all that effort of the de-
corator's art is lost on the
urge and siirge for whatinel
shall I get Atmt Mamie or
Sister Sue or Friend Podutik.
It's a crool, crool world in a
bewilderment of offerings
that slap you in the kisser
from evecy counter and aisle.
And if yoU. don't watch your
p's and x's some bustling
dame will jolt you in the ribs
and elbow you here and
there until you'll find your-
self on the outside of every-
thing. Why do people get
that way? Did you ever put
off doing a difficult task until
the 'last minute? Did you
ever plow the mdse. byways
trying to concentrate while
Mama's litlll yelper alongside
is kicking the daylights out
ot your~?
Well, that's what happens
to . this final shopping spree
that ends up in grabbing the
first senseless thing that
looks like fi ve bucks and
costs two. I sometimes
wonder if this gift trading
hasn't been greatly enhanced
by the stores pushing the
Idea for all its worth in page
after page of ads, offering
this 'n that to the unwary.
If this gets by the News-
'l'imes-gimlet-.,yed advertis-
ing manager. expect to catch
a. lotta you-know on how I
get that way, 'cause I'm out
of 'the game and does it give
me any license to holler?
Maybe not, but it's nice to sit
on the sidelines and tell 'em.
While after all I love to shop
and am just as big a nut in
delving for presents as in the
days when it was hard sled-

Doc. Grundy. Those of his
many friends who have fol-
lowed the work of Dr. Gor-
don Grundy, will be grieved
to learn of his passing. Al-
ways deeply interested in
civic work. he had been on
the Chamber of Commerce
directorate for years, on al-
most every important com-
mittee in the community and
a tireless worker for the
Scouts. He came here in the
early 20's and with Dr. Con-
rad Richter, bqjlt the hospi-
tal on Central avenue. a
sorely-needed Institution. 1be
two were in practice for
yean and were old-fashioned
enough to answer patients'
calls at all hours of the night.
A fine physician and gentle-
man has gone to his Maker.

Subpenas for Mrs. Lou Dell
Spreckels' six ex-husbands were
obtained yesterday by the attor-
ney representing Husband No. 7,
John D. Spreckels II. 37-year-old
sugar for tune heir, at his trial on
a felony assault charge.
The action was taken by Atty.
Royal M. Galvin.
Of the subpenaed former hus-
bands, Hal H erman of Hollywood.
Mrs. Spreft:els' mate immediately
prior to her marrying the sugar,
wu the only one served. He is ex-
pected to testily ~in Spreckell' be--
hall today.
The others in order of their mar-
riage to Mn. Spreckell are Walter
Conner, believed to be in Hawaii;
Henry Caney of Newport Beach,
Fred Beardon, believed to be In
Alaska; Herbert Hawkinson and
Vance" Breese, whereaboutli un-

through the film showing.

employment level was the highest
on record for November.
Scharrenberg said the principle
decline in manufacturing employ-
ment during the month was in can-

bureaus and individuals above
named.
The board of trustees of the
school voted Dec. 4 to send Dr.
Peterson to Washington to person-
ally explain the needs of Orange
Coast Junior college.
A formal request by Dr. Peter-
son . president of Orange Coast
Junior college. had been made to
the War Assets administration to
delay transfer of title to a recent-
ly-bid-for portion of buiJdings and
land at the air base.
Delay of the transfer had been
asked until J an. 1. 1950. with an
interim lease for the same sJte at
the rate of $1 per year.

Newport Beach. had waged a Jong

influenza epidemic of 1919, decided
he needed help and sought the ser-
vices of Dr. Grundy, "'"ho had come
back to Long Beach to live. The
two had offices in Balboa and
later Newport, and a ft'.'w years
later built the Newport Beach hos-
pital at Ninth a nd Central. Later
still the:> partnership was dissolved,
Dr. Grur.dy opening offices in the
Balboa I nn after disposing or the
hospital. \vhilt'.' Dr. Rich ter recently
opened offices a t 2903-C W. Cen-trB..i avenue, Newport.
As a member of the Newport
Har bor Yacht club, Dr. Grundy
hart been its fleet surgeon for 'Z1
years. In 1944-45 he was vice-pres-
ident of the chamber of commerce
and had been on its board of direc-
tors for many years. He also serv ..
ed as .lieut. commander in the U.
S. Naval Reserve for tt'.'n years. He
aided in organizing the local
Legion and was vice commander.
