Local elementary schools in Corona del Mar and
Newport Beach are to be commendeµ for being the
first educational institutions iri . Orange county to
launch, the state-approved junior fireman · program.
The project 'has the endorsement of its sponsors,
the Nt!WlJOrt Harbor Kiwanis club, which in turn is
cooperating with the Newport Beach Fire depart-
ment in the program which is designated to teach
children the importance of fire control and preven·
ti on. ·
The program will be introduced in the form of a
one-year-course" in/{he fifth and sixth grades and
children . of those classes will have an opportunity to
express their aptitudes toward the control ana pre-
vention of fires in the harbor communities.
Merits will be given on the basis of the number
of inspection catds turned in by each pupil participat-
ing. Each pupil will begin as an inspector and will
have the opportunity of obtaining sufficient Cfl!dits
which will entitle him to the po st of captain or !Yatal-
ion chief.
Home-owners can be assured that the junior fire
inspector who raps on the door and presents his ere~
dentials rs bne to be trusted to ·inspect the surround-
ings and make reports back to his class on the status
of the home from the fire-prevention standpoint.
Korea: The Breaking Point
American officials who have been trying for
months to work out an a g r e e m e n t with t h e
Russians for the ,unification of Korea have given up
hope of getting re sults. Not only that, but they have
given the Soviet negotiators a sharp verbal lashing
for the tactics they are using in Korea.
The C6mmunists are running true to form. Their
party has exclusive control in the Russian-occupied
area. In the United States zone the Soviets seek to
undermine th e American-sponsored government.
When our officials cracked down with an:ests of the
trouble makers the Communists quickly charged us
with suppressing "free, democratic" government. ·
It's interesting how the Communists always talk
ab9ut "free, democratic" government until they get
cofftrol -and can then put an end to lioth freedom
and democracy.
