THE SAND CRAB By S A M (Braden F1nch, Corona del Mar pottery manufacturer, is pinch.bitting for Sam Meyer, who is on vacation.-Ed.) AT THE DOG SHOWS late- ly, I have been bombard- ed by propaganda of the Anti-vivisection Society. This group is trying to pass laws against the use of live dogs In medical experimentation. Such a step would set back progress in conquering can- cer and other diseases for a thousand years. Seems like these people should first clean up their own premises and put an end to the cruel and barbarous cus~m of cut- ting off the ears of cert.ail! fine breeds such as the Dol>- ennann and the Great Dane. Ear cropping is a wicked. practice to say the very least. It is torture to the dog as the wotinds are broken open afresh frequently during the healing to get the right "dec- orative" effect. Funny what some people will do for pure vanity while a t the same time they object to a matter tbat saves many human lives. + + + It was the old Greek slave Aesop who first told the one about the ant and the grass- hopper. Sometimes I wonder if Newport He-rbor was built on the "grasshopper" plan. That is, everything for the sununer season and we hope we will get by somehow. wheh winter comes. Trouble is that everybody in business here is not going to get by this winter. If the local re-, cession keeps up a lot of red ink is going to be needed to· balance the books of many home-town institutions, and a lot of people may have to move elsewhere to find jobs. This won't happen in Phoe- nix, Ariz .. in Sarasota, Fla .• or even in Pasadena, Calif., Why not? Simply because those towns cater to the WINTER visitor. It could be done here, too. Most people are lazy, just like the writer of this substi- ·tute column today. A sure sigh of laziness is being late to meetings and appoint- ments. I have seldom been to a meeting in Newport Beach where at least half the people were not la te-Rotary dlab excepted. About the only treatment for being lazy and putting things off that I know of is to keep reminding yourself to be p r o m p t through the use of quota- tions, such as, "Procrastina- ti on is the thief of time." Tha t particular quotation is rather weak, in my opinion, however. I prefer the one "Do not put off until this afternoon that which you can do this morning." + + • Am advised by penny post- card that there is going to be a meeting of the folks who are against making China Cove into a public beach. They object on the grounds- that it is an "unfa ir assess- ment and tax." A pal of mine. the Hermit of Buck Gully who is reported to live in a cave in the hills back of Corona del Mar. has this to say on the subject: "These I guys are willing to let the beaches be destroyed if it will save them some tax money. Now the beaches add to the charm and character of our community. The charm and character are what create high real estate values. High real estate val- ues bring high assessed val- uations. 'The higher the val- uation the higher the tax. Therefore, if the charm and character of the community can be destroyed, valuations w;lll IP l>rought down, and taxes deCreased as a result" SimP!e, isn't It!
