Attended a flock of meetings t h e last week and was pleasantly IUrprised at the attendance; only thing that dismays all us old has-beens is the great number of new faces-people you never saw ~ore and you wonder where they all aime from. Got tooken to the Business and Profession- al Woman's c I u b shin<lig wblch taxed the capacity of the Yacht club ballroom to aeat 'em all. The old guard was there but most of the snappy program was handled by new comers, although pretty Dorothy Sutherland was made chief boss for the current year and Les Stef- fensen took his fourth an- nual bow as toastmaster. He was good, as usual, but he too was perplexed by the strangers, on whom he had no line to "kid." Nicest thing was making him an honor- ary member, the rite being performed by Agnes Blom- quist. The crowd thoug ht the gals were teasing Les. but they were in deadly earnest and really meant it as a token of appreciation. The quips handed out by that bunch of fems. were timely and clever, as were the booths erected at one end of the room and the lip.stick- ed faces of the gents led into the holy of holies gave them a sheepish look as t h e y emerged. which may sound like sour grease paint. 'I\vo fair Lido Islanders put on some of the best stunts. with Edythe Lippincott doing a ravishing Sophie Tucke r skit and Natalie Michaud giving an Indian dance that wowed them. Elaine Weiss of realty fame _m ade a honey of a "Gwendolyn" and Hilda Bris- coe as "Sylvia" proved "half revealing, half concealing." Fem Hobbs made a nifty 11Lucinda," while Irene Mor- ris as "Toots." Ruth Hershey and Joan Herrick, tap danc- ers, and the three Bettys Barstad, Noller and Handy and Marilyn Wheeler a nd Clarice Brown completed a dam good show. + + + Headed for Pe rdition. An- other· gathering that filled the Grammar school auditor- ium, under auspices of ·P .-T. A ., headlined Mason Rose of the L. A. National Founda - tion for Psychological Re- search. Rose is quite a speak- er and said the movies, radio. newspapers and brazen ad- vertisers were sending the youth of the nation to the nit-wits. He also blamed the parents but absolved the un- derpaid teachers, although handing the schools a wallop f o r t h e inane stuff they taught the kids. Informal Mr. Rose urged the P.-T . A. to go after the various agencies mentioned above in order to save the youth and wipe out the scourge th a t afflicts them. but any plan for going about the task was as vague as a· summer breeze. ·Much of biS stuff was to the point and my su~estion is to name a carefully selected committee to work out a program that will lead to better publicity and entertainment. yet re- tain liberty without license. + + • Bob Gvdner.
