California Highway patrol of-
ficers repor ted that the accident
happened when a car driven by
Lee stopped suddenly at the Inter-
section or the two roads and a
car driven by H ei m crashed the
rear of the other vehicle.
They said a fire developed and
set both machines ablaze. Lee's
cremated body was found behind
the wheel of the machine.
Miss Thompson died of her in-
juries at the county hospital at
11 :15 o'clock Sund<)y morning.
Miss Hillhouse and Gould are
confined with major injuries in
the count y hospital and Archibald
and Heim are patients in St. Jos·
eph hospital·.

Murder Mile. Perhaps now that a city motor patrol officer
was the victim of Saturday's accident, the pompous state

our fine policemen was knocked senseless by a heavy blow in

Moscow -Its Meaning '
i The pattern of future world history for many decades to
come is being laid at Moscow. The great question is: Will
that pattern be one which will result in enduring peace or ine-
vitable war?
The main business at Moscow is to draw up a peace treaty
for Germany. Without such a treaty which will enable that
country to resume industrial activity and trade !:here will be
no economic stability in Europe. And as long as Europe re-
mains uncertain and upset the rest of the world can make but
small progress toward better conditions.
On leaving for the Russian capital Secretary of State
Marshall was pessimistic declaring that working out an agree-
ment acceptable to all members of the Big Four will be "ex-
tremely difficult".
The German peace treaty involves not just Germany alone ,
~ the whole matter of relations which have developed be-
tween the Soveit Union and the western powers during the
past two or three years.
The degree of progress on the treaty will be largely deter-
mined by the extent to which the Big Four are able to subdue
their fears and suspicions and work for the common good. If
the Russians, who are the chief obstructionists to greater in-
tl!mational ·harmony, decide to be more cooperative, then
real progress will be possible. On the other hand, if they con-
tinue to stall, to bicker and to accuse, the outlook will not be
bright.
As we await news of results from Moscow we can only
hope that the Soviets will realize that whatever temporary
advantage they may gain through obstinate and unreason-
able demands will more than be offset in the long nm by the
evils which will accrue to them as well as to the rest of the
world from continued unsettled conditions in Europe.
There are two roads leading from Moscow--Olle to war,
one to peace. For humilnity's sake Ute diplomats must
choose the right one.
