TRUE CONFESSIONS The East generally -l'a pretty slow in admitting that anything out this way can be better than what they have back there, But every now and then somebody breaks down and says it's really so. Recently in Washington such an admission came from none other than New Hampshire's Senator Tobey who hasn't b«n 'exactly cordial toward some of our West- ern businessmen. In fact, the 'llenator has been so rabid in his support of the btnk holding biD aimed at Tr&JUt- america and Bank of America, that the New Hampshire • Morning Union of Manchester editorially apologized to California for his conduct. But Senator Tobey has made a "confession." He said that in 1946 when visiting his daughter in California he ran short of funds-:> not unusual occuJTence tor most Americans. So he 'went into a bra.nch of the Bank of America in San Bernardino to cash his check drawn on a New liampshire bank. He was given the cash without delay, even though be didn't identify hlmselt as a senator. Tobey adatitted Uiat he was BO impressed with the speed arid simplicity of it all, especially as compared to Ea.stern banking methods that he otood around and watch- ed the way business was transacted. It had, he said, the ease and casualness of a. country store. And he went on 1 · to say that if that kind of banking were introduced in his home state it would drive the present bankers out I of business. I Well, it was nice of the senator to 'fess up, but why I praise Western banking on the one hand and then work against it on the other? ----•---- Ml~URI MUD For a long time the feeling bu been held generally that Prealdent Truman, altho'!I!> ~ ~~ of the notor-io~ Pendergot i;iaS"Jil!a Jn Kanu• at;y,,~bgw~ - ed untouched and untainted by the corruption of this group that boosted him up the political ladder. Thia probably is true-as far as it goes. But Mr. Truman, while not taking part in the devious doings of the Kansas City crowd. I has nevertheless been one of them in spirit and has served ~em well. He was always quick to proclaim his loyalty liid 'friendship for old Tom Pendergast and has kept in close touch with young Tom who now runs the gang. Mem- bers of the gang who were sent to prison for election frauds and other offenses somehow never had to stay in very long. And Harry Truman, AA senator, did all he could to h,!lve the U. S. DUrtrict Attorney removed who sent Tom Pendergast to the pen for inc6mt tax evasion. I\. also seems more than mere coincidence that the U. S. Department of Justice has been only lukewarm in its attempts to solve the theft of the fraudulent ballot,, records -theft which saved many of the Pendergast puppets from going to j~. And there is little reason to believe that the recent murder involving the gang will result in • any &ITeSts or convictions. It is both disgusting and dis- . gaceful that the President continues to maintain his cozy cpnnections with the Kansas City mob. . •~---•I LOCAL GOVERNMENT "An awakening to the importance of local government ~ result in more busy citizens rendering service as mem· ~ of city, county and local school government bodl- jut for the sake of doing their part toward bulwarking &mocracy at its foundation."-De Leon, Texas, Free Press. of eawduat llOalred In on b\d been di8tributed over th• lovely In -clotha and -daJ) at u:u p.m. In Roolmol'< eervtce.
