the American Defense Medal and
the World War II Victory Medal
to eligible veterans in the Sixth
Army area will start immediately.
Former Army personnel who
ser ved between September 8, 1939,
and December 7, 1941, under
ord€'rs to active duty for a period
of 12 mon lhs or longer are en.-
titled to the American Defense
Service Medal.
A foreign service clasp and
bronze service star are furnished
if the person entitled to the rnt>dal
was serving outside the continent-
al limits of the Un ited States, in-
cluding Alaska. The World War
11 Victory MC'dal is awarded for
service between December 7, 1941
and Decem ber 31 .. 1946 a nd no
clasp or star is authorized.
Those eligible for award oi these
medals may apply in person at
any Army r ecruiting sta,tion, mili-
ta ry post or Or ganized Reserve
Corps es tablishment. Medals are
also being made available to au-
thorized \·eterans organizations
a nd to the Nationa1 Guard for
issue to eligible persons who ai;r
ply in person at posts of the vet-
er a ns organizations and at Na·
tiona l Guard armor ies.

Hot summer days have caused
some decrease in the number of
women actively saving used cook-
ing fat, according to the latest
continuing survey made every 60
days by the American Fat Salvage
committee.
Forty-two percent of the women
interviewed had containers of used
cooking fat on hand. while 54 per-
cent were actively salvaging in
May, 1947. the .time of last check-
up.
"Primarily," says a srx>kesman
for the commi ttee, "the findings
r eflect a normal seasonal decline
which hes occurred each year dur-
ing the hot summer months when
meat consumption is ;:iwer. How-
ever. in part, it is also due to
the erroneous feeling that salvag-
·ing of used cooking fat may not
be as importa nt as it formerly
was, and to lack of iaterest, now
that the prices paid for used. cook-
ing fat are leveling off.
.. Recent statements from gov-
ernment officials show that the
need for conscie ntious fat salvage
is still great, es world supplies of
industrial fats and oils are de-
pleted. Every woman is urged to
conserve all fats and oils, reuse
what she can in cooking, and sell
the remainder to her meat dealer."
