As it must wtth an ot us, Death over<- took James Irvine, largest propa ty owner in 'the har- bor district and of Orange county, at his vaSt •cattle ranch near Jlo7snan, Mon- tana. He was nearly 80 years old ~ !\is high blood pres-sure anli the mountain alti- tude, broqght the end sud- denly, just as be always wished to gO, UBradfr Hellis, ·~d. manager and wise counselor, was with him. In- terwoven with harbor and blly . dtM!lopment the Irvine Ranch Co. has always taken an utive interest in this area. Careful, conscientious I I and bJunt spoken, Jim Irvine bad no time for wasters or hastily· conceived projects. For years his company made exhaustive studies of practl- caJJ,y every enterprise of county or Irvine importance and never spent money or entered any endeavor with- out such an intensified re- port. . Over a quarter of a cen- tury aoquain~J:s one learns many of-the and ideas ot such a man as Jim Irvine. In his old offices on the ' ranch out of Tustin he had a 'tYPewrltten list on the wall coiititining the d i f f e r e n t taxes his firm had to pay and at that time there were more than 125. In those days you coula always walk In and greet him or Bellis or · Cogin, etc., wl thou t the formality of a card. He loved his old ranch house, a stone's throw from his office, and said he got more real enjoy- ment there than in his man- sion in Sail Franciso. Simi- larly his attendance at Coast association ·and other meet- ings, generally accompanied by Mrs. Irvine, was alWlf)ls unobtrusively done with no attempt to dictate or 'influ- ence any of the deliberations. + + + SaDliago Dun. In the '20's when Orange county voters were trying to make up their minds whether to build Prado dam, Mr. Irvine re- fused to wait and pennit .the thousands or acre feet of water to escape to the ocean, so organized a little group of land owners in his area and built the Santiago dam and reservoir. It backed µp a vast amount of water into' what Is now known as Irvine lake and irrigated thousands of acres of arid land now pro- ducing citrus wealth. In like manner his company placed salt beds in the upper bay, salvaging many tons for live- ~ and other purposes. His holdings in this district are tremendous, but he al- ways refused to throw them onto the market until growth . abd development justified. + + ·+ Helped Harbor. During the many campaigns for har- bor work Mr. Irvine contri- buted funds while his coun- sel was sought as to preced- ure, etc. Spending public monies needlessly ever irked him, and ~wing the war when some pompous army men iJ)slsted on taking some of his best orchards for army Camps, iJl$ead of vacant ID'QllDd, bis Indignation was 6oundless. Estimates of his wealth ~ve been made by " mang, tiut few really ever kneW whether his company was worth fifty million or four hupdred million. His greatest loss and grief was when. his son and daughter died durin& the nu epidemic In the early 20's. Young Jim, U be WU affeetionateey "'!led• had charge of the Oranll'e . county operations, while bis brother, Mytord. . bad olflcs In San Frandsro. + + + -, .. ,.
