The story involves the rise and fall of the Ripley Hotel, cmce the pride of the town of Ripley, and at one time one of the finest hostelries in the deeert southwest. The hotel was completed in 1922 at the new rromotion town (named for • former Santa Fe railroad pre>ident) of Ripley, in the center o Palo Verde valley, nine miles south of Blythe. The valley, an alluvial shell on the CalUomla aide of the Colorado river, had no Hoov- er and no Parker dams in those days for fiood protection. Ordinary earth levees usually kept the chocolate colored waters in the silt laden river out. during the IJ)ring runoff. However, the flood of 1922 was no ordinary one. Nearly 200,000 cubic feet per second of water ru5hed down the river from the melting anowa of the Rockies that summer, and Ripley was in the path of the levee break at Raab Bend. , ~----1 Cel nll : 1l'fltMlftldlVI llWI • • I ..... _ ...... -. ........... _ .......
