Attended a n-;;ru.military wedding at Beverly Hills Community Presbyterian church Satur· day and got quite a bang how such affairs are put on. My niece, Bel:ty Bartlett .DaSchlell, made a slow-step down the lorig aisle on the arm of her dad, and was re- ceived by the eager and wide-eyed groom-to-be, Ma- rine Major Charles Esterline. Hl$ brother, John, who flew from F1orida to be best man, was as nervous as a cat, but delivered the young man to the altar on time. Rev. Wil- liam E. Roberts, a Spanish.. American vet, who is com- pleting nearly a half century of ministry, tied the knot in a double ring ceremony, the bridegroom using a ring by his grandfather. This was the fourth wedding that day for the prelate and at the close of the ceremony he leaned over to the groom and asked: "Now. what do you do?" Came the embrace. Sure the bride looked sweet-she had the looks t l start with, and the femin- ine part of the large, audi- ence dabbed their eyes with filmy hankies. te bride's mother-sat in sol ry splen- dor until her hu by handed over the young woman to the young man. Marine pho- tographers were dashing all over the place and it re- minded one of a war-time ship launching at the harbor with flash-bulbs popping ever and anon. At the re- ception the couple cut the cake with his sword, which be bad carried in many Pa- cific campaigns, especially at Iwo Jima. There were all ·kinds of colonels and other officers. all of whom came from their base near Bar- stow, where the young folks will make thdr home. One lady remarked after the wedding that it was so much better to have a home or church wedding than to elope. as it was something the bride would remember all her life. + + + Wlnlfred Yoong. Thingi; looked blllck 'Thursday night when the city planning com- mission took cognizanCe of some 00 persons, most of them out- siders, and their opposition to the building of a car parking lot in front of the residential structures of the beach area. Startled by the entourage as they had not received advance notice from the city council that the matter ·had been referred. to them, the city planning commis- sion handled the proposition with dexterity and diplomacy. FORGIT TALll.S As they could not legally act on the matter from an auto park- ing lot deal, they did the next best and only thing they could do recommended to the city council, in the form ot a resolution, that all ocean frontage be held for re- creational purposes. only. It looked mighty dismal for the Newport Beach merchants who had raised $7500 as pa.rt of their share of the proposed auto park- ing lot improvement until Al For- git and Herman Hansen, Newport merchants, appe·a.red before the city council Monday afternoon. Al Forgit stirred the council. men with his talk in defense of siders who drive down here to swim on weekends. He said the ·merchants had gone to great ex- pense to improve their business places. Henry Van Dyke Optimism In Detroit : What happens in Detroit is important· to California. Rea- son: California has more cars than any other state. (As if you didn't know). • But most ot the cars still on the hoof in this Golden State are getting pretty footsore from their long seIVice without being l)onorably retired to the junk pile. What they and their owners want ot know is, when are new cars-a lot of them -going to be available so that most of those still gasping along the highways (the cars, not the owners) can be re- leased from active duty. Well, the word coming from Detroit Is that auto manu- facturers are getting more optimistic about the prospects of catching up somewhat on the tremendous backlog of orders still clogging their books. The industrial front has been peaceful but active in the last two months and if no new la· bor wars develop Detroit should be bouncing new cars off the production line with real old fashioned speed before long. All of which means that the motor parade westward should increase substantially in the near future. Certainly there are enough persons in California who not only wish to buy cars but who are financially able to buy them to ac· count for no small part of the Detroit output. A great many lndividualS have saved enough to pay cash for their new cars, and there are plenty who will use low-cost bank credit to finance new ,·ito purchases. In fact, one of the big rea- sons why Califvmia has so many cars is that for years the banks in this state have I<ept the cost of automobile fmancing at a minimum. At any rate, the prospects of new machines to replace some of the traveling junk on the highwa y will be good news to owners of old cars-and to their cars-and to the other motorists who have to dodge those cars. S rts "Fixin " po g h lik bet " Th~ extent to which the boys w o e to on a sure thing'' have made inroads into the sports picture is something which is causing fans all over the country deep concern. The Graziano bribe story--Olle of the biggest bombshells In ring hlstori:;-together with the recent attempted brib- ing of two· professional football players and 'last year's,, brib- ery of several outstanding basketball players in New Ay ork show that something pretty drastic must be done to put a halt to this sort of thing. The American peopt, are great lovers of sports of all kinds. Sports events on the whole constitute a huge business. Thousands of persons eam their living directly and Indirectly from them. Right now we are in the midst of a second "golden age" of sports comparable to the one which followed World War I. • But our whole sports setup will face serious impairment if sports fans know that 99 per cent plus of the athletes in- lltllved in professional and amateur games are on the level. Unless. however. garmblers can be prevented from tempting the fraction of one per cent who can't resist bribes public con- fidence will be weakened.
