' A party in a 1950 Ford convertible Visited all these beaches on a one-d~ trip. We didn't actually count thl!' crowds, but we will accept that "more than · 1,000,000" as alU.hentlc. ' The car wu furnished by the AMociated Ford De&lero of Southern California. It performe,d beautifully and com- bined riding comfort with power-16 operation. We simply skimmed along the highways and it was a far cry from the old Model T. ' At Newport-right alongside Newport Pie1-there is a stretch of beach whc:re-fishermen sell their morning's catch. The boats are pulled right up on the sand and their owners offer all kinds of fish for sale. Go Out at 4:00 a. m. The men go out about 4 o'clock in the morning, put out set lines and pick them up about 6 a. m. Hundreds of people buy their fish daily from these open-air markets. We talked for a few moments with some of the fish- ermen and aaw a group of boys, 9 to 12 years old, baiting , hooks for the next day. We learned they get 25 cents for 100 hooks, baii.Cd on set lines, each of which bolds about 500 books. The youngsters put salted anchovy on each book and bait a complete line in about 1 10 hours. Jerry Fitzgerald, 8, told us he buys all 'his own cloth- ing with the money be makes from baiting hooks. He proudly pointed to a pal, Richard Talstra, and said: "He's really .fast, he can bait 600 hooks an hour.'' Jus t before ltaving Newport, we stopped at the new beach hotel there, Villa Marina. and who should we Gce • but Phil Johnston of Huntington Park. Phil recently bought a new Chris-Craft and has been putting in a lot of time albacore fishing. He told us that in seven trip.•, this was the firs t day he had been skunked. Best Albacore Year .. Phil s aid this is probably the best albacore fishing year ever enjoyed in Southern California. He told us they have been plentiful and have been biting like nobody's business.
