National, sl.<lte and local governments have all tried to solve it. Private industry has been pounding away at it. But \vith the end of the war 19 m onth s behind us we still have a severe housing shortage. What can be done ? Well, actually a great deal is being done. The trouble is that the demand for living space is so overwhelming that current ac- complishm ents don't seem like much. For instance, last year, according to the state chambe r of commerce, 115,000 new housing units were completed in California. That's a pretty size- able number no matter how you look at it. Based on population, if the same construction pace were carried on throughout the r est of the country we would have 9 ,000,000 new housing units in five ye~nough to solve the housing headache, and then some. Obviously then. contractors haven't been sitting on their hands. Nor has there been any !act. of finan- cial assistance to homebuilders from banks. The state's largest bank alone made over 60,000 loans in 1946 to veterans under the G .I. Bill, most of which were home loans. All told, many hundreds of mil- liollS of dollars were advanced for the construction of houses. _But coming right do'Y'l to it, the housing short.- age JS one of the toughest problems California or the . nation ever had. Even at best it will probably take several years to catch, up. · Meantime it should be recognezed that home build- ing is going forward with remarkab le speed, especial. 1y in view o f existing shortages of labor and vital JDatrials. so. :'\Ir. \Varren admitted he was a member of t h e Washlngton Bookshop. also kno"'Yt to everyone fr om Attorney-Ge neral Biddle up or dO\\TI, as th e headquarters of com munisn1 in \Vashington.
