such a person as Mrs. An-
drews, firebrand of the Save-
the-Beaches front, who suc-
cinctly presented the 'works' '
after being introduced by
sincere Chairman Braden
Finch. Tiie skeptics said
only · a handful would show
up from the notices of the mass meeting, and if any of
the doubters were there they
smartly kept their heads
shut.
·Mrs. Andrews pointedly
revealed who the "riff-raff'
were who swanned the
shores by declaring 'them

that the real sinners were
those attracted by the con-
cessions. But the main con-
tention to the California pul>-
lic is that our beaches are
more and more 1being gol>-
bled up by the 'fealthy, by
the sub-dividers and the val-
uable homes. made so by
their proximity to sand a nd
water. All these rightfully
at one time belonged to the
state. An early-day city
council, headed by Joe
Schnitker, voted to keep
miles of ocean beach invio-
late to the public. It's still
the property of the people.
It's like anything else, the
task of keeping our freedom
and our liberty and our re-

ha"·e to take my word for It. but Jwit. drive down to any of the Newport
Harbor 9P0rtfiahtnr boat landings and watch the fishermen .come
uhore with larce strings and tow sacks loaded with barracuda. You'll
probably see llOme nice ta.rce halibut. aho. I did just that Jut Tbunday
aft~rnoon and Friday mornlac found me and the MlNUA at Kimball'•
19th atreet landing telllnr Captain and Mn. Ray Kimball as how we
would ltke to l(O tlahlnr; but had no tackle. Could they fix us up with
both Ucketa and tackle!' They could and did ln a very pleuant maa-
ner.

he has constructed a smoke house

ern states. Like all fishermen, Mr.

in eastern Kentucky and as his family moved, so did he, coming to Glendale, Calif. when be
was only two. Here be thrived as a boy and went through high school. His father -practised
dentistry there and this family, we may note, bas more members in that profession than any
we know of. 'lbere are two uncles, two cousins, his grandfather, his father, and Dr. Obed
himself. • • • After graduating from high school be went back to Kentucky to the University
of Louisville-then from the blue grass back to sunshine and the U.S.C. dental college, gradu-
ating in 1937. 1ben he spent one yeer practising with his father, Dr. P. 0 . Lucas. In lQ,38
