per cent in many instances.

dience that if the gain in as-
sessed values was equal, it
would make no difference as
to the tax rate, but that the
state board bad claimed val-
. ues were too low in Orange
county. He stated that all
department budgets bad not
been received and it was im-
possible to fix the rate until
that was done; that in the ease of schools those taxes
voted by the people were out
ot the bands of the super-
visors; that there bad been a
great gain in. p<>Plllation

beat the officer.

cidedly facetious touch. Said he: .

Anybody seen a stray davenport,
a big eight-foot three-cushioned
one, blue-green in color? Mr. and
Mrs. H. G. Polley of Placentia
hope so. They lost one of that
description somewhere between
Newport Beach and Fullerton be-
tween 9 and 10 o'clock.
Here's what happened. The Pol-
leys had loaned their beach home,
at 39th St. and Coast Hwy., New-
port Beach. to the Eldon P eppers
of Fullerton. Last night they took
their half-ton pick-up down to
help move the davenport back to
Fullerton.
The davenport must have fallen
off the truck (all except one cush-
ion) somewher e enroute, the Pol-
leys believe, because it wasn't
there when they got to Fullerton.
The Polleys are offering a re-
ward tor the return or finding of
the davenport. Their Newport-
F:ullerton route was Coast Hwy_.
to the Arches. Newport Blvd to
Costa Mesa and Harbo r Blvd, and
then str aight up H arbor Blvd. to
Anaheim and Fullerton. The Pep..
ers reside at 117 Ash St., Fuller-
ton.
