do. There are still 22 pub-
licity m en, not even in the rent
control sections.
So whe n the various depart-
m e nts of the government begin to
work on you to \vrite your Con-
r--gressman and tell him that some
service will be wrecked if the
requested appropriation is cut as
much as one dollar, just smile a
little and say that the present
majority in the Congress has no
intention .o( handicapping essen-
t1a1 services, but that you know
there are i terns you can get along
without, and gladly.
