blow, balloons will pop,
liquor will flow and a gener-
ally hectic time will be had
by all New Year's Eve. As
one caustic Newporter re-
marked in wishing me the
season's greetings: "Merry
Christmas and a Happy
Hangover," guess he knew
whereof he speaks. As 1947
closes most everybody had a
prosperous 365 days. At least
industry made gobs of dough
as reflected in their dividend
statements and all reports in-
dicate a carry-ove r into 1948.
Chas. E. Wilson, head of
General Electric says indica-
tions point to a high level of
bus! n ess in the coming
months, although some de-
partments of government
dispute his claim, with the
difference that Mr. Wilson
gives flocks of sound rea-
sons. the main one being that
supply does not yet equal
demand
BUt in all our prosperity
the one disturbing note is

beginning with those dated January I, 1948. Increased costs reduced the
earnings of this business in California to a point far below even the mini-
mwn generally conceded as necessary. These rates were approved by the
Public Utilities Commission of the State of California on an interim basis
after e:ztmsive bearings in the eleven-month period which bas elapsed
since the filing of.our application in February, 1947. The rates, to be in

lion two perpetual trophies for this
race and the Newport Harbor
Yacht club will provide trophies
for all divisions. Aiomento plaques
have been promised for all par-
ticipants by the Newport Ocean
~ailing association. Full co-opera-
tion by both the United States and
f\llex.ican officials will be had.
Thomas C. Webster, race com~
mittee chairman of the Newport
Harbor Yacht dub is handling the
race for the club and ~ill an-
nounce, within a very few days,
the starting day, sometime in the
latter part of April, 1948.
The Newport Ocean Sailing u-
socia ti on has grown from nine
charter memben on Auiust 15,
1947 to its present membenblp of
over 75. All of these members are
actively supparting the auoclation
in tu endeavour to bring more
cruising and racing to the New-
port Harbor area and have wor}J.ed
hard to bring the Ensenada race to
an actuality.
